Is the power of the student council overexaggerated in anime?

Im barely convinced my school had a student council.... i remember at graduation that one of the teachers mentioned that our valedictorian was the head of the student council tho.
On the same token, our valedictorian was the biggest nobody in the school. So who knows how any of that worked, since effectively that kid had no affect on any of our lives.

Even in my school, the school captains weren't able to do much in the way of exerting power or organizing events. Maybe it's a Japan thing?

Anime mostly cater to a shounen audience going to high school, a seinen audience going to university and neets who are social shut-ins who brainwashed themselves into thinking school days were the paramount of their lives, through its idealized facade full of cute waifus and quirky personalities. That's for male audience, for female audience, it's a different topic I won't delve into. Of course, since so many titles have school as main setting, their student councils are going to have overstated power. Same goes for clubs, of which their members are made into prodigies up to rival with adult pros. It's pro-youth demagogy at work "we love you youth, you are the best, the future, unlike these entitled old fossils at the top of the pecking order!".

One year later and I still don't know where are those supposedly strong authoritarian student councils, because I keep getting the regular councils crying at the main characters for lagging in their club duties.

Of course not! A student's council promoting slavery and murder is absolutely normal don't you read the news?

i don't think i've personally watched an anime with this in it but i've heard about it from the internet. coming form someone in the United States, my school student council was practically unheard from except for the day we picked the winners from "voting". lets face it, it was just a popularity contest and it didn't mean anything to be on it.
I am the wind, wild and free. Come chase me and you will see. Dare you follow me into my dark abyss, Tread carefully should your heart go amiss. I left this world on swift paw. My fur shimmering without a flaw. I only come on night's wing. When the moon is full I do sing. The saddest of requiems, the loneliest song. You never saw me all along. For I am only in your dreams, in your Nightmares.

Yes it is.
My high school had a student council but it barely had any say even in things related to students.
