Kind of drawn out/repetitive at times but it did have its thrilling moments and compelling story.

Pretty dark stuff and also a bit slow but I'm sure it'll get faster.

It was ok but I expect much more from the story.. I hope it won't be 74 episodes about operations and doctors ;d

I hate it when anime/manga that I enjoyed ends, especially when there could be much longer plot and when I love main heroine :P

I wish I had magic glasses that let me see real world in anime colors ;)

A nice start to a series that I've heard is one of a kind from an author who has brought us many amazing series from Monster to Pluto. I've heard a lot of praise about Naoki Urasawa and I'm happy to finally be diving into his work.

This first episode was quite entertaining with plenty of great moments. I really like are main character doctor Tenma. This episode may have been slow but it really showed us some dark themes with the director picking and choosing who Tenma operates on, even when hes about to operate on someone the director calls on him to operate on someone else such as a politician.

Throughout this episode I really enjoyed the atmosphere that is portrayed throughout, the darkness of it all is really nice and the animation helps with the atmosphere. The animation is also very solid for its time.

Im glad Tenma chose to operate on the boy instead.

I cant wait to watch the next ep.

now that's what i expect from an anime.. a compelling story from the first episode itself. we got a brief introduction of every character. i would say it is pretty nice paced story for what it's trying to achieve i guess.

Very powerful pilot episode. I cannot wait to see what happens next. It's not very often that an anime that isn't action-based pulls my attention, but here we are.

I spent almost 40 minutes just for one episode because honestly, I was really nervous. Who should be killed? Is it the boy? Is this the beginning of disaster?

An aside
Dr. Tenma's face was modeled by Hiroyuki Sanada in his younger days

The first episode did a really good job getting you acquainted to a few of the characters and starting to put you in that political mindset of the environment of the show and some of the psychological aspects of it.

This is the second time I've watched this anime, but the first time I only watched up to episode 27, and I didn't pay any attention to the characters' feelings. I was just watching it to practise my Japanese, but it really is a cool anime! I want to keep watching and understand more about everything!

The old-style animation, with its touch of reality, is really cool too! I get excited just watching it, even though it's a story with heavy events, I find this anime easy to watch, unlike Elfen Lied for example, which is quite crazy.

@shiratori90

What an absurd comparison of two unrelated anime.

Naoki Urasawa is OBSESSED with Europe and European aesthetics and specifically the West Germany - East Germany dynamic.

@Dienen

His latest work got nothing to with Europe and takes place in Japan only.

@JoeChip It doesn't change his West Germany - East Germany obsession. He makes it a point to bring it up multiple times for multiple srcs in Master Keaton. And there's a reasok he chose Gesicht as his focus character for his rewrite of Astro Boy. And there's Billy Bat which is more global but still has that undertone to it. And now Monster which is a work that screams "I love Germany".

Okay, but why did you feel like posting all this under episode 1 discussion thread of Monster instead of making a separate thread?

@JoeChip Because watching the episode and seeing the news broadcast on east germany situation shows that Urasawa thinks about the dynamic more than actual Germans do.

decided to start over. really interesting start, the tension at the end as well. he is a neurosurgeon because he wants to help people, not for the financial gain.

reminds me a lot of early 90s thriller movies that suck you right in and you on the edge of your seat. Tenmas choice to operate on the child instead of the mayor was a great climax for the episode and surely wont come back to bite him in the ass, right? :)

Feel bad for Dr. Tenma, bro has to live with the fact that following his Director's orders have costed a person's life, interesting beginnings I must say.
