I always used to watch cartoons (actual cartoons, like scooby doo, ed, edd, and eddy, cow and chicken, dexter's lab, etc.) and computer animated movies, so it's not much different. 3d was a phase for me :P

My parents think that animé is only for little kids and my mum in particular asks us when we would finally outgrow them. Of course, as animé has different genres and target audiences, she'd not be getting any answers any time soon.
What anime needs is more abs.

I'm not talking about Goku-sized ones.
I'm not talking about barely-there ones from bishounen/Yaoi Guys either.
What I'm talking about is GAR Archer pan de sals.

Now that's what I call ecchi! Yeah!

well i am somewhat lucky . since i have my own room, and my father rarely enters it ( he enters when he needs smth ) , so its kinda cool but..... my father saw me numerous times watching and said smth like : " U r 20 years old and u still watch cartoons . " ... then i give him my reply ...i simply say that i'm tired of watching TV and its god damn boring soaps and TV shows which r boring as hell or i watched them already ... and personally i avoid TV ... also i believe that my father doesn't recognize the difference u know ? for him its all cartoons , ofc i explained to him some things or even on some occasions i explained the synopsis of some anime which i found quite interesting in past few days/weeks ... as i stated be4 i avoid TV , for me its only about going out with my m8's , anime ( as my interest and hobby ) and etc. ( sport , obligations , responsibilities ) :D

well sometimes.. anime in the other hands is really different from cartoons.. young adults shouldn't be ridiculed from watching anime.. its just like those drama soap opera shows or drama/comedy series on tv.. anime is not just for kids

Sometimes my parents talk with me about anime and manga but they always confuse anime with manga and my father sometimes says that he also read anime in his youth (he means comics)... but I find it rather funny ^^
They don't make fun of anime or manga though.

My dad was the one that got me into anime in the first place, he's more of an old school anime lover (specifically 70's-90's anime's), so I was exposed to the more adult and gritty animes at a young age (like 9 or 10).

Sometimes he likes to make fun of the animes I watch nowadays (like the romance ones), but he knows that without him, I wouldn't even be watching anime as obsessively as I do.

My mom doesn't really have an interest in it, but she respects it for what it is. Even bought me manga for Christmas on numerous occasions.

My parents never cared if I watched anime. As long as I have good grades they let me do anything in my free time. My sister is the only one who shows some interest from time to time but only for the fun parts. I remember when I was little they sometimes watched Inuyasha with me but only for about 10 minutes before they switched the channel. They thought that anime were cartoons. Only when I explained it to them they understood that it was anime not cartoons. They don't really care for it, through.

However it's pretty funny to hear my little sister tries to immitate anime conversations. Even if my parents would make fun it wouldn't bother me but since I keep my anime-love for myself and don't start talking about it to them (they don't know a thing and it bores them) they are fine with it.

Hmm...for me my family is completely aware of my hobbies but don't actually understand it. I still get questionable comments from my dad every now and then but it's becoming less frequent.

At least they let me go to conventions with my friends and bring back all sorts of weird things lol.

Well, my mum doesn't really probe about my anime, but she did claimed anime itself to be 'cartoons'. But you can't really blame her - she's one of those old-school Asian parents who's not even educated in the English language.

My parents are pretty much like that, except every now and then they'll come a rage at me because I'm wasting my time because anime (or video games) doesn't help me at school.

Each to his own subjective opinion. Like I said, X-Men isn't cartoon. Batman isn't cartoon. Transformers G1 isn't cartoon. And anime is definitely not cartoon, unless it's of the same cheesiness of Looney Tunes. Or South Park.

This is the only similarity ,Animation = Animation. that all.

Just because that Coke are invented first that doesn't mean that both are equivalent.Same goes to Anime...Well,i am just try to differentiate between both in term of Name, but it seems like the other forum thread has gone into even more deeper(the content inside) than just names -_-" ...good luck on that argument, its gonna be a long and frustrating one ...< I am done with this argument>

The term anime does not encompass all cartoons (except in Japan, where it does).

Coke and pepsi are structured differently. They have common elements, but pepsi is not a sub-genre of coca-cola or the other way around.

This.
Anime's are cartoons, face facts, why is there any argument here? Are you against it because you have the feeling that calling them 'cartoons' somehow lessens them or makes them seem more childish?
Pffffft. Who cares.

Errr, nah.
The only DIFFERENCES between Anime and Cartoons are, in fact, that Anime is a form of animated cartoon that originated from Japan, and generally have a recognisable style (most of the time).

Also on topic, no. The closest to my parents asking or making fun of anime/manga was when my mother picked up volume 1 of Yotsuba that was sitting on my desk, looked at the front and back cover, gave an odd look, and put it down, never asking or mentioning it again.

As with the feeling of having your manhood questioned when someone calls you 'gay'. However, whereas the definition of homosexuality is pretty much straight to the point, the definition of 'cartoons', as I've stated, is more controversial, so it's more difficult to ignore whether anime is properly labeled when referred to as 'cartoons'.

Just because you're able to find many Canadians in America doesn't mean they originated from America, now does it?

Well here's the thing.

The term cartoon is the fundamental classification, no going around that. Everything hand drawn, and or not animated, is a cartoon. You may not know, but a cartoon was once classified as a fine art, yes, such as paintings.

Source:
http://xroads.virginia.edu/~MA96/PUCK/intro.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cartoon

So why do we refer to cartoons strictly in a animated motion form, now a days?

Because, as we all know, the genre has become incomprehensibly diverse, and has evolved. There's not only two genres(jap. and american), but countless types of cartoons as ITS OWN definition of what a cartoon is tells us.

Just like cars. We all know what a Dacia 1310 is, or what a Golf3 is, their cars. But are they the same exact thing? No, they are not.

Its very confusing at first.

For the tl;dr guys, the fundamental definition of a cartoon is -> everything hand drawn, or painted, be it in motion, or not. Ignoring this, you ignore facts, and your opinion has no base.

Yeah. To be accurate, it was applied as a term for a model for a painting. Like a blueprint for a sketch/drawing, if you will. You could say it's still technically a drawing, but there you go, the purpose of 'cartoons' were to serve as preparations for real drawings rather than being drawings themselves. That was the reason why I chose to refer to the first definition the word evolved into - drawings meant for humor or satirical purposes.

Yes, but that's the thing. The term itself has evolved beyond that, in countless sub-genres that are, in some way different then other sub-genres.

Afterall, i wouldn't call a painting by Leonardo,to be similar as a show called Ben Ten, or Superman.

I live in a hostel... but, when I do go home, my mum doesn't really say anything about my watching anime...
I'm sort of famous in my family for watching 'cartoons' 24/7, and it's been like that since I was little, so, to them, the anime I watch now is no different from what I watched back then (everything, ranging from Tom & Jerry to Transformers: Beast Wars)...

The definition of Cartoons is not controversial at all, actually. as a post a few up from mine has explained in greater detail.
And what kind of analogy is the homosexual reference? Seriously?

tl;dr - you're getting butthurt because you are, indeed, wrong.
Sorry to sound like an ass, but you're fighting a losing battle
