An excellent book, I can't wait for some of Tatsumi's earlier Gekiga stuff to come out. This really filled the gaps that Frederick Schodt's books had on the history of Gekiga.

very enlightening manga indeed.... pity it is like impossible to find online.
Fortunately I managed to find a copy to read. I am quite impressed with the way it shows the evolution of manga, and Japanese culture as a whole. Also the ways in which foreign media and culture (such as French and American cinema) impacted the direction which Japan culturally evolved.

genius! really whets yr. appetite to read some of the works (including his own) written about in the manga....it's a real pity that pre-1960's manga are so very difficult to get your hands on here in the u.s.a. - pretty much the only ones i've been able to read are a very small portion of tezuka's works plus a few of shigeru mizuki's gegege no kitaro stories.......maybe someday?

Why isn't the film adaptation on MAL? Because it's a Singaporean rather than a Chinese or Korean production? They're East Asia any way...
