lol...I would try Google first.

If you want to know the stats here:

MyAnimeList Statistics
152,195 users have listed 8,813,294 anime and 1,797,642 manga entries

So, umm, at least 150k...?

Does the project specify whether it's strictly Japanese animation or animation in general?

Not many really. I'd have a hard time finding a random person unless I walked into an anime club.

You're doing a project, but we can guess about the statistics? What kind of a project is that? Shouldn't you need something more that conjecture? You're not getting any real answers by asking someone a question and telling him or her they can guess on the answer. Why not research viewing statistics?

Some people watch it, but they don't tell anyone about it because of the stereotypes that go along with watching anime. (me ish guilty of this =P)

Besides, you might walk pass people who watch anime and don't know that they watch anime, after all, it's not like we walk around with shirts that say "I am an Anime fan."

Also, there are ignorant people who thought the anime like Spirited Away, Yugioh, One Piece, etc. that are broadcast in US televisions were made in the US, and so they don't consider themselves watching anime. (I know, stupid, right?)

I would say there are probably some millions. You have to account for all the americans that actually watch anime and know that it is anime. You have to account for the people that watched Dubbed versions that think it is just an american made cartoon. Account for people in the European Countries and of course Japan. There are probably more than people think because like someone on this topic said "Alot of people watch anime but dont tell anyone because of the sterotype that goes with watching Anime." So yeah I would say probably millions.

You're much younger than me. Many people my age or older (like a random one off the street), if they know what the word "anime" means, assume "cartoon porn?!" If you can find a large percentage over the age of 25, I'd be more impressed.

Then I'll be self-referential I guess...it wasn't intended as insult or offensive, just as constructive criticism. What's being asked isn't consistent with the intended goal, and this might be a better way of going about it. That's all it is--for cereal. ^_^

Does DMC count as black metal? If so, then 6,500 on MAL alone.

How long is a piece of string?

Stupid question really. It's impossible to answer with any real figures unless you want to focus specifically on Japanese broadcast viewership or similar where you can get ratings numbers from the networks. Japan alone has over twenty million viewers (counting Sazae-san) and there's large viewerbases in China, Korea and other parts of Asia that I've never seen any real stats on, but given China's population if only 1% of them watch anime, that's another 14 million viewers. Looking at all of Asia it wouldn't be overshooting to guestimate ~50 million people.

But then you have to define what you mean by 'watch'. People who have seen an episode of any anime? People who sporadically follow series on TV? Or those who actually buy the DVDs? Where's the line drawn.

Your project is stupid and if it's for schooling (which I assume) then your teacher should fail you with extreme prejudice.

"watch anime" as in japanese (and many western ones since DBZ and Pokemon) children who just happen to watch some shows in the weekends or "watch anime" as in hardcore otakus?
Combined, it would probably be a very large portion of Japan, Asia, USA and Europe. If we're just talking about medium to hardcore otakus, it would be a lot less.
