When I first started SAO, I had only previously glanced over the LNs a bit VERY briefly. After watching the first episode, and now the second episode, I fell in love with the series all too quickly. After wanting more, today, well, no more than a few hours ago, I started to read the LNs. Only 7 chapters in currently, but I already have a bad taste in my mouth.

For starters, the first episode was completely canon to the LNs, and now seeing and reading both, I was very pleased.

However, the second episode, seemed to fall flat. It was rushed, and the introduction of Asuna fell very flat.

Not sure what to think as of now, but its still very early to judge it overall.

For now, I'll continue to read the LNs and curb my SAO craving.

The second episode isn't present in the first novel.
It's a side story

This is because the episodes that aired and will aire for the next few weeks are based off side stories related to SAO. (Except episode 1, that was part of volume 1) Volume 1 focused on the much Higher floors and the conclusion

Episode 2 is based off the side story Aria in the Starless Night which tells the events of the 1st floor 1 month after the death game started.

and yes, Character development is important in this anime imo =x
That whole part was skipped sadly.

Seriously, if you are guys are butthurt because said part isn't animate or that it is rushed, go read the novels. The animated version isn't meant to replace the novel version.

As I said earlier...

As you know, the novel version is much better because it is more in depth, but given the time frame of the anime, cuts (and possible edits) are needed. What the anime is showing is just to get the main points across and I think it did well on that department. This episode did not disappoint me. In fact, I like this episode. If you are dissatisified as to how short the animated version of the side stories are, then by all means read the novel. Surely that would bring you more closure.

He didn't go mad, he acted in that way because he didnt want the huge group pointing fingers at each others to find out who was a beta and then maybe start a huge fight resulting in deaths.

And as for asuna, I can't really see A-1 pictures doing a good job at fan service, I mean just look at blue exorcist...

well after read the LN vol 1 aincard coz of curiosity,
what can I say is that it's one of the masterpiece of science fiction story

I only hope that anime version will at least make minimal 1 episode for each chapter so for 25 chapters in LN , anime version should has at least 25 eps too

My memory may be bad, but I think Kirito trolled everyone to stop the prejudice against other betas. Assuming I'm still remembering correctly, there are regular players, beta testers, and "beaters".

Beaters are the really hated guys 'cuz they seek to benefit only themselves.

Don't quote me on any of that.

I did like that the actual novel side story had information, such as the stuff that of 2000 people that died,
It was something like that. It /was/ narration, though, so they anime can't be faulted for not mentioning that.

pretty nice episode and wants more :D

Too bad that this was rushed one compared to the you know what...

I just hope that this won't be a 12-13 episode series though because it would certainly will be bad.... Since most of the good series are at 26 episodes or more.
12-13 ep one's just introduce the story at episode one then the other episodes are random fan service :/

...and 24 pages later, I'm ready to post. Man, that took forever.

I wish the LN readers (the ones who're upset) had read the first episode thread, because Netto_Azure pointed out that the creators of the anime specifically said that they were working very closely with the writer of the LN's throughout the whole process of making the show.

And as for events happening outside the game, well, it's not like the players would know that, and so for the moment, we won't either.

I mean, the side stories were written after the main novel, so there's gotta be some retconning present.

TL;DR- The LN writer has a good bit of creative control/input in the SAO anime, so however it is, it's how he wants it.

--

Did anyone else notice Kirito mentioning information brokers? I don't remember anyone saying anything about them before that, leading me to believe that it's a nod towards the novels, and Argo.

Decent enough episode, although the drama was a bit of a turn off for me since it wasn't well-made at all.
They can't just introduce you to a character and then 10 minutes later kill him off, and expect me to react to it. And that "he did what I couldn't do, he's a hero" shit" just isn't something you would say/think in the middle of a battle.

Don't get me wrong, the action and animation is awesome, just the badly made and out of place drama that pulls down the score to be honest.

After watching the 2nd episode (haven't read the LN prior), I felt the episode was exciting and gave off the feeling of adventure of beating a boss for the first time in an MMO. More than that, Asuna's introduction was great and it was quite funny how the bread scene was reproduced.

I was so intrigued by the story that I ended up reading Aria in the LN. If given the choice between the two, the LN version would win out but I think that the studio made the right decision here to avoid bogging the audience down in endless exposition and get to the action.

The anime is definitely going after a younger crowd (in general) than the LN and that these compromises were warranted to keep them engaged and keep the feeling of adventure alive, as opposed to slowing down to a pace of a slice of life which would have been the result had more of Aria been covered. I assume they will try to finish rest of the 20-cour (?) series and it feels that this is still part of the intro which is fine, but I definitely empathize with the complaints by those who have read the LN that are angered over the parts that were skipped because they were important to character development. Hopefully they will decide to slow down on the more integral bits and flesh out characters whilst keeping the pace fresh later on.

For now though, I enjoyed this episode and the anime in general, been awhile since an anime actually lived up to the hype so hopefully SAO can continue doing just that.

A Beta Tester is someone who gets access to the game before the general public, usually to help test for bugs and such.

When games are made, they're usually made in "phases".
The Alpha phase, which is just getting things up and working with the basics, the Beta phase, which is playable but buggy, and then usually the full release of the game. (Sometimes there's a Gamma phase if more testing is needed.)

Basically, Kirito had early access to the game to help test it for bugs, and therefore knows more about it than the new players. This is why Beta testers got a lot of hate- the newbies thought that the ones who had played it already (the Beta testers) weren't helping them when they could have.

You'll be happy to know that the author of the Light Novels based Sword Art Online on his experiences with Ragnarok and Ultima Online.

I think that people who read the Light Novel, Aria in the Starless Night specifically might be somewhat disappointed in this episode. As a fan of the light novel myself I didn't like this episode too much either, but after some thought I came to realise why they made the episode the way they did.

It's already been decided that they will be including all the short stories into the anime, meaning that on top of the original Aincrad and ALO stories, all of the side-stories will be included as well. This creates some time constraints. I thought Kirito and Asuna's first meeting would be made into a longer arc, but because of time constraints they didn't.

Now, they really cut out A LOT in this episode but if you think about it the main ideas are still there. What they wanted to show was how Asuna and Kirito met, the hate towards Beta Testers, then known as Beaters, and Kirito's self-sacrifice.

Some people may complain that they cut out Argo the Rat, but seriously, she shows up that one time and I think once later in the real world. Hardly a key character. For people who didn't read the novels, the episode is a good setup for what's to come.

Just wanted to voice my opinion as a person who was unsatisfied with this episode at the beginning since it's didn't follow the novel 100%. The episode was not bad at all, in fact it was good since its only purpose was to set things up for the rest of the episodes.

I'll hold back on rating this anime, as much as I loved the novel, since episode two shows that they're going to be changing some stuff here and there. As long as the main themes and key events stay faithful to the novel there shouldn't be that big of a problem in my opinion.

I seriously want his sword so badly, i have never been intrested in this sort of stuff but the moment i saw that sword i instantly wanted it

That is one badass sword. I want.
Won't even bother. Just buy out when it's out on the net. I saw Berserk Swords and Fate ones along with FF ones so most likely this sword will be available to buy. Too bad I saw only one anime/FF sword made to be used for combat also. I would love to use this one to hack shit like wood.

Hack shit like wood? Why'd would you hurt it so.

It's for displaying. Displaying.

I'd never use a collectable in a damaging way.

So is there a better order to read the novels?

I don't know if you would want to say "better" but, because sword art online vol 1 got so popular online and, people where asking for more then author made volume 2 side stories to sword art online which takes place on lower floors. You can read the chapters in chronological order if you think that is "better"

This is what I'm doing, but only after I've seen the corresponding episode.

No, Asuna will not be in the next episode.
Not unless the author decides to change the story.

And @ScarletMuse- thanks for the compliment.
I know what beta testing is like, so I kinda feel for the poor testers who got all that pressure.

Heck, the developers might fundamentally change the game for its release, and new players would still expect a beta tester to know what's going on. >.<"
