Of course happy endings! That's my preference, but the ones with sad endings will have a more long-lasting impression on me.

It's totally possible; sadness and negative feelings in general are to be appreciated

As for the topic at hand I'm really partial to bittersweet endings (Gunbuster, End of Evangelion) but I'd say sad endings are marginally preferable to happy endings.

Rarely the case for me, but I definitively think Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind would've been better off with a sad end

Happy endings. I generally loathe dramas, because I hate crying tears of sadness. But, I have watched a couple shows and not really expected it to be a drama, and they turned out well. It's just, I suppose, I can really only stand a drama every once in a while (maybe like 3-4 months).

I just generally like to have a happier tone to the anime I'm watching. Drama can get really predictable and boring too.

But all of this is beside the point. Happy endings are ftw simply because I usually find myself loving the anime more the happier the ending is (Steins; Gate for example).

But of course, there are a few exceptions, and not all endings that are sad to one person may be sad for me. I am sort of an optimist and usually that skews things a bit.

It depends...like most people, I love bittersweet endings because they make you think. But I also like a happily-ever-after ending once in a while, because they make me feel...well...happy. :D

Personally it depends on the whole story if it should be a happy or sad ending to me.

Some animes give you the feel that make you want it to be a happy ending and others the opposite.

For example, If any of you watched F/SN honestly, I'm glad it ended how it did.

If it ended the opposite of that I probably would've just named it one of the obvious most cheesy endings of all time.

Endings of some animes are actually better at times with a sad ending instead of a happy and same vice versa, however it's all up to personal opinion so it depends.. I for one find both equally satisfying!

I truly like sad/bad endings.

in fact i hate most of the happy endings unless they are really conclusive and made sense.

I hate when shows pulls a happy ending out of nowhere just to please idiots who wants a happy ending, so i can't help to dislike those kind of people

For me, it depends; if I like the characters, of course, I will wish them ultimate happiness *cough*
But sad endings are more memorable and generally carry more impact.

I think it's healthy to have a good dose of both, as it's nice to get hit by reality after watching so many "fairy tale" endings, but it also makes those fairy tale endings that much more powerful after seeing how things can end up so wrong.

In sad animes, I like sad endings because it makes me think after finishing to watch the anime.
I think people are better to deal with happy endings, of course a happy ending is almost to expect from any anime and a sad ending is sometimes unexpected and creates confusion.
Now tell me, you all want a happy ending. Is it good for your conscience or for the anime? Are you thinking about yourself or about the anime?

That depends very much on what happen, and what people would judge to be sad and happy. Of course I'm always looking for my happy endings, but some people could call them sad endings. I just hate the sad ones, and they remove a lot of my anime's enjoyment, making me rate it way lower than if the ending was happy. I have many anime I was itching to rate 10 because I was loving it, but then, a sad ending. No way I could rate it a masterpiece.
Two clear examples of this are Wolf's Rain and Shiki.
Wolf's Rain was brutally crushing, if you ask me. There was no need for such a thing...

Its not really about how i think the anime should end, I like it to be according to how the anime is. Its not like theres going to be a terribly sad anime that all of a sudden gets all happy, it would make no sense yet it does happen in animes but dosent quite seem right all the time, but thats in my opinion but i guess happy endings are what i prefer but w/e works best for the end is fine with me. There are only a few anime endings that make me feel like NOOOOO lol.

Generally sad as they leave much more impact, but some series just don't deserve to end badly.

If Steins;Gate had a crushingly depressing ending it wouldn't have ended up as my favourite anime.
If Cardcaptor Sakura had a bad ending, that'd just be fucked up.

And so on.

I almost always prefer either sad endings, or sweet endings. For example, I wouldn't necessarily call the ending of angel beats sad or happy, but it falls under sweet. Of course a lot of it depends on the anime in question.

It would be dependent on whether a series starts out happy or sad. Which means, If I'm watching a happy show, I expect a happy-ending and vice versa with sad shows.

hm. I'd have to say I like endings that are in character, weather that makes them sad or happy. It bothers me when I get to the end and everything is either suddenly magically happy everywhere or just kind of stops and everything is shoveled in at once to get to the end. My favorite is when a character who changed along the way is highlighted, because it makes you think through the whole story again at the end.

Happy or sad is irrelevant. What matters is the story that builds to the ending and whether or not it fits.

I'm a-ok with either or.

Happy or sad, either endings which 'flow' with the rest of the story telling will do. Though, with that said, I personally think there's too many happy endings which become overly predictable whereas sorrowful endings might bring a more memorable effect.

Sad endings. Happy endings are so overdone with without any trace of creativity. Not that I have seen nowadays, anyway.

I mean, come on, some of the best anime has the saddest (or at least, bittersweet) endings; Monster, Madoka, Jigoku Shoujo, Evangelion, Ghost in the Shell (movie), 5 cm/s, Death Note, Air, Akira, etc.

There are exceptions, of course, such as Hourou Musuko and Kanon (though I think there's some bittersweetness in the latter's ending, IIRC). Not all happy endings are bad, of course, but it's just so rare to find creatively or meaningfully done ones. You know why? Because reality sucks, and reality is sad and harsh. Deal with it. And those sad endings did (deal with it).

I have to agree with you on that comment. Usually, when an anime has a sad ending it makes me think a lot more about that anime. Sad ending also tend to make me sad but happy also, if you can understand where I am coming from.

Too many happy endings out there, so I have to go with sad, or at least bittersweet. Those usually turn out to be the most memorable, and have the most lasting impressions on me.

When it comes to anime, you gotta have both endings. Sad endings...are like the ones I'll remember for a long time. As for happy openings, depending on how the anime went, I may or may not remember them much.

It depends on the overall mood and feel of the anime itself really, If the overall storyline is more suited to end on a happy note and not on a bad one or vice versa, then so be it...

Unexpected ones,Example:The anime Is romance,The main male and female
Protagonists that liked eachother are about to get married as the end of the series,Then as there about to put each others rings,A very crazy guy on drugs comes and murders them with a machete for no reason,
^Best ending ever.

It all depends on how the story goes, sometimes something that should have ended with a sad ending but instead turned out quite the opposite. So there were times when the one anime that should be end with a sad or happy ending.

It depends on the kind of show it is, but I generally prefer happy endings. I think I get it from my dad, who pretty much doesn't see the point in watching anything without a happy ending.

I would say again dependent on the story. Sometimes its great to have a anime trundling along and you assume its going to have a happy ending then you get a royal kick in the teeth when you get a sad ending.

Not a great example ( and entirely the opposite), and i almost dropped the anime like 5 times due to the shoddy animation, but I actually quite enjoyed the ending of Suzuka. Although cheesy, it was somewhat fitting, and i think the ending showed a that there was slightly more depth to it than i first thought. I thought that it was actually going to end on a sad note as 15 minutes into a 23 minute episode there didn't seem to be a chance they would manage to wrap it up into a happy ending, but they managed it and i think it worked rather well.

Then again I have to say i quite like bittersweet endings which have a happy ending, but at the same time there is a hint of sadness ( like the two main characters get together but one has to move away etc. Clichéd, but it works ( Eg Toradora )

As others have said, it is situational based on the show, but if I had to choose, I'd say happy. Just because I'm always sad anyways when one of my favorite shows comes to an end. It does a little bit of negation.

But that wasn't the questio- OK. Sad endings. I like sad endings.
