This episode is so emotional. When I watched this episode, I learned that we should love our loved ones when they are with us or it will be late.

I thought I'd never cry so hard watching something after Clannad After Story until this episode of Violet Evergarden. Definitely the hardest I've ever cried from watching something, and I'm not exaggerating. Kyoto Animation has always been my most favorite studio for all the magic they've created.

There's only one other anime episode that made me cry this much and that's clannad after story episode 18. On second viewing, it's not even one singular moment that makes you cry; it starts from the very beginning when the mom tells her daughter that she's writing to "someone far away", all the way to the end. And speaking of the end, as it cuts back to the postal office, you think it's over, but then we see Violet release all the tears she's been holding in all that time during those 7 days. Yeah, we've been punching you in the gut all episode long, but here's one last one to really send it home.

An emotions rollercoaster, which at the end made you realize, you've been like Violet, discovering emotion you thought you had, and you did, but you never really understood them.

11/10 episode, I've never cried so much watching this anime, I've always only shed a tear until this episode, the thought of losing your loved ones at young age kinda broke me down, actually might be the best anime episode I've seen so far

I rewatched this episode right after watching it for the first time

"I'm Not Okay, I Need A Hug! And So Does She!!"

Still one of the most devastating ballads in Eastern Animation outside of Ghibli. Man this one's a doozy.

Good ep to be honest, animation is still very good also the letter concept as the mother remains is quite clean I must say, but also it feels weird since we had a glimpse in the future without violet aging 10 years which fine, so many letters also for 50 years that is quite good I must say, Violet finally having sentiments quite a bit more is a good point, I'll continue watching.

This is the best episode of the series, and it even managed to get tears from me.

I felt so sorry for that little girl. She knew that her mom was sick and wasn't getting any better. She knew that her mom would eventually pass. That's why she was annoyed at the guests, because they just took, what little time she had left with her mom, away from her. The selfishness of wanting time with your mom and to play with her, even when you know she has important things to do. Losing her father and being even sadder at knowing that she'll lose her father.

I think the letters were a sweet touch. I don't know about having them until 50 years, but I do like the thought of the letters. As a way to comfort her before she eventually moves on and has a life of her own.

With that sad, this episode is also the one that exposes how bad the rest of the anime is. Okay, that isn't completely fair. Some episodes show potential. Episode 5 would've been good, if it weren't for the uncomfortable age gap. The personalities were there and it would've been an enjoyable back and forth. Except, once again... An age gap with an underaged person...

Episode 6 also showed some potential as well. Leon was an intriguing character, but Violet and everyone else is so bland. Like... That episode was one of the ultra rare times that I would rather have a male protagonist, and I don't care about men at all (still salty at men ruining Oniisama E).

I think that the show would've been much better if Leon or Anne were the main characters. Violet in theory has a better story because she was a child soldier, and grew up being seen as a tool. Though she's a bland character overall. She's so boring, and the characters around her don't bring it up. Basically, they're boring as well. Meanwhile, Anne and Leon actually had personality. They had intriguing stories that I would have liked to see. Their episodes were the best in the series, but their episodes also show the flaws of the series. It shows the lack of personality that the show has. They expose the lack of soul that this show has. In that respect, Violet is human manifestation of this show. Both are beautiful to look at, but they're ultimately boring and lack soul.

@LuxuriousHeart You know what, I just realized something. The princess in episode 5 was named Charlotte. She was 10 years old when men lined up to date her, because her mother wanted to secure a married for her. This is very similar to Charlotte from Rose of Versailles, only Charlotte was 11.

The difference being, that in Rose of Versailles, Charlotte liked the attention of being the best dressed at the ball, but she hated the creepy man that her mother tried to pair her with. Her situation in Rose of Versailles was seen as tragic. Yet in this anime, they make light of her mother trying to pair her with a creepy man...

The main character, Violet, is a teenager and used to be a soldier. This is very similar to Lady Oscar, from Rose of Versailles, who was Marie Antoinette's bodyguard at 14:

Once again, Lady Oscar is superior to Violet because while she isn't the most expressive, her character arc is still vastly superior with the internal struggle of her feeling bad for the people, while also respecting Marie Antoinette and being her bodyguard.

Plus, the characters in Rose of Versailles were vastly superior... Once again, KyoAni wasted resources on this BS anime...

You know how every single episode I've watched from this show so far was decent to mid in my opinion? PLEASE FORGIVE ME. I AM SO SORRY TO HAVE SAID THAT. Because this one freaking episode. This one. episode. Absolutely shattered me. I don't care how mid the last episodes were, cuz this was absolutely perfect. When I saw the mother writing letters to some anonymous person, I thought it would be another one of those sad episodes where the mother dies and there's great voice acting, leading it to be a high rated episode. But the moment when I realized that ALL of those letters were birthday letters for her kid. Every single year till she died? I broke apart. It was not sad or melancholy in anyway at all. It was so wholesome that I cried. Then the ending frame? Loved Ones Always Watch Over You? THE TEARS COULDN'T STOP GUSHING OUT OF ME. If you watched this episode just now, go hug your mom. Call her. Do whatever. Because they deserve all of the credit. This is the greatest mother episode ever and one of my top 5 episodes of all time.

Absolute cinema. The storyline of this episode is so simple, yet its execution is flawless. Classic about a mother's undying love for her child. The part where it shows the various phases of Ann's growing years, finishing with her having her own child, was such a good cherry on the cake. Really emotional episode, almost started tearing up with Violet at the end there.
