Oda might have had a great tutor in the form of Watsuki, but he's only good at putting on a show, which is an achievement, but nothing new. I mean, the first arcs of other shounens did the exact same thing, but now its just getting old. Time for some new blood. |

And those who say popularity doesn't affect their favorite series can't exactly be considered reliable. Popularity always affects a series. I mean, look at AoT? SAO? The creators will begin to care less about the story and more about pleasing the fans, and as a wise character once said, shounen series that go past 10 volumes coast on their success. What shounen series? Well, first, what do you mean by depth? What's deep about a gang of people beating the tar out of other people/beasts? Sure, characters can be good, but it takes something truly special to break apart an entire genre and then throw the piece in a blender and make something tasty. One Piece might not be utter shit, but it only has its size going for it. |

The entirety of One Piece's storyline has been mapped out in the very beginning, and every new Arc gives the entire series a new perspective. Sheer size doesn't matter, for example Gurren Lagann, which is just trash that uses its scale to seem epic to cover up its lack of real substance, it's about what you do with the scale of your storyline, One Piece fully utilizes it in a way no other manga can compare, connecting various storylines and characters together as it goes on. With such a large cast of characters, One Piece still manages to be diverse and develop them nicely. One Piece is about pleasing the fans first and foremost, nothing wrong with that, since it manages to do that while remaining high quality in terms of story, characters and themes. If you think One Piece doesn't have much depth, then you have missed a significantly large portion of each and every Arc. Many serious themes such as slavery, political oppression, the meaning of being an individual and what it means to live has been an integral part of One Piece since the beginning, and the passing of torch aspect of One Piece is done in a very unique and symbolic way no other series has done. One Piece is not just about size, there are so much more to it. Come back when you stop jizzing over garbage. |
| What, in your opinion, made the series so popular in the first place? Its beginning is about as well executed as Joseph Joestar's attempt to be a father to Josuke (read: its shit). A dash of spice shouldn't have been enough back then and it definitely isn't today. Lack of substance on the part of TTGL? Well, that's for another day, although its surprising that you fail to recognize greatness that is as in-your-face as that. Growing up and discovering yourself is something all shounen's try to convey, even One Piece, but they all, with the notable exception of TTGL, come across as forced, like they're doing it just to earn a buck. Serious themes? There are themes such as that all across anime. Hell, if you look at a harem long enough, even that has themes. One Piece can be as unique and symbolic all it wants. It won't change the fact that its gotten out of control. Its hogging the limelight and its time it died. It may be a dog eat dog world, but One Piece is one dog that just needs to be put to sleep. Its stupidly huge, so huge that its story doesn't even make any sense anymore. I'd rather have a contained story told in 194 chapters than a story that just keeps growing to the point of suffocation of its fan-base, insulating them to the point where they feel like they need to convince themselves that everyday anime themes like the ones you've mentioned are all of a sudden special because their series is now doing it. |
