Imagine thinking that "anime" is only about visual style.
That's exactly what it is about. The reason anime is instantly recognizable and is categorized separately from western cartoons is because of its artstyle. Nobody really cares if it's directed by JP people or not, or if it's intended for JP audience or not. If it looks and feels like anime, it's anime, regardless who made it.
| @BigBoyAdvance There is no doubt some people don't care about origin or if something genuinely is actually a Japanese Anime. To some people they will just look at something and call it whatever they want. The reality is there are people who are also passionate about somethings and care if something is genuine or not. If people live by the idea of simply qualifying anything based on looks they might be happy and content in owning something like this. lol  Reminds me when I was a child living in America for a few months for the 1st time Transformers Toys were all the rage during a time when Tonka produced a toy line called GoBots which was just thought of as a Transformer Rip-off. Many of my friends Parents back then Bought them GoBots instead of Transformers simply because they were cheaper to buy not realizing they are not remotely the same things at all. Even if GoBots came before Transformers. |

They should not add this stuff onto MAL. It is only anime if it is made primarily for the Japanese market, and it made, written and directed by Japanese people. It should also have a Japanese voice cast, although there are some VERY rare exceptions to this rule, like Afro Samurai. This is because it was the Japanese author's creative choice to only have an English voice cast, with Japanese subtitles in the Japanese market, because he thought it helped the atmosphere. Meanwhile, there is stuff like Housing Complex C that was only made for Americans and should be taken off of this site, along with all of the FLCLs except the original.
I even think CyberPunk Edgerunners should be taken down for not being directed by a Japanese studio, and having a mostly Polish staff.

@ForgotEyeWasHere Edgerunners was literally made by Trigger. The entire animation team is largely Japanese. It is a Japanese production and it's not like it didn't have it's share of JP fans going off fan artists and some fans I talked to. What Polish staff are you talking about? Besides Trigger confirming with CD, half of the producers, and maybe Pondsmith, hey can we do this and this (Rebecca design being on thing they pushed for), the OP/ED artist being Polish etc that was largely a Japanese production. Again where is your source lol? I mean MAL, story boarders, key animators, script writers, directors all Japanese. Like you realize you are on a website where you can easily validate the fact you are wrong. Edgerunners not being on here would be incredibly dumb. It's a notable Trigger work. The fact it's a Western IP is irrelevant. You might as well cut all the Masterpiece theater shows off here too lol despite some of those being important anime. Frankly as time goes on, MAL is going to have to change their definition because when 50% of your income is now foreign is anime really primarily for the Japanese market anymore? That is only going to go up as the international market grows and the Japanese market continues to stagnate. The Japanese produced animation definition is enough otherwise I guess no anime are going to be anime anymore lol. Every production today, definitely takes into account foreign markets and the fees they may get from foreign streaming. The western anime fandom is in general overly pretentious with what they consider "anime" in spite of the fact that anime is just the japanese word for animation in general, and MAL has generally proven to be probably the most pretentious as you can see with the Scott Pilgrim incident from November @LSSJ_Gaming Bollywood and Hollywood. We use the term JRPG and WRPG. American comics, Euro Comic, Manga. J-Pop, K-Pop. It's hardly only our community that does this. Nor are we pretentious for doing so. People qualify artistic works by region all the time if they notice some unifying characteristics. I mean if you really feel that way then stop using the word anime. We only use the word anime because it's a Japanese derivative of animation. Before that, we used the term Japananimation which is more explicit to talk about Japanese produced shows. If you take the Japanese out of the work we might as well just stop using the term anime all together. Japanese produced animation is a fair non arbitrary definition. |

The best thing about this is that now there won't be a bunch of whining and bitching Users trying to flood the forums with redundant rant threads over it. lol |
