Disliking anime simply because it’s popular, is probably the dumbest reason for disliking an anime. One shouldn’t have to check and see what the consensus is first before deciding on a score. Level of popularity shouldn’t be a factor at all when it comes to rating.

It’s a completely invalid reason to say for example: “I hate Hunter x Hunter simply because everyone else likes it”

Not really because it's popular, but more because I get tired of hearing about some anime. It's probably going to take me a few years before I can actually watch Attack on Titan. I don't think I can watch it and appreciate it right now.

Hated hunter hunter because I was tired of seeing bungee gum everywhere, decided to watch it and my opinion changed really quickly. No its not a valid thing

I mean i would say i'm a bit hipster so yeah... if there is a show i think is a 8 or something and it's popular i'll "hate" it a bit more haha, I don't think it is a lemigate reason tho haha.

I could be wrong, but maybe when some here say that it’s ridiculous to not like something because it’s popular they actually mean it’s ridiculous to go out of one’s way to convey how much they don’t like something, particularly when it’s unsolicited and/or simply because it’s popular alone.

I can’t speak for others, but I’m not a fan of berating others simply for *not* liking something that is popular. Most especially when their opinion is prompted, otherwise known as peer pressuring. I’m not a contrarian by nature as there are a lot of things that I do like that are popular or at least used to be. Like American R&B music from the 90s and early 2000s.

But there are also things and activities I don’t enjoy that are very popular, and some I don’t particularly like giving my opinion on at all even when prompted quite simply because of the above. For example, I don’t drink alcohol at all. Sure, there are many that wouldn’t care if I didn’t like something but there are just as many that would tease and even harass/bully me because of it. Or even worse, not being able to afford something like name brand clothing. Although that particular example is more prevalent with teenagers.

Also, I actually never had felt SoL/CGDCT aka “moe” anime as something being popular. At least not compared to shounen/battle anime, particularly with the Western audience. In fact, I think being a fan of it carries a stigma with many. Maybe there are a few in the genre that are nearly ubiquitous in awareness like CLANNAD, but that doesn’t mean it’s still popular today.

TL;DR: Just do whatever you like as long as you’re not hurting anyone and most of all, don’t put down others for not liking the same things as yourself regardless of its popularity.
