720p. Most 1080p is just upscaling for the ongoing shows.

I am also already okay with 480P, beyond that will be too heavy for my computer. Would take forever to download high quality episode with my average internet speed.

Pretty much. Most shows don't even actually go for true 1080p for the entire time, since it costs a lot of money.

To answer your question: Yes, it definitely does, but it annoys the hell out of me when I see grainy animation on my glorious tv.
I'm also filled with pure-hearted ulterior motives.

It depends on how much I like them.

If it's just a time waster, I'm happy enough with 480p.

720 for normal

1080 for shows I really love.

I'm a noob with computers but: what aspect of the computer determines whether or not your anime will lag? (ex. ram, gpu etc...)

My internet connection is quite slow in loading 720p and beyond.

"240p, we meet again"

Though, I manage to get by with 420p just fine.

Just this once, I'll fulfill whatever your wish is.

I'm fine with 720p for most things, however something like Kara no Kyoukai or Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu are just begging for 1080p.

I have the Haruhi movie at 720p, and the KnK series at 480p.
Now, if only someone would have given me KnK at 720p for Christmas *sob*

I prefer 720p since it doesn't take as much space as 1080p but the quality is more than enough.
I guess 1080p is only needed for real favourites or when you can see a great difference to 720p which most likely won't happen.

I'm fine with watching in 480p, although I do notice a difference between 480, 720 and 1080p simply because I edit using those resolutions a lot.

But if it's something really special, I try to get it in 1080p.

Most anime are upscaled anyways. I think Japanese broadcast is closer to 720p. But I do care about 1080p when it exists. It makes a big different when blown up on my 100" screen.

Like another user said graphics card mainly. Usually when you get the computer the specs are labeled on on the box or even on the computer. Like I have a Sony Vaio and it shows it full Hd 1080p also the types of media player you use and the codecs have a big impact.

Anyways I prefer 720p I use to just stream but sometimes some stream websites rush to post the recent anime so the quality is terrible. The only stream with 720p capable that's free unlike crunchy rol,l is animeftw and that's because that site uses the DivX player. Downloading is better for me.
I wish I was blessed enough to download 1080p at blazing speeds like you spoiled fools...
slow as internet all I can manage is 720p and barely

Almost always 1080p. With multiple blank HDD, storage space is the last thing on my mind. If 1080p isn't available, then 720p.

Ok. My comp doesn't lag anyway, I was just curious for future reference. I just have a normal ass laptop but I guess it must be pretty good to be able to run 1080p with little to no lag.

Yeah unless it's a movie , you won't really find a difference in quality in 1080p on normal anime. The file size is obviously bigger and the detail is slightly enhanced but barely. Movies tend to be the only ones that get the full usage out of 1080p.

But then again, hentai sure has really really low resolution shots of genitals...why's that? Why's the resolution so low that they look almost blocky?

720p is the maximum my monitor can handle and that is not going to change in the upcoming 10 years judging by the way marketing went. I fucking hate those new wide-screen monitors, gonna stick with 5x4.

No it doesn't really bother me either way. 720 is better for what I am running though, so I tend to choose that.

Yeah I struggled with VLC player 3 weeks ago the images were grainy and distorted on most anime I played with it. So I switched to media player classic for a little but I was so use to VLC interface so I got the updated version of VLC which was VLC 2.04.
Look into that one if you don't have it or switch to media player classic.
Also if problems with VLC persist go to Tools>preferences>video and change the output from default to either OpenGL or DirectX this is only if problems are there but the new VLC is good so I doubt you will have problems.

Most of the time I go for 720p since the screen of my laptop fits that size. Plus, 720p has significantly lower file size than 1080p so I can put more on my HDDs. But if it's only 1080p then I guess I have no choice but to choose that.

I consider myself a stickler for quality, but I choose 720p. most HD stuff is 720p source anyhow, just with "professional" upscaling. The upgrade from SD to HD seems noticeable and worth it, but from HD to FULL HD the difference seems minor compared to the file size you trade off.

I really wish sub/encode groups would calm down with the file sizes though, because I've noticed that certain Deadfish encode will have the same "noticeable" AV quality as some bloated 10-bit FLAC stuffed encode that instead of being 1GB is now 10GB

You probably mean 10-bit h264 video (or Hi10p), which at the same quality will yield a smaller file size than 8-bit.

720 because 90% of stuff that comes out on tv in HD is in 720. 1080 is just upscaled unless it's the full blu-ray release. Even then i'll probably just download 720. Looks just as good (it's just anime, not a peter jackson movie) and uses 1/5th the HDD space.

Though the 10-bit part may not apply so much to my size complaint, I'm still not a fan of it. I download UTW when possible and it's just problematic when I give files to others since most others cannot into 10-bit playback, and same goes for when I try to play it on XBMC. I still think they shouldn't bother with Hi10 since H.265 is right around the corner anyhow
