So according to the Naruto wikia this chapter ends the Fated Battle Between Brothers arc and I don't agree with they segregated it, since it feels like that conflict has been over for quite some chapters, I will address that here anyway but real quickly, I liked the chapter and I find Killer Bee to be pretty entertaining thus far. Naruto's training is eh but whatever.
As for the fated Battle Between Brothers itself, it was quite a step up from the previous arc in my opinion. In terms of the battle itself it was alright I suppose, nothing too interesting. Genjustu battles all kinda play out the same but it at least it leads to some cool pretend death shots, and once they got rid of that angle it got a lot more kinetic at least, though I didn't care much for it. The scale of some of the moves were neat, Susanoo and Sasuke's lightning attack especially. It was kinda boring but not too bad, and it had the length and scale that it should've had with how long this has been built too.
The stuff I did really like though was the aftermath of the fight. The decision to turn Itachi into a secret good guy isn't something I'm surprised at. Not only because Naruto does that a lot but because it was kinda obvious with Itachi's popularity that there was going to be more to him. Like, if you check the favorites here on MAL, Itachi's dwarfs most other Naruto characters in terms of popularity except like Naruto & Kakashi, so I knew something more would be revealed about him, though the question was could Kishimoto make a convincing argument to counteract all that we seen? And yeah, I think he did, I like how heavily it tied into the role of the Shinobi and war, elements of the series that have been around sense like the Land of Waves arc. It felt like a natural extension to this kinda thematic backbone in Naruto. I think it worked and as a side note, I love how this deception matches Itachi's powers. Like, Itachi is the character synonymous with Genjutsu, with illusions, so it's nice that his powers complimented his role in the story.
I do have a bigger issue with Sasuke taking that information and deciding to opt to destroy Konoha. Now from a character perspective, it fits Sasuke. His motivation his entire life has pretty much always been driven by revenge so him taking that information and going down the revenge path is a natural decision. Despite obviously going against the wishes of his brother. And his morality on killing is decreasing which is a nice way for Kishimoto to display a downward spiral for Sasuke. Prior to this he seemed to enact a strict no killing rule with his team but here, he explicitly states that the elders in Konoha need to die and he doesn't care about the rest. Meaning that while he still insists on granting his revenge on them, he's now more apathetic to the death of others where that didn't appear to be the case. The problem is that this exists to extend the drama between Sasuke & Naruto, and that is a conflict I just don't care about. Probably because of future spoilers that I happen to be privy too but regardless, I just don't care.
The stuff after that aftermath, which is what considered to have been the end of that arc, was alright. The aftermath of Jiraiya's death was handled alright, allowed Shikamaru a nice speech and considering he's the only Chunin Exam supporting cast that Kishimoto seems to care about after the time skip, I'll take every moment I can get. But the highlights for me were Kakashi, I loved his flashback with Jiraiya and I loved his embarrassment with having to read that smut out loud. Pretty funny moments.
Anyway, looking forward to the next arc. If people's favourite arc in Naruto isn't the Chunin Exams, it tends to be Pain arc, at least from what I can gauge. So, I'm hoping for some pretty strong material coming up.
*Edit*
Forgot to mention, the biggest hurdle Kishimoto had with properly explaining Itachi's true character was the aforementioned battle with Sasuke and I really do like the idea that he mainly fought so hard against Sasuke in order to free him from Oorochimaru. That was a really good way to tie in the path Sasuke walked in order to fight Itachi with Itachi himself, like resolving his younger brother of the mistakes he made due to Itachi's decision. Also, I really liked the callback to the head tap, re-contexualizing their relationship and Itachi's character with that one moment at the end of the fight was fitting and helped lead into the reveals pretty well. |
