I find this incredibly depressing... Kon was one of the most influential directors in recent years and I think everybody owes it to themselves to go watch more of his works. It's hard to imagine no more works like Perfect Blue, Paranoia Agent, Millenium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, Paprika.... everything he did was top quality.

I am a banana.

I really am starting to believe that 2012 is the end of the world. God taking away all the awesome people of the earth to spare them the horrors of the apocalypse seems to be the only explanation for all this madness.

I wish it hadn't been so sudden. Sad news. Millennium Actress was one of my favorite movies. Just went and finally watched Perfect Blue. Staggeringly good, deliciously surreal. Great, great director.

Sad news, indeedf.

I know I'll feel sad when the day comes that Miyazaki passes away, but it'll be okay in a way because at least he lived a full life, right?

But Kon was so young and had so much more left to give. One of animation's few auteurs. What a shame to see him leave us so suddenly. I hadn't heard any bad news about his health before this.

This post might come across as selfish and insensitively entitled (as if he lived just to please us with his films) but I don't want to change a word of it.

I've watched his movies (Perfect Blue, Millenium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers and Paprika) long before I became an anime fan. I've got to know his name and love his works and respect him as a film maker and not just as an anime creator.

His death now at such a young age, (knowing that if he had lived on, he would have given us so much more) is a huge blow against the whole movies industry and not just the anime one. Because not just in the anime genre but in the whole movies industry, he was one of the few remaining artists at a time when movie making has degraded to adapting Proven Source Materials for sure moneymakers.

However I guess everyone dies in the end and all that remains is the work of their life. So I can't be too sad when I consider that with the films that he left us with, he will never be forgotten and always loved and respected.

RIP Satoshi Kon.

"Satoshi Kon's death of pancreatic cancer was reported on August 24, 2010. His death came less than two months before his 47th birthday."

Very sad >__< A real loss for the anime fans and for Madhouse too.

The fact that this genius' time is up after having only released 6 works proper is practically criminal. It's such a tragedy... looks like I'll have to hurry up and go get Perfect Blue and Tokyo Godfathers now.

Also, I wonder what's going to happen to The Dream Machine now? Depending on how much progress Kon has left behind, it would be a fantastic tribute to him were another director to finish it in his stead.

Cut down in the prime of his artistic career... and its not like Anime direction can afford the loss either. This is most unfortunate.
I pulled into Nazareth, was feeling 'bout half passed dead.
I just needed to find a place, where I can lay my head.
"Hey mister, can you tell me, where a man might find a bed?"
He just grinned, shook my hand, and "No" was all he said.

ANN has a copy of a message titled 'Farewell' that was posted on Kon's official website. In it, Satoshi talks about the day (May 18th) he was told that his cancer was terminal and had spread to his bones. He was also told by doctors that at most, he only had half a year left.

Kon also spoke about meeting with MADHOUSE founder Masao Maruyama about the final anime film he was directing, and said:

When I conveyed my concerns for Yume-Miru Kikai to Mr. Maruyama, he said, "It's fine. Don't worry, we'll do whatever it takes."

I cried.

I cried aloud.

Suffice to say, they will ensure that his final film is completed.

Kon ended his message with:

With feelings of gratitude for all that is good in this world, I put down my pen.

Well, I'll be leaving now.

Satoshi Kon

I wanted to cry buckets over this last part...

What a legend. That last message of his makes me very sad, knowing how he bravely accepted his death. Being told you have only 6 months to live- can't even begin to imagine the shock...

I've only seen two of Satoshi Kon's films, Millenium Actress and Tokyo Godfathers, but they were two of the deepest films I've ever seen.

RIP Satoshi Kon.
