Does being a model mean the person is truly good-looking?

Different areas of modeling favor different types of looks. Commercial stuff favors a more conventionally attractive look, high fashion/editorial favors a more... "interesting" look (which might not appeal to the vast majority of people because they're not conventionally attractive), and so on.

Personally, I adore Rila Fukushima's look and find her very visually appealing. I had never seen her before I saw the latest Wolverine movie, and I was totally intrigued by her, more so than anyone else in the movie for sure.

No, because each person and/or studio's definition of "good-looking" is different.

This is actually a huge pet-peeve of mine. "Model" does not necessarily mean that you are traditionally good-looking. Being a model is more about being aware of your body and how to use it to pose or showcase the item you're selling rather than just sitting pretty. I'm a photographer, and in my years, I've seen people who look fairly average absolutely blow me away in front of a camera, and people who are traditionally stunning look meh in front of the camera. Traditional beauty might help, but it's certainly not the be-all, end-all in the modelling industry.

Apparently not, because some models are really ugly.

I think that having a very distinguish and exotic look is more important than being a ''natural beauty''.
And many different agencies are searching for very different things.

Such as the women posted by OP.

Not really. My girlfriend got stopped by a model scout once, and while for me she's the most beautiful person, objectively I wouldn't say she has the obvious beauty. She looks rather boyish, barely uses make-up etc. They later said to her that they chose her because she has an interesting look in her eyes, she's tall, pale and looks natural, which is what they value the most. She turned the offer down by the way.
So yeah, most models are not considered pretty or even beautiful, but more like they are somehow interesting and are easy to work on. Most of the models look rather plain without all the make-up and a normal person probably wouldn't even notice them on the streets.
The only thing you can rely on is that you can't rely on anything.

The requirements for being a fashion model is to meet the physical perfection. A face prettier than the average face, height, etc.
Wrong.

The requirements is to be slim, tall, and have some kind of a "unique" face. Showing some original traits and still maintaining a "facial harmony" is what you need to be a model.

Nope! I went to a fitness expo yesterday and they had female bodybuilding models doing a parade... and they were so horrific, I don't think a single dude in the audience raised half-mast.

Not all models exist for the sole purpose of getting your lecherous jollies off.

Sorry to break it to you.

i think models aim to satisfy some subjective non arbitrary criteria that make people think they're attractive

I don't think its as high as everyone imagines though

The first one you posted, the Asian girl.. bangs definitely don't look good on her. And the angle is kind of unflattering. But as for the other pictures you posted in the spoiler tag.. I actually find her to be quite pretty. But I would like to see her with thicker eyebrows.
As for the other model.. I'm really surprised you posted her. She is very pretty and I really can't see how anyone would call her ugly.

I can't really answer you, asking if models are attractive or not. Mainly because I don't really follow models AT ALL so I don't think I'd really know..?

Wrong. It's about having an eccentric face and a huge ego.

It's the makeup that makes them look pretty and since they put A LOT of make up it ruins their face.

People's opinion on looks vary like a fruit basket. and the perception of "beauty" would also be different. In my perspective, Yes the lady is ugly. but it might be that in her country, that's the standard of "beauty" (WTF)

(So, what are you trying to say?) Bottom line, let us respect all beauties. ROFLMAO.

Different types of models have different looks. High fashion models are often very slim and tall. Super models are more curvy a bit. Advertisement models their looks depend on the type of ad. Perfume and cologne ads they often have very serene looking faces and smooth skin. Models for normal clothes often have just more cuter faces and look happy and positive. Alternative models of course have tattoos and piercings. Plus size models obviously weigh more or are taller. Art models have more unique features and exotic looks.

Beauty and attractiveness is subjective but really they are just looking for a face for a product and certain looks get stereotyped into certain products so they tend to stick to certain looks so people do not get confused on what the image of a product is.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder... but no. Being a model does not mean that you are really above average in beauty. It means that you fit the body and face image that the modeling agency and marketing companies or brands were looking for. Unfortunately, most models themselves don't seem to know this. I've had several model friends, and while most of them were decent people, they really thought people were lucky to gaze upon their beauty. None of them were above average and some not attractive in any way in my opinion. So I think the modeling world may have very strict body standards, but as long as your skin is clear for the most part, pretty much anyone can model if they have the confidence.

I'm sure someone's already said this before in this thread but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. edit: Lol would you look at that, someone said it right above me.

Models might be attractive in a general sense, but that doesn't mean that they are attractive in everyones eyes.

Most models are really thin/slim because of their agent's ridiculous standards and these wo/men have to keep up with it. For what reason? I don't know. Probably because they love their job, they get paid a lot, etc. As for the looks, I don't really want to call people "ugly". We all have different standards. Why does a model have to be good-looking anyway? To be presentable at least?

Bodybuilding models are used to show off muscle filled bods not an attractive face.

Most models are usually body > face

quick story: Back in the 80's or 90's my mom went to a modeling agency and while she had a gorgeous face they rejected her because she was short. (5'3/4) She wasn't fat either, she was model skinny.
She didn't guess that was the reason they rejected her, they told her then and there. No idea why she didn't try out for petite models but w/e.

When modelling agencies are scouting for girls, they aren't looking for the most beautiful girls they can find, they're looking for tall, long-legged, slim girls with a symmetrical face and amazing bone structure. So as long as they have killer cheekbones, it doesn't really matter if she's "ugly", she's going to be covered in a load of make up anyway. The fashion industry absolutely loves "unusual" looking girls anyway, just look at Lindsey Wixson.
Also, there's usually trends that the fashion industry has to adhere to, so for example the reason Kate Moss became a fashion model (despite being only 5'6"), is because at the time she was scouted, "heroin chic" was trendy and she fit that kind of aesthetic.
But this is all just with fashion/editorial/runway models, it's a lot different for other types of models.
I've seen plenty of girls that I thought were beautiful but they could never model because they don't have the right facial structure/body type/long legs etc.

Most people can be good looking models with a bit of work. So I wouldn't say it means they are good looking, but rather they just clean up well.
