| It is time to resolve the debate. Asuka or Rei? Misato or Ritsuko? Yui or Naoko (Ritsuko's mother)? Who shall be victorious in this battle of complex femininity? Just so we are all clear, I picked Asuka. She to me is the most influental female character in the series. Rei is no match for this fiery red-head. |

Misato and Asuka are both amazing characters, and fantastic female characters. Rei and Ritsuko and both very complex, too, but I think Misato and Asuka just about outdo them. Gah, too hard :/ |

| I'm currently re-watching the series, and I'm realising how much I like Rei. She's awesome, with a really striking design. She has a lot of presence too, despite the fact she's mostly silent. | Mai has the strong silent presence down. It`s actually a rather unrealistic character setting though. In the case of Rei her cold objective oriented personality doesn`t really have this effect to the same extent (in my opinion). In fact, she practically vanishes in the later episodes of the series, after the other characters seem to get the gist of her attitude they stop drawing attention to her. Though she starts to shift her objectives later as well (or her clones) to illustrate the willingness to express her emotions. Overall, at the end of the day, Rei doesn`t really have that strong of a presence. (Shinji actually has even less of a presence through his attempts to hide from life, but due to being a protagonist he`s drawn to the center of attention. As with all stories.) |

| I voted for Misato strictly because some of my favorite episodes of the series were the ones involving personal growth and flashbacks of Misato. Though Asuka comes in a very close second because of her character and everything that happens to her throughout the series. |

| There's no debate possible imo, do you prefer your mother or your lover? That's Shinji's debate, chosing between Rei (clone of his mother) and Asuka (destined girlfriend). As a viewer, you can prefer any female character you'd like though ! I used to prefer Rei when I was 15/16 but now I obviously prefer Misato and Asuka. |
