I've been captivated from the beginning to the end and unlike most I really liked the pacing of the show. The peculiar art style and music are fitting to the overall atmosphere. Also I used to read a lot of ancient myths and legends way back when so I saw some familiar references here

Well that was unexpected for kiyoko to kill tear i didn’t expect her having that evil
Side it always shown that she only cares for her bother but I never thought she would take joy from killing someone

I was surprised that the originals were still alive it shame that the clones one died and all bc the want to start a new race heck the didn’t stood a chance to fight back the just got killed easily

In this last few episode idk why the made tatsuya a side character like he was the mc the whole time but after kiyoko getting pregnant he just turn into a crybaby and getting angry easily just bc of her sister I’m disappointed that he never got character development

The show overall was bit of hassle bc it was slow pace and the didn’t explain the back story not until like the 2nd half I would give this a 6/10 bc fhe introduced new characters without background story in which of made me more confused bc i didn’t know who the were

Below average anime for its themes, no one straight-thinking character, and a bunch of mentally ill retards deciding the fate of the world.

I don't remember why the clones were created, it was by accident right? So they served no purpose.

Why the originals showed up at the hotel in the end? Was it needed? Did the original Madoka have to kiss the countess so the sky falls?
And the clones needed to be killed, or was it done just for the drama? It kinda sucks if it was done just to make the ending more impactful, because... yeah, whatever.

And, at the end, the "new race" killed Tear? was tear still there, didnt it merge with the sky and disappear? Or maybe it was Madoka's sister who killed the new race?

An interesting series that was brought down a notch by the pacing. You could remake it with 13 to 15 episodes and it'd be better. Enjoyed some of the themes and use of music and the strange atmosphere and dour colour palette. Like many an anime series from it's era, it tries to make a play on restarting the world or the human race and what might come of it.

@Baskarite Actually the manga written by Shotaro Ishinomori predates EVA by about 20 years. So one could speculate on how much story might have influenced Evangelion itself.

@Farabeuf the anime and the manga are nothing alike though, they kinda just used same names... I guess it was also a fad of the time, reviving 60s and 70s stories and trying to make them bleaker, like Casshern Sins, Eightman After, Kikoushi Enma, Blue Submarine No. 6...

This last episode didn't quite hit the mark - then again, endings where characters die off one-by-one rarely ever do for me - but that final scene was good and I still enjoyed this anime overall.

Well that was… something lol. This kinda blew my mind apart, so Tear was born from Hiroko’s heart? Her jealousy caused the world to get ruined? I really wish there could have been more hints to this until now because we didn’t really learn shit about Tear until this very last episode beyond its existence and how it caused Heaven’s Gate to fold, I don’t hate this reveal but it did leave me flabbergasted for like half of the episode lol. And I guess Tear brainwashed Dr. Madoka and the originals of Fu, Fujisaki and Toru, there’s no other explanation for their 180 in personalities, it’s sad really because I was so interested in why Madoka would change so suddenly for the entirety of the show but it really was just not his own will, a shame because it kinda made his appearance underwhelming too.

And yep, everyone did in fact die, I had a feeling this show would not have a good ending back on episode 1 so I’m not surprised there, but the way it played out was pretty damn upsetting, the Gilgamesh and originals just brutalizing the characters we’ve come to know and love was tough to watch, they at least took a few with them but still, RIP to them all, tortured souls that found peace but were killed anyway. And my boy Kazmatsuri, after all his work and even capturing Tear temporarily, he got gunned down by Hiroko, I’m not sure what his plan was and if he could have stopped the cleansing flood, but I did hate seeing him go like that, he went back and forth from maybe villain to ally but he was probably one of my favorite parts of the show, he was the only one truly setting out to stop the Gilgamesh. And that very last scene… that was surprising, to think that after all Dr. Madoka/Tear and the Gilgamesh did to create a new humanity that was pure, the first thing that new human does is kill lol, I love the irony there, but I also love it for the fuck you to Tear, I’m not sure if Kiyoko’s baby has any memories of Kiyoko herself but I can see this being revenge too. And in the end, I think I can safely say the Gilgamesh were villains, seeing that they were doing the bidding of Tear for the “betterment” of humanity, only for their plan to be flawed anyway, yeah I’m glad I rooted for who I did throughout the show lol.

And that was the edgy version of Evangelion, I’ve seen people making this comparison for a bit now so I figured I’d use it to encapsulate the show lol. This truly was a unique journey, from the start I felt myself pulled into this series with its dark and gloomy atmosphere, the 2000s vibes were so strong and it really had some great ost, I also found the connections to the original Epic of Gilgamesh to be pretty cool. There was never a moment where I felt myself losing interest, of course there were issues I had with it like this ending not quite being what I wanted, or the Gilgamesh not using their monster forms enough, or budget constraints that held back certain action scenes, but overall I still found this to be a worthwhile watch and a series I don’t think I’ll ever forget, even if the metal concept didn’t deliver quite as well as I hoped.

And man the OP and ED, beautiful stuff, they completely contrast each other but fit it so well, and the ending song for this final episode being the main piano music we heard through the show, “Shall We Gather At The River”, very nice choice, all of these characters are gathering there now… honestly they’re probably better off than if they got to stick around in their world but I still wanted to see if it could have been fixed, oh well, still really enjoyed this watch.

I wasn’t expecting to hate this ending as much as I did. That was complete dog doodoo. I hated it so much.

I don’t hate it because it was bleak. I hate it because it was boring, uninteresting, illogical, and derivative.

The world didn’t end because any actual human with a motivation and backstory wanted it to end. It ended because some inanimate force was accidentally set into motion 15 years earlier. That’s just not interesting. I guess the true culprit is actually Yuki, who set this all into motion by greedily throwing a bunch of money at a scientific endeavor to discover the secret of immortality, but he’s been such a non-presence throughout this whole series that it’s sort of like, who cares?

Hiroko tries to save the world by sacrificing herself. Fujisaki stops her from doing so, even though he and his friends just all realized that life is valuable even if it can be horrible and sad sometimes. Did Terumichi’s gang win him over with their misanthropic argument? Did he just not think her death would’ve stopped the world from ending? His behavior was completely illogical.

Hiroko makes no further attempts to end her own life, despite getting her hands on the gun again. Perhaps this is because she’s just given up hope by then after watching all of her adopted children die, although she just spent the whole series sending those adopted children into deadly fights on a routine basis, so that rings hollow.

Tatsuya is a non-factor throughout this whole episode, even though he gets some fighting in toward the end and has a touching moment with Kiyoko after his death. It’s disappointing how little he ended up mattering in the end.

Worst of all, this ending is incredibly derivative of End of Evangelion, but it lacks any of the depth of character motivation, depth of character backstory, or depth of philosophy that made that ending so amazing. This was nothing but a banal imitation. It’s not the “edgy version of Evangelion,” it’s the hollow and lifeless version of Evangelion.

There were some promising aspects of this series, but it all amounted to nothing in the end. It didn’t have anything interesting, philosophically or psychologically, to say about any of the themes, motifs, or ideas that it explored (cloning, transhumanism, technological progress, immortality, God, recurring themes in global mythology, cyclical time, etc.). The one exception was the that development of Fu, Fujisaki, Taro, and subsequently Hiroko’s outlooks on life in the two episodes leading up to this were touching and psychologically significant, but that was basically all thrown away this episode with Fujisaki and Hiroko’s illogical behavior. Also, the final moment of the episode, where Kiyokocoon (or her daughter) kills Tearoko - which is a philosophical statement on how human nature is unchanging - was interesting in theory, but the execution was so poor that it just didn’t hit how I think the show runners intended.

How disappointing.

@PxHC the last two syllables look similar, they kinda look like an "oh" sound and the first looks like "ah", but "ah oh oh" doesn't mean much...

Liked the series

Also, I point i haven't seen brought up in this discussion is the fact that Tear is Hiroko's will and nothing more, that could imply that wanting the betterment of humanity is Hiroko's will too, her belief that a world without pesky egoistic emotions would stop her suffering, would make her be happy despite her unrequited love... this is such a tragedy since, at the end, love of the kids has brought her happiness, but her nihilistic depressice desires come to haunt her back...

That said, what about "Mother"? Why is she not mentioned again? Both her and all the themes regarding motherhood and "the womb" are unresolved, at least in my opinion, and this "mother" was clearly written off by the show... that said, I still enjoyed it.
