For me, I don't believe that offline friendships or connections are the only way to make friends. I think online is a powerful way to connect with people. I joined because I wanted new online friends. And I had a falling out in other forums, two forums to be exact. I was grumpy at times and it pushed people away. I do admit that they were in the right. But sometimes, I still wish they'd forgive me. Since then, I have (mostly) learned my lesson and I just act a goofball nowadays. |

That was a looooooonng time ago, so I'm not exactly sure anymore. But it was probably more to list whatever I watched than the social aspect. The only other forum I ended up being a regular on was the community hub of a weekly podcast I used to listen to (a forum that has long since been shut down and replaced by a Discord server...) |

My handwriting was atrocious. Had to keep track of my animes somehow. One thing led to another, and here I am a decade later. Still here. Made many friends, enemies, haters and lovers. My forum posting days are highkey over but lowkey just beginning. I thought MAL would be thanos snapped by now..lol BUt alas. Now I just lurk... Boo |

To be honest I have no clue how I found out about MAL back in the day, as it's been over 17 years at this point for me. I don't think there were many anime list websites like this on the internet at that time, though I do recall Anime Planet being a thing back then. I suppose I got a recommendation from another online friend and decided to try it out. |

Anime News Network kinda sucked and I like the review system of MAL. But I mostly find anime-related online discussions in Chinese or Korean than in English these days. |

So in college I had +200 anime finished not counting ovas, movies, or multiple seasons. My paper to record it got full then I made my mal account. The forums were cool with how customizable they were, and they were the definitive chatroom for discussing anime back then. Not destroyed by monetization and sellouts. |

To find some last vestige of meaningful human interaction on the Internet that was lost when Meta, Twitter, and Reddit ate up most communication platforms' userbases. ...I really wish clubs weren't dead and completely pointless here. |

@rohan121 This is similar to my story. When I first got into anime I was recording everything with a notepad text file and was already used to web 2.0 forums for other things (mainly gaming) so it was natural that I'd find MAL. |

I watched Urusei Yatsura after watching Justin Whang's video on it (This one), then realized anime actually is more than just battle shonen slop. Then some Ranma ½, some Yawara, some City Hunter... uh... I don't remember all the other stuff. Then I realized "Oh shit, I remember a YouTuber (I do not remember who) from some time back mentioning this MyAnimeList thing", and created the account here to add keep track of everything. That's about it. If it weren't for that video from Justin Whang, I'd be somewhere else, a restraining orders' distance form all anime. :D |

I thought I'd enjoy Anime stuff the older I get; it turned out it doesn't work like that. But I'll keep my fingers crossed; maybe one day they'll release some Anime that triggers my interest. Can't say the same about Manga, since I am most definitely not going to read anything, and not just Manga (books in general don't impress me). |

My main reasons for joining MAL were to keep track of the anime that I watched, score them, and look through MAL’s database. I didn’t pay any attention to the forums here until 4 years after I made my account. |

For MyAnimeList I don't really remember...? I had a friend on PSN try and encourage me and a few others to make profiles here some years back before I did, but then I was still a little shy about online communications and thought I'd be out of my depth here (still feel that way a little now tbh😬). I'd also kept my own notes on what I watched and just thought it would be easier to just join, so I did. Also I think the Anime communities were starting to dry up on PSN, so I thought it would be more active here. After that I just found that I really liked tracking stuff and in some cases reviewing stuff, so that's why I then joined Cagematch & Goodreads. Although I'd been browsing Catchmatch the longest out of all and I honestly regret not joining sooner as it's gone completely to shit now because of tribalism, and I'm not even a part of that yet I'm still affected when I use it. |

Thank you for all the replies. They're interesting to read, especially the ones about keeping track of anime in a file or paper. I did that for a long time. I still have my multiple anime notebooks lol. Now, I use MAL also but I still also use Google Docs. I like having both. It's also interesting to note that from what I read, most joined for the database aspect compared to the forum aspect. This made me understand the site and the userbase more. |

You are the furthest thing from what i'd call 'grumpy'. Nice to see you making threads for once ^^) The reason i joined is because i like reading episode / chapter discussions. Sometimes they help give me a better understanding on a series. Opinions on mal are at least reasonable.... somewhat. And i feel like im losing my humanity whenever i check facebook / twitter. Mal is my last refuge. Though honestly all i need is a place to keep track of whatever i watched and read. Cause i don't remember most titles unless i have the cover on display. |

@Exhumatika I don't know if it was an image of the most sold games of each year or just the highest rated ones. And sure some of them were difficult but it was part of the experience and it didn't feel like an artificial time waster like in a lot of modern games. But even then I'd sometimes use cheat codes if I could because it's fun to be overpowered :D If I were to list my favorite games ever would be something like Age of Mythology, Battle for Middle Earth II, Battlefield 1942, Battlefield 2, Counter-Strike: Source, Rome: Total War, Zelda OOT/MM, Civilization 4, Pokémon HG/SS and Platinum, World of Warcraft (kind of), and Dragon Age Origins |

If we're talking about this website, then I was also one of those who came here through recommendation for the list. I used to be active in other forums and on other websites before - with MAL ending up as a potential place to keep in contact. Since the other places went offline or I had given them up, I've opted to just stay here for the most part, given that it was meant to be the place where I would login regularly, either way. Yes, you can connect online in a way that might not be as easily possible with in-person relationship, but there is a different form of distance. Unless you get serious mutual interest to see each other, talk to each other with your own voices and even meet up with each other, it feels like some form of make-belief because it means at least either party cannot trust or simply has not enough interest to actually get to know the person on the other side of the screen There is not much you can do about people that cut off communication channels and to be honest, it's a waste of emotions to continue thinking about it Sure, you can "act a goofball" if it makes your life easier, but can you say that any relationship gained that way is genuine and actually connecting with your inner self? |

For MAL I joined so I could categorize my anime all in one place. I've used this site for years, but never bothered making an account. For the longest time I just kept all my anime rated and such on imdb (anime movies on RYM), but wanted something better for cataloging and actually chatting about it in general. I was also one of those who kept paper ratings of all my shows, anime, tv, and games, so it's just nice to have all my anime in one place. Now my first forum? That would be Gamespot in like 2004 and it was to also keep track of all my video games in one place, along with chatting online with people. Back then forums, and especially theirs was a great place to chat on not just games, but anything really. One of the reasons I actually started posting here is that MAL is one of the few sites that still has a bit of that oldschool internet feel left. Other places like Gamefaqs that still do are just way to overmoderated to even enjoy anymore and so sanitized. Sure there's always /a/, but I prefer when spoilers are moderated when chatting about an ongoing show. |

@Noboru I don't know. I had intimate friendships back then. They were there for me when I was having thoughts of self-harm. The convo happened in discord but we forged a bond in the forums we were all in, before we used discord. Just their presence in a tough time helped a lot because the alternative was me thinking of harmful thoughts by myself. And that would have been bad. Looking back, I was lucky they responded right away instead of me being left alone with my own thoughts. There is something unique about MAL, for better or worse. I think, here, the users prioritize the database or lists aspect as opposed to the social connections. I'm not saying there are no users who value the interactions with others. But I'm guessing the userbase leans towards prioritizing the keeping track of anime thing. Maybe it's the reason things are not aligning. I primarily join forums to interact with others. Maybe most users here have social lives. I don't. lmao |

@LabMemberX Okay, then it's something else if they have successfully prevented you from self-harm. For the better or worse, I have never considered it myself and there were comparatively few times I which I've hoped to gain some sympathy and compassion, since I've learnt to keep things to myself. I'll just get more phlegmatic, apathetic, indifferent and jaded instead of relying on others to process my emotions That doesn't seem to be the case for everyone that they would prioritize the list aspect. More like many people do want some social connections, but not necessarily any deep(er) ones There have been some successful pairings after all, so it's definitely possible, but not really the rule I wonder about that, because otherwise, joining in forum games or overly getting invested in conversations here would rather feel like a waste of time. This feels more like a make-belief "safe" place in which one can easily delude themselves that some strangers online would care lots about oneself |

@Noboru I am somewhat perplexed. Maybe society in general doesn't put much importance or value in online connections? I read a little about what others think online and they said they have no trouble finding partners or friends offline. Maybe it's a thing or concept ingrained in the culture. Or all cultures. I also had my psychiatrist tell me he preferred offline friends to meet up with for me in the context of treatment. He looked down on online friendships. But then again, he is from the older generation. |

@LabMemberX Those who have no trouble finding partners or friends offline are usually either very attractive or have managed to keep a good social circle and have good chances to get to know new people with their pastime activities To be fair, offline friends can do more than mere online ones. The act of an actual hug is so much more soothing than simply having someone write "*hugs*" or put some hugging emoji or whatever. The online friendship can also differ in quality, which starts with whether not both sides are mutual interested in the respective other person, whether they would be up to talk via voice or even cam with each other, etc. |

@Noboru You have good points. But I do suspect that maybe one of the obstacles to online friendships is indifference/apathy. Maybe the user is burnt out or just don't care enough. It's a difference in values, I guess. |

@LabMemberX Thanks That's pretty much spot on. Though usually it's me who ends up getting burnt out given how much I'm initially willed to give Sure, but you can increase the quality of online relationships both in content and in the form of communication |

I wanted to truly feel like I was a part of something and be able to meet others that were like minded. Every time I discussed anime and games with people I knew around me (irl), it felt like they looked at me as if I grew a second head. I wasn't able to convert anyone. So to me, the easiest was to find a community that worked. Secondly, having a list to keep track of what I seen and what I want to see, is super helpful! |

I joined MAL because I wanted to track what anime and manga I had seen. Eventually I began posting a bit in the forums, and met a lot of cool people in the process. Earlier forums I participated in were for an MMO I was playing or other communities around gaming, including a Christian one though because I was looking to make some online friends with people who shared my faith. Why do I post on MAL? Because it's fun, I like to share sources/contribute to the database, I like increasing my post count, and I like some of the people here and thinking about what is discussed. |
