Surely Madoka and Hommura could've kissed one time, she literally has homo in her name.

Really cool to see all the different ways magical girls incorporate their soul gems into their outfits.

"I won't let your prayers end in despair". She really sacrificed everything for the greater good

The art was fine. The narrative is just retelling Faust. Characters are incredibly boring and unrealistic, full-on plot devices, being nothing more than an archetype.

Supposedly a dark and mature anime does nothing more than repeatedly throwing shockbait into your face with no particular reason other than the shock-value itself. The symbolism that, just like in Evangelion, is here just for fun and means nothing. The same goes for random ass sci-fi elements in an overall fantasy show, trying to explain magic with pseudoscientific terminology, ever in vain hoping to at least slightly overcome the boundaries of tautology.

Just wish for infinite wishes
Just wish for not dying
Just wish for infinite energy
"Wishes are kinda unlimited but limited actually" WRONG! WORLD MAHOU SHOUJO HAPPINESS MADOKA UNIVERSAL OMNIPOTENCE!
How can Incubators even grant wishes? They seem to be creatures of science, not magic. The introduction of sci-fi elements really ruins everything.

What do you mean you have infinite attempts at convincing others that the cat thingy is fooling you and you still fuck up? Like, you got powers involving TIME MANIPULATION, everyone knows that, and still no one believes you? Even if they wouldn't take her word for that in any way, can't they just ask Kyuubey? He may not present the full picture, but he probably won't lie if asked directly. Though, even if he would lie, you literally cannot fuck up cuz time traveling is OP.
How do you even lose, being able to stop time? It's on the same level of bullshit as saying that Jojo's Stardust Crusaders could win against Dio without Jotaro's help. WRONG! 時を止まれ!!

(a nitpick im sorry) Where did Homura get so much of anti-aircraft weaponry?

Walpurgisnacht, as once stated, is coming only to that city specifically. It's not an apocalypse. Just take Madoka away.

What was the point of everything, if in the end we got Pucci-type reset, basically undoing everything shown throughout the anime?

Kyuubey's indifference towards Earth's fate after witch Madoka was unleashed contradicts his approach with all of it "benefiting humanity in the long-run." I liked him better when he was illustrated as a pragmatic, morally grey character. Also, what do you even mean "meeting a quota"? Your species cannot produce emotions, and the amount of species in the universe that would be able to is certainly limited, if any more exist at all. Just letting one of them go completely extinct isn't just non-pragmatic, it's downright MORONIC and EVIL, which doesn't meet his character at all.

A lot of problems could've been solved if anime was 24eps, not 12. Perchance.

I don't like yuri.

3/10 solely for hype moments and aura.

Off to reading Demonbane now.

@Zarutaku Being the character enshrouded in a gloomy backdrop, while the other characters you initially liked watching in a similar atmosphere get the role of watching you instead.

How'd that feel?

Wew, I probably have to rewatch this for more understanding but tldr, this is peakest of peak.

I feel like this anime redefines what magical girl/mahou shoujo anime should look like or aim for even if this is my first magical girl anime I watched xD

10/10.

Well it was an ending…it wasn’t an overly happy ending and it was more depressing but at least the ending makes sense in tone I think? So much to unpack, just Madoka becomes a goddess, erases witches from the face of the earth but at the cost of her not existing at all, everyone’s memories of her apart from Homura are wiped completely and Magical Girls still exist but fight monsters called the Wraiths and Kyubey still exists, damn it. It’s ultimately a bittersweet ending and yeah I’d say I approve of the ending. Pretty emotional stuff here. Wow it’s finally over for me and I gotta say it’s been a ride, a disturbing, weird, ride but it wasn’t a dull one at least. To people who think it revolutionised the Mahou Shojo genre, it didn’t, it merely pushed the genre to MAKE more darker animes in this genre which was already a thing with titles like Utena and Princess Tutu but I feel as a show when you take away that claim as a whole, it still holds up as an incredible show.

The atmosphere for the show is suitably dark, the characters are sympathetic enough that you care about them, the soundtrack is one of the best that came out of the show, animation is just beautiful to look at and for something that was from 2011 that’s saying a lot. In the same year as Steins Gate, Hunter x Hunter, Fate/Zero (which ironically enough the latter in question is made by the same person who made this show.), plus Future Diary at that. Never thought I’d see the day when Madoka would be something I would have to watch at some point but there it is and I fully understand why it’s one of the biggest shows of the Mahou Shojo genre and damn it, it’s awesome. It’s not something I will want to put on all the time but it has certainly left an impact on me overall. Is it worth the hype? Most definitely but I recommend maybe try a couple of other Magical Girl shows in order to get a grasp of the concept before watching. It’s amazing but man it can rip your heart out at times and slice you up in two when you least expect it. This show overall will get a 9/10 from me.

I understand the hype after the second half, but this original anime is somewhat overrated.

The first half and direction flow of scenes in their execution is so awkward.
The little sub plots of events leading the small themes all interconnecting over this teen drama wasn't so great.
What bothered me the most in the first half was the scenes...

The theme song playing practically every episode, with barely any other soundtrack was annoying and unoriginal, even though I love the composer since I first heard her with Pandora Hearts.
Tones of drama in a scene with music are ended with music cutting out abruptly.
The whole flow and pace of a horrifying scene is really awkward and rushed as well.
Mami's death is awfully done. It's poorly directed in emotion. So flat.

The overall fear and horror of fighting to the death in these weird dimensions feels nonexistent as well.
It's not exactly a typical teens anime having delusional fun oblivious of the real danger. It's worse. It's just flat ignorance of not knowing how to set the dark tone of such a world. That sucked.

The rush of event from event from Mami's death, Kyoko's entrance, Sayaka's drama is oddly fast and awkward as well.
They all die fairly quickly, even if its only 12 episodes.
At least they have some monologues that solidify their reason as a character for a theme/message to the story, but the pacing and lack of more depth to their drama is underwhelming.

Fortunately, after around E5-6, the second half, the action picks up, and the true epic twist plot of Homura being in her 5th timeline to save Madoka and the world is revealed. After that, it's pretty great to an extent.

But its all a bit too easy in how rushed it is or whatever.
With those flows in its overall execution with the behavior of some side characters and several lack of other things. 6/10.

Even though, I can understand the uncritical blind surface that it may seem like an 8/10.

Decent franchise, but I wish it was execution far better and darker in the first half, with some improvement and more depth in the second half.
... Funny I listened to Kalafina's theme song years before, and even futher watched the English Voice actors on a ask an anime character panel several times, so I knew about Mami's death and Madoka becoming a god beforehand, along with Kyubei being untrustworthy, with Homura loving Madoka for whatever reason.
