The War In 2020 by Ralph Peters
Pretty much the whole world is at war, primarily USA & USSR vs Japan & Islamic Republic (from what I can gather?), plus there's a pandemic also wiping everyone out (a time traveller clearly wrote this).
I'm maybe about halfway through the book, but It's still not clear why any of this happened, feels like a sequel book or something? but it's not. A few too many characters and pointless side-stories also.

I started reading "Sabbia Nera" by Cristina Cassar Scalia. Police thriller in Palermo, Italy.
I like this style of books, we'll see how it goes.

@Ylajalii I am not the individual you are asking, but having read the story myself twice it is a work of science fiction that touches on several themes, alienation, sentimentality, and understanding the most memorable of these. It is a pretty work - the original version was a short story. It aligns much with other bittersweets such as Anthem or The Giver.

@Moogal12 That is a fun fantasy series. I enjoy Mr. Sapkowski's grounded style of writing. I am picky about magic as a literary element in any work of fiction, but his depictions were fine. I found his presentation of monsters and mythological creatures enchanting, ideal for the contexts he would write for them, giving Geralt something interesting to do. He had penned some compelling antagonists too. Much of the dialogue was clear, dry, but purposeful and intentioned to move events forward. It is a good series. I would recommend it.

I've been reading Sir Walter Scott's The Talisman most recently. Romantic prose, elegantly composed scenes, fine and sparse dialogue. It is an enjoyable book thus far.

@Ylajalii Anthem is authored by Ayn Rand, who is most usually known for her authorship of Atlas Shrugged and/or The Fountainhead, but sometimes her philosophical works too, which I confess to never having a remote inclination towards reading. The Giver was a more recent (or past 30 years, anyway) novel written by Lois Lowry. As I understand it, The Giver became something of a series after the first novel's celebrated reception, but I never continued beyond book 1 as it seemed a complete work to me.

@Ylajalii I do not know what you like, dislike, or are otherwise bored by. I doubt all of what interests me would readily captivate another either, as I balance fiction reading out with biographical works, commentaries, historical and scholarly works, and so on and so forth, and some of that is admittedly very dry - informative, but dry.

What kind of books do you enjoy reading? Any particular genres strike your fancy? Are you in search of something with a particular style? What have you been reading that you have grown tired of reading?

My favourite type of works are mostly about lonely idealistic/altruistic outsiders whose ideals or values turn them into madness. Some examples are Notes from the Underground, The sorrows of young Werther, or Frankenstein. I'm getting bored of these type of novels, since the ones that I am reading don't have the quality or the great execution the first ones I read had.

I also like revenge plots, tragic romance and novels about people who try to achieve greatness, but with a certain degree of madness or deliriums.

My mal favourites can also give you an idea.

I'm not interested in most of the stuff you read, but I can think of a few things you might like.

Hashihime of the Old Book Town is a visual novel that I feel resembles Tatami Galaxy, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, and xxxholic.

Osamu Tezuka was a huge fan of Goethe. He drew manga versions of Faust and also referenced Young Werther in Phoenix. Of the manga I've read, I recommend Barbara.
https://myanimelist.net/manga/5402/Barbara

The Edge Chronicles is a long fantasy series I like to shill. Vox Verlix and Linius Pallitax are a couple of characters likely to appeal to you. A good starting point is "The Curse of the Gloamglozer," a story in the vein of Frankenstein.

Garth Nix was my favorite fantasy author as a kid. To you, I recommend his sci-fi book Shade's Children.

I saw that @Longnines mentioned The Giver, so I will say I think Gathering Blue is the better book. It's not a sequel so much as a 2nd story set in the same world.

I'm currently reading Democracy: The God that Failed, by Hans-Hermann Hoppe. So far, it's an excellent book, and quite relevant to many of the cultural problems we see to this day. It provides a very interesting perspective on the history of civilization and politics, from an Austrian-economics perspective.

Just last night started Murder on the Christmas Express by Alexandra Benedict

Basically it's just murder fiction set onboard a train, stuff I like.
It's nice and easy to read, but it's very man-hating, which err...idk if I like.
I think the killer as already been identified at the start of the book though, unless its a swerve.
It's okay so far though.

I'm currently reading The Secret Diary of Hendrik Groen
It's a fictional diary about an old man living in a care home for the elderly.
I usually like fictional diaries, but this is one of the worst I've read.
It's just very boring and I don't find the jokes and humour funny, and there's no real storylines either, although I'm not very far into the book.

Read La Petite Fadette by George Sand, because the last episode of Healer Girl referenced that story. It's quite fitting; the titular Fadette is shunned for being a witch, but her eventual husband gets to know her better and sees how independent minded and compassionate she is.

Just started Don't Go There! by Adam Fletcher last night.
It's basically a travelogue, with the author and his wife going on vacation to countries that are considered risky or just are otherwise unpopular choices.
Basically shit goes wrong no matter where they go. It's so funny and absurd sounding that at times it sounds like fiction (but pretty sure it's not).
I love the author's humour and self-depreciation of himself and his wife (who I'd be quite surprised if their still together considering all the things he said about her).
I haven't laughed so much at a book in a long time. If it carries on like this it'll be an easy 5/5 and a new favourite of mine.

Started reading Don't Come Back! by Adam Fletcher, the sort of sequel to the one I read before.

The author broke up with his long-term girlfriend (not wife like I thought she was) and he is travelling to find himself or what he thinks he wants I guess? A shame because his girlfriend sounded funny & spunky, but also hard work. I think they may get back together though.
A lot less countries are being covered in this one, so far it's just been South Africa. And shit is still going wrong, but this time in the form of the author's friend who's come along with him.
This book is still funny and enjoyable, although nowhere near as much as the first one.

Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier.

I'm almost half way through it, and it's so beautiful. There is a meditativeness to the writing in this book or maybe I feel meditative reading it.. there's also an element of mysticism in the way the nature, emotions, in the way characters relate to the nature around them.. it's very grounded yet mystical. I always feel like reading it slowly, and pore over the words or feeling of the words as I read it even though it's very simple. I'm reading almost every line twice or thrice..

It is a telling of a story of two main characters - Inman and Ada.. Inman is a wounded Confederate soldier, leaves the war to undertake a long arduous journey "to the west" to be together with the woman he loves, Ada.. And, Ada is a young woman who recently lost her father and is left to fend for herself, with no knowledge of how to care for herself, grow food, etc.. Her grief is also depicted without dramatizing.. the way grief, disillusionment, loneliness, love, nature, emotions etc are depicted is just beautiful.. The narrative alternates between Ada and Inman, and tells their stories so well.. we meet other characters (Ruby, Odell, gypsies, native Americans) and are made acquainted with their life too..

I cannot describe how beautiful this book is..

Writers & Lovers by Lily King..

What a change of ambience from Cold Mountain.. it's so fast-paced, set in 1997, about a struggling writer who recently lost her mother.. deals with bits and pieces of her grief, relationships, writing (holding onto something you believe in even if it takes years and is not empathized by others), youth... I just sat down to read it and it felt like it took me sometime to adjust to this book after a few days of reading Cold Mountain.. and I kept reading and by the time I took my eyes off the book, I'm half way through... just like that.. I don't like reading this fast haha.. it feels like I sat down, held the book, slipped and am in the middle... So I put the book down.. thinking of picking it up tomorrow.. :)

It's a good book, so far :) ...feels like I didn't even process it, but it's good.. maybe there isn't much to process.. I really loved the moment when she (the main character) sings to the geese, remembering and feeling her mother.. and now that I think.. several scenes touched my heart... Good writing.. :)

Almost finished The Cyclist Who Went Out In The Cold by Tim Moore. It's a nonfiction travelogue book.

The author is a huge bicycle fanatic and decides to ride a communist-era bike (MIFA) through 19 former communist countries, mainly unassisted. So it's mainly describing his journeys through the countries and interactions with the folks and places he stops at.
It's okay I guess? It's meant to be funny, but not all the jokes tickle me. Sometimes I can't really tell when he's making stuff up that didn't actually happen though, he's not the best story or joke teller. I don't really know the ins & outs of bicycles either, so don't always know or understand his issues with his bike when they frequently come up.

Probably end up being a 2 out of 5 for rating, and definitely not a keeper.

Finished 'Salem's Lot by Stephen King—my first novel of his. It starts off pretty slow, spending a lot of time introducing the town and its many residents. In the end, though, it didn’t feel all that rewarding to finish. The final confrontation with the big bad felt pretty anti-climactic and it wasn't very spooky overall. Not sure where this one ranks in his overall career, but it didn’t exactly sell me on him.
