When i go to my local con, most of the people look fine. If they wouldn't be there and i saw them anywhere else, i probably couldn't even guess they are anime fans. |

It's not completely wrong either to judge on appearance. You do have a great impact on it by choosing your own clothes, doing hair styles, using skin care products etc. and especially choosing your diet. I think there are three types of anime fans: these, who eat all this crap everyday like fast food, manufactured noodlesoups and tons of (Japanese) sweets and don't even think of doing sports, these, who just eat normal and do sports sometimes and these, who are mainly cosplayers and therefore they are really into sports and eating healthy. I know many just-normal people in the anime community, but there are a few ... not THAT well-groomed people, who look scruffy and / or wear clothes way too big for them etc., and I have never seen so many people at one place with insecure body language like hunched schoulders, gaze at the floor etc., if you are looking closely at some people walking by, I think. I dunno, many cliches do have true elements to them. These are the people, who are seen and smelled before people recognize anything and anyone else. But they aren't the majority and as long as someone doesn't really smell bad or looks absolutely embarrassing or behaves in a creepy-weird way, it's alright. By looks embarassing I mean something like... I met a girl back then, who wore this flashy cosplay-cateye-contact lenses everywhere and casually. One of my best friends is doing Japanese studies at university, soon in the Masters. In first two or three semesters, there were these few people, who attend lectures in cosplays and everything was fun for them and then they were disappointed and left, because there was an academic approach and not a weeb club. They also gave a shit about the real culture and no one would ever employ them to communicate with or for a Japanese embassy or something. ^^" If you are doing this or wearing strange contact lenses on daily basis, you are asking most people around you to avoid you or give you strange looks tbh. Someone just being weird, but well-mannered all in all, won't hurt people, so they don't have the right to put them down and calling them out in school or anywhere else. Avoiding people in your private life you don't like really is enough. And there are some cute shut-in personalities, who just need someone, who speaks to them first. I'm also kinda introverted, but I can approach to people I don't know. I hear you Clarissa are you serious about those classes? how would professors allow students to wear cosplay customs to class? thats disrespectful to me. Ive seen pp being picked out of the classroom right away from wearing pajamas and slippers in an economic class I do agree with you dressing matters but I dont get why pp are being estranged just by wearing sloppily (oversized plain color shirts , decolorized jeans etc) the older pp tend to judge less on the other hand right in the topic most pp who are into anime are more likely to perceive predetermined judgement based on their interests (what anime they like whats their avatar) they are less and less people who are willing to believe anime fans can be normal as well Im saying this based on my experience in different cultures and subcultures as well tho in western society pp dont usually say it out loud or gossip at a corner which I respect (you kinda feel them not enjoying the talks with certain kinds of anime fans but they dont want to be franky or else it would be cringy and embarassing) |

This (for the most part) is possibly one of the most optimistic threads I've seen on MAL. I can't tell if that's sad or not Honestly I assume, just like any community, there's a variety of people, from big, small, neat, scruffy, and every other adjective that could be used to describe someone Having not been here long, nor having seen anyone from here in person (other than the few that have posted photos), can't really say my view here has much weight, but no harm in throwing my Psyduck plushie into the ring (or something like that) |

I can't help but think everyone looks exactly like their avatars 90% of the time on forums, and I tend to think their personalities are reflected in those images, unless I already know what they look like. |

The majority is completely fine, but you don't recognize them in the mass. People see always the negative examples before anything else, but I also don't like how some of them, who actually are "the cliche", are being treated by others. As long as these people behave (and don't creep you or anything... uhm or stink ^^"), they have to be treated normally as well and especially get the chance to fit in a group, if they work on it and want it too. At least almost everyone wants to fit in somewhere, I guess. I see this in similar ways in the LGBT-community too. Some guys write and say things like "as long as a guy isn't the effeminate cliche-fag"... but what IF? I also had this bad attitude and it's really hurting and I recognized it after meeting a great / really kind guy, who is like this. They didn't do anything wrong to others, who just "hate the cliche" or something. Just a few people meet their stereotypes to the fullest anyway. |

-PotatoChip- said: I don't think much about what someone looks like in real life. Although, their online persona can speak more than looks can. Based on their attributes in conversation or overall personality, it can be easy to label someone as "optimistic" or "short tempered," etc. But, it is not a good idea to take someone's online personality to face value! If someone is being ingenuine about their personality on the internet - do not fret. They eventually show their true colors. There is no telling who you're talking to on the other side of the monitor. but havent you ever curiously wonder about it? like whats the true face behind a cute loli, a manly machoman, a tsundere schoolgirl etc I dont like judging pp from their online appearance as well but cant helped to make connections and assumptions with their online behaviors and personal preferences |

everyone is beautiful, except for those with ugly personalities. so far I haven't seen goodlookers with bad personalities, or vice versa. could say I read into looks via the personality I see, which is really easy online. |

MayoiYui said: Im wondering if anyones been curious about what others look like in reality have you been idealizing the imagery of others? Every now and then you can see someone posting their pic on forum. Based on that and users I know IRL (me included), I'd agree with previous answers that people here are normal/good looking. The stereotypical fat otaku is probably pretty rare sight, especially considering that even an overweight person can look not bad if they take good care of themselves. As for idealizing, I'll admit I do it to some extent: I tend to assume users I like are more attractive and those who I don't like or simply consider idiots, are those dirty, smelly basement dwellers. I'm probably wrong most of the time, but whatever. Bambi said: Just because you guys are socially awkward doesn't mean you're ugly. This. Same, I like my glasses. Otherwise I would be completely lost lol. Wearing contacts everyday hurt and is expensive. So I'm wearing them three to five days a month. Just take your time to choose a design that fits your face shape. Also eyes look smaller behind glasses, you can some make up to emphasize them. Knowing how to use make up properly and having a decent and fitting style for your features is literally almost everything in appearance / can change many things. |
