Kunagi gives me slight autistic vibes, though that feels like unintentional coding by the writer, given he's willing to volunteer any and all info and seems to not understand social graces very well, all of which could be explained more primarily by his brain injury and mysterious past

Gaku being able to just keep talking without a slight shift when the cat jumps onto his shoulders is impressive, he must work out his traps for the cats to just jump up like that

So the one guy seems to suggest a delayed activation of the virus depending on contact, same with Gaku, he touched the one cat, but he didn't show any signs until later. Makes me curious if the initial visitor was just another carrier, since him just being the one that initiated it seems too easy.

And the other cats making contact and then vibrating like that suggests a particular reaction with cats versus humans turned into cats, since unless it works in reverse, cats infected by the people-cats don't turn into humans, so they're purely carriers of some kind

The anime is taking itself seriously with these genre tags of "Action, Horror, & Suspense".
I've determined that the trick to enjoying this series will be to ignore all those and watch it as a comedy.
If I don't, this will be unwatchable.

Avid enjoyer of Sci-fi, mysteries, and serious drama anime, although anything with good writing could probably hook me in. Love is War doesn't apply to any of these, but the dub still gets my 10/10. Anyways, Rio Futaba is best girl.

The fallout advertisements of cats. Were what kept me engaged.
Same with the street signs, building names/storefronts, etc.

The whole "cat" person world normalcy.
Was nice to see.

Also the art is excellent. And as ^ the environment is too.
I'll stick this one out for a bit longer at least.

No cat no life

The men look like they're straight from Hokuto no Ken, giving this an even stronger vintage b-movie vibe. I'm quite digging everything so far - especially the music, the overdramatic expressions and line delivery, the horror references - minus the cgi.

Gaku is the goat (tiger?).

It was like earlier this last year, I was showing my dad Mieruko-chan... where the art for the ghosts are really well done in the horror department, but the comedy comes from the situation of MC not being able to actively react to the ghosts around her, creating scenes that in-universe are suspensful but hit the right kind of dumbfounded-freeze-frame kind of scenes that I'm fairly certain are intended to be comedic, in a very dry comedy kind of way. My dad, however, when trying it, really just saw it as an interesting horror series. Overall, it seems like a hard line to play with, and largely subjective outside of whatever artist intention might be.

Mieruko-chan is a horror comedy (+ a little Slice of Life and whatever else). It has various scenes and moments within it, separately, which are clearly intended to be scary and frightening or creepy as well as moments clearly intended to be humorous. Even without the ghost gimmick, there were scenes intended to be funny, like Miko's friend Hana's antics, and scenes intended to be scary or disturbing taken completely seriously (like everything surrounding the teacher, the shrine kitsune kami or whatever they exactly were, etc.)

Everything I have seen from Nyaight of the Living Cat thus far suggests it's a pure parody. There is no scene intending to be genuinely scary and unnerving, but the whole thing is a comedy, with the source of the comedy deriving from the scenes intended to be scary to the characters but not to the audience, which because of the nature of the situation, just has the characters come off as silly and ridiculous for reacting the way that they do to the events they're faced with. Which is basically the whole underlying point and method/structure of a parody.

Horror comedies generally have both genuine fright and laughs, not the laughs generated from the source of the fright not being plausible (not being plausible of causing characters' fright and reactions, I mean). Horror comedies are trying to tell a "serious" (or partly serious) story, that just also has comedy in it. With parodies, the story itself is one long running joke and nothing in it is played straight.

I say and want to emphasize "intended", as in "intended to be scary" or not intended to be because it's still up to each individual viewer how they receive it. You and others can still genuinely be scared by a parody (hell, others can be scared from a completely unrelated genre or type of story, like a romcom, for idiosyncratic reasons like just one scene in it they find eerie and off-putting). And I'm not scared even by the 99%+ of horror aiming toward that as its intention just because I'm desensitized from binging all manner of horror from elementary school age and now you have to move heaven and Earth to get me to feel something on that front.

@WatchTillTandava ye, my point with that comparison was less that the actual style of comedy themselves were similar, but more to say that with both series the comedy can feel... underplayed, I guess?

I'm not one to get into the whole nitty-gritty of what normally separates genres like horror comedy from horror parody, normally. I was just expressing that, somewhat in solidarity in response to someone else confused by the tags, sometimes these things are harder to pin down and that eventually a mod or contributor can have that "horror comedy vs horror parody" argument I'm not interested in having and tag it accordingly.

Zombies, but cats, lol

As a fan of zombie films, I thought we'd get a typical zombie movie: initial infection -> virus spread -> survival.

That's more or less the zombie story. But because these are cats, there are some modifications, such as compassion for humans turning into affection for cats. The gore is changed to cute. Instead of transforming into a half-human, half-cat zombie or a half-human, half-cat zombie, they transform into a full-fledged cat. That's pretty much the typical zombie movie.

For now, I still don't know what's exciting about this anime, because so far there's nothing special about it, only the beginning is interesting. But I'm curious to see how they solve this problem. If this were zombies, the solution would be very simple: kill all the zombies. But since these are cats... I'm not sure the author would use the same method as in zombie films. And because of this, I think this anime seems boring because there's no action. One of the things that makes zombie films exciting is the action. So I'm curious to see how the author will try to keep us entertained with such a unique concept.

Because this anime focuses on cats, we naturally get a lot of information about them. Those who own cats will certainly understand some of the references provided.

Visually, this anime is very beautiful, especially the 3D animation of the cats, which is very smooth and seems to blend in with their surroundings.

I think this anime is about me, I'm allergic to pets and when I slept over at sis' house who has 3 cats at her place, one really late night really early morning I was just up holding onto a chair and deeply breathing and wheezing making my upper body go back and forth to try to make myself more comfortable, in the end sis' bf took me to the hospital he works at in order to get me oxygen through a mask, and the fact I had taken allergy pills too previously 😂
