Mine would be Clannad and Kamichu.
I thought Clannad would be filled with excessive fanservice and shitty harem scene.
But I'm glad I was wrong :)
And I thought Kamichu was a shitty moe show
Apparently, it was a very good slice of life series.

Bakemonogatari - I heard a lot of shit about it and avoided it for a long time, but wow I was blown away of how awesome it was. Those characters and witty conversations were amazing.

Madoka Magica and Black Butler are probably the 2 big ones for me.

To a lesser extent: Is This A Zombie? Terra e and Lyrical Nanoha if only for the second season and movie(s)

From my experience, having low expectations going into a series often makes you enjoy it more.

Madoka Magica first seemed like some random magical girl shizz but after a friend showed me episode 3, I was hooked. Same went for Sakurasou; I did see a bunch of ecchi screencaps and thought it was just that, and then the feels-train came over to pick me up. Kokoro Connect and Oreshura were also pretty meh at the start but I kept asking for more the moment I hit the halfway mark.

TTGL. I didn't like mecha at all at that point. And even if I did, there's no way I could've anticipated this level of epicness.

Honestly I wasn't expecting much from Shingeki no Kyojin.

The premise seemed pretty lame. Now it's easily one of my favorites.

Desert punk - has a lot of negative reviews and most anime with ecchi does not have a great plot

Madoka Magica and Shingeki No Kyojin for me.

For Madoka, at first a was all like, "Ew, this is just another magical girl series. I'm not watching anymore magical girl series, I was over that since I was 7."

Of course, I only watched the first episode back in 2011, and now It's easily one of my favorite series to date.

For SNK, I thought the whole Titan thing was stupid back in the Spring anime season. Fast forward to July, and now I have successfully caught up to both the manga and the anime in about three days.

And now that I think about it, I didn't think Clannad was all that great, but not as extreme as the other two.

Probably Akira. I wasn't too sure about it.

It ended up being the greatest THING I have EVER seen in media.

Seriously, my jaw dropped within the first 5 minutes.

Ghost in the shell: stand alone complex for me. I didn't dislike it, however the initial episodes of season 1 were slow paced and I found them rather dull. I even contemplated dropping the anime, but since I was on vacation with no internet and just a few anime on my hdd, I decided to keep going. Definitely the correct decision.

psycho pass- almost everyone talked about how great it was so i had really high expectations. i watched the first few episodes but they were hard to get through since the show was slow paced early on. i was hooked after about 8 episodes though. the hype was worth it in the end

it was the same for code geass but r2 wasn't as great as r1 with all those plot holes and explanations that didn't make any sense

Great Teacher Onizuka. I never really enjoyed Slice of Life so my expectations were not high at all. But GTO was pure awesomeness.

Tough one. Probably Slam Dunk was the biggest surprise for me. Sports anime have always only been so so and I was not expecting to be laughing as hard as I did in Slam Dunk. Was the biggest surprise of any anime I've seen because nobody ever recommends it.

RahXephon. I'm not a mecha fan at ALL. But I guess it was the plot that drew me in.

I recommend it to everyone o-o

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.
I remember when I first watched it , I got to about episode 4 and ended up dropping the show. Some friends of mine finished the series and were raving about it, so I watched it again, and fell in love with the show.

It's one of my all time favorite shows, and I've watched it about 5 times over now. <3

Bakuman. I wasn't sure what to expect of it, went in with a really low hype. But came out with one of my favorite series of the past decade.

I agree with this! RahXephon was actually tough to get into. The first 2 episodes were strange. But once it gets to you, its amazing

Honestly, Fullmetal Alchemist. It didn't attract me due to me having this dislike for weird powers that aren't natural (alchemy) but once I watched a few episodes, I started to love the show and then, it became one of my favourite animes. Speaking of that also, I just bought the original series today from amazon. Currently, I am watching Brotherhood which is supposed to be even better due to it "following the manga closer" although I don't really care much if it does follow it or not, as long as it has an amazing story, that's good enough for me.

I liked Samurai Champloo well enough from the outset, but I figured it would be like my experience with Cowboy Bebop, i.e. I wouldn't like it. Turns out I ended up liking it a whole damn lot.

Kami Nomi synopsis is silly at first and I'm not even finish reading pilot chapter when I first try it. But when I decide to buy it's anime DVD on a whim i become one of the best thing I have ever seen and read.
Kickstarter for Rokujouma is fully funded. Good work everyone. Lets wait for the result of our hard work together.

Fullmetal Alchemist here too. The whole alchemy thing turned me off when I read the synopsis, but when I started watching it, I loved it. Although it got a little slow in the middle but the last few episodes were simply amazing. Starting Brotherhood now.
Oh, and DBZ as well. The character style looked really weird to me at first when it aired on TV but as it gradually progressed, I got so absorbed. So much that I can easily call it my favourite childhood series.

"Say 'I love you'" was great for me. It's not one of my favorites, but it's up there. I really enjoyed it and it was surprising how much I liked it for a random anime that I picked out on Crunchyroll on a whim because of the main character's name: "Tachibana"

Azumanga Daioh. Didn't know what to expect from that.

Hunter x Hunter. Watched it after Yu Yu Hakusho, which had almost bad main characters, jumpy plot and a lot of boring moments. Hunter x Hunter in every aspect was much better.

Bleach. Just wanted to try something new. But the anime was good.

I actually don't know if I said this before in here.

But Lain was the show I ended up loving a lot even though I never wanted to watch it.

For some reason I always thought it will be something like Elfen Lied. And I hate Elfen Lied.

The name just sounded so stupid. Serial Experiments Lain... More like Serial Experiments LAME MUAHAHAH

But when I actually got around watching it I was heavily impressed with it.
I've never seen anything like it before and it ended up as one of my favorite anime ever.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica. Before I saw this anime I didn't like anime at all and just wasn't into it. It was a funny story. I stayed at a friend's house at a weekend and he is a huge anime fan. And he had a big wallscroll of Madoka Magica in his room (hard to overlook) and I always thought "Why does he has it there? This looks stupid and so girly (normally I'm not such a douchebag but the wallscroll just looked that way)". He always said that he likes the anime and thinks it's a masterpiece and stuff but I couldn't understand it. But on that weekend I stayed there and was so hyped for a game that was going to be released next week and I wanted to stop thinking about it and so I decided to watch one anime he had there and I picked Madoka Magica. Best desicion of my life. Watched it in one run with a nice comfy headset under a blanked. I fucking loved that show (and still do) and that's automaticly when I began with anime.

Also Shingeki no Kyojin. I always heard a lot of people talking shit about the anime, how it sucks and how it's overhyped and overrated. Then I decided to watch it. Either it's me being a noob in terms of anime or that show was really that great but I can't see how people think that show sucks. Opinions, opinions.
Time is money, but money won't turn back the clock.

Kobato.

I actually thought I would hate it as it seemed to be a show for much younger children without and real depth (at least in the first episode). In addition to that, the whole thing seemed a like it wouldn't have any serious material. I was surprised at how touching the show was, and even more surprised that I enjoyed every second of it.
