Anyone who gives a kick for daring to have a differing opinion on this gets a free toe removal. And "free" doesn't mean "pain-free".

I love Azumanga Daioh. I found Tomo annoying at times though, but she had her moments.

the most annoying character in this show has gotta to be that creepy male teacher...then followed by the loud one.. then followed by the dumb one...

Anyone that said Osaka gets a kick in the nuts/ovaries.

Heh, it's odd reading my post two years later, but I stick by it.

Was thinking about this show just the other day for some reason. Who knows, maybe I'd warm up to Osaka on a rewatch. This may be one of those rare series that warrants one.

Well, Sakaki is an important character in the show. But don't worry because what you have just seen is what I like to call the "Sakaki arc", which starts at episode 6 or 7 and finishes around episode 11. Episode 13 is a riot of Tomo, in fact, and one of the funniest episodes of the show. Do what you want, however, but dropping a series with such an ensemble cast just for one single character in it is maybe too harsh.

You are going to get a running gag with Sakaki's cat (although I think where it's most repeated is in the episodes I told you), in the same way you have Tomo disturbing Yomi or Kimura scaring the girls, and you'll have to face it, but there's enough screen time for the other characters in the 14 episodes you have left to assure your enjoyment.

Hope you won't need to blame me for the advice. Enjoy!

There are people who like the show and hate Sakaki. It's more difficult to happen with somebody like Osaka who is pretty much the recognizable and marketable symbol of Azumanga, but Sakaki represents a style of comedy that I don't see easy to sit through, at least in first viewings. The fact everything becomes slow around her, the seemingly silly nature of her conflict, the repetitiveness of the situations and her weird side are not something for every taste. It was an acquired taste in my case and I ended up liking her comedic contributions to the show as much as everyone else's, but I can largely understand if some people don't like her.

Tomo is the most annoying to me. The series needed more Kaorin+Chihiro, they were cute together.

Yeah, that's my choice too. And it's strange because many characters of Azumanga are in nature annoying; say the hyperactive and obnoxious (Tomo, Yukari) or the excessively calmed and weird ones (Osaka, Sakaki), maybe that's the reason why they are such a solid group of friends, because they are the only ones who can put up with themselves the whole time. What I love about the show is how they manage to turn this layer of theoretical annoyance into sheer friendliness, it almost looks like they built a world for these characters in which their cons are, in a way, what makes them endearing. It's amazing how a character like Tomo can end up being nice and likeable.

It's shocking for me of all people to say this because I LOVE cutesy characters......Chiyo actually annoys me sometimes.

Not because she's cute but because she's so goddamn perfect. Child prodigies happen, sure...but she also has this giant mansion, a wonderful vacation house, super-rich, super-sweet personality, she can cook, she's nice and neat, she makes her own meals, she's independent....she's the one who wakes her parents in the morning? OH. MY. GOD. At that part, I just rolled my eyes. It's just way too much to take because NO ten-year-old could possibly be that mature. (Sasami from Tenchi series annoys me for these same reasons)

Chiyo's only faults are her small stature and naivete with ecchi things....and those really are not true faults since they're played for laughs and are supposed to make her seem even MORE ADO-WABLE.

So....tl;dr she's a bit too much of a Mary-Sue.

Kagura is my least favorite of the girls though; crap, she's annoying; always ruining things for Sakaki whom I always feel such sympathy for.

Tomo is annoying but DELIGHTFULLY so. She does not ever fail to make me laugh so hard and the whole point of her character is to piss off EVERYONE around her. XD

I sort of disagree with this. Chiyo is introduced as an over-the-top representation of perfect Mary Sue little girl to the characters who constantly mention her luck at life. That's part of the joke behind the character and her conception, however it's only partially true, I think. Out of all the characters I'd say she is indeed the one who has less evident personality flaws, but they are equally big and as the show progresses they get more focus, specially through the catalyst that Tomo represents. For instance her naivety is not always played as a display of cuteness, as she is often subject to cruel pranks from Tomo, who soon notices that weak point of her and manages to trick and annoy her quite a few times. She also has the occasional sharp comment, specially on her love-to-hate friend, of course. But the biggest flaw she has is probably being overly competitive, in a quite unedulcorated way I'd say. This is something that the anime kind of lost or didn't focus on well enough, but there is a scene in the manga where Chiyo gets seriously pissed after Tomo getting a better mark.

Kaori. she was probably the most annoying but to be fair, she barely appeared and we didn't explore more about her character.

Kagura and Tomo, but Kagura actually got development. Tomo had some funny moments, but tbh way too obnoxiously annoying for me to like.

Tomo was annoying and sometimes insufferable, but the annoyance does not remove the charisma. Many moments of her were funny.

All of them had some moments of being annoying, but Tomo made the anime sometimes unbearable to watch, she was so annoying in some parts that I was about to give up the anime entirely, especially towards the end of the anime when she was clearly showing no signs of getting slightly better, I'm pretty sure that if wasn't for the fact that I was watching this anime together with a friend I would've dropped because she was that bad for me, even though the rest was fine and I had great laughs watching, but Tomo, oh god, it was painful to watch every scene she appeared. Yukari was kinda annoying too, but she took a lot of L's and I liked to see her taking them, the male teacher too had some of the worst moments for me, but Tomo stands out more between them because she's a character that was on scene almost every time and is almost impossible to ignore her, while Yukari had a diminished role and that weird teacher had few major appearances.

When a character is that bad for me even in a comedy show something is wrong, I can't remember even a single scene in which I enjoyed her presence.
