I just don't find the ending believable, If Light knew that they were go to be changing the page why did he not just have Mikami test the page before he used it. He was always cautious up to the showdown, Its just not like him to overlook such an obvious detail.

I'm no genius and i would have figured that out.

Light knew they were gonna change the fake notebook, not the real one. For what he knew, the real Death Note had been locked in a safe vault and Near never suspected about it. Light didn't know Mikami had acted on his own and broken is precious routine to kill Takada. If Mikami hadn't gone to the bank that day, Near would have never discovered that the one Mikami carried with him was fake neither he would have found out where the real one was. So yeah, in the end, Light lost. But because of somebody else's mistakes not his.

Just done re-watching x3.

I still hate that ending. Why? Light just... lost all his personality, and become to a coward and... god, that sux D:.
I can't help, i cried a little when he died, but oh well, it was his time D:
Damn you Mikami D:!

I got some free store credit and bought both seasons on DVD to rewatch.

If Light hadn't died, the second season would have been ABSOLUTELY pointless. If Light is going to win, it should be against an incredible adversary like L. When L dies, half the fans are heartbroken, with the other half rooting for Light.

Like people pointed out...it wasn't Near that beat Light. It was Light AND Mello. Light also helped his own demise through huburis. He NEVER underestimated L, but he sorely did so against Mello.

You guys also have to understand that Light didn't screw up, Mikami did. Light was smarter than L, and smarter than Mello and Near combined, but under heavy restrictions he had to lay low and be cautious. Mikami was pretty brilliant himself but made a small oversight.

I think seeing Light acting cowardly was amazing. The guy's not a god, he's a human. He spent years getting away with murder. When you look at it, he's single handedly the most brutal terrorrist the world had ever come to fear. I honestly think beyond the obvious reasons of losing, he didn't want to be humiliated by the world knowing he was Kira. Light hates to be embarrassed.

Light wasn't a god, he was a man, it's pretty shocking to just lose like that, especially when it wasn't from his own mistake. Mikami didn't commit suicide to try and buy Light time, he killed himself because he saw Light cower in fear, and a god would never do such a thing, basically destroying everything he believed in and breaking him as a human

Ryuuk had no feelings or attachment to Light. He was bored and Light was a lot of fun for him, but that's it, in the end he was just a toy to him

This anime was SO amazing. It's one of my few 10's. I understand people hate the series after L dies, but so much about this anime is so unique and well executed that it's too hard to overlook this and not say it's a masterpiece.

A lot of books, movies and tv shows just aren't very original anymore. It's mainly because pretty much every story has been told already, but the writers and creators of Death Note really put a new twist on story telling

after L's death, the show spiraled so quickly downwards, it became a pain to watch.

Near/Mello were just awful and annoying. Nothing likable in their personalities. L was different because not only was he smart/shrewd/clever, you wanted him to win in a way.

The end with Masuka or whatever that pussy cop being the one to deal the "killing blows" to Light was just laughable. Truly a poor way to end a great series.

I would've honestly been happy with it ending at L's death.

9/10 regardless, since it was so well crafted and put together in the first half.

When they turned around and Mikami was spewing blood was IMO funniest part in the series. I had to pause it I was laughing so hard.

I liked the part where L was watching Light die in the end. That was pretty epic.

sad it got a bad ending. :( sad misa has to die.

honestly, i am at lighto side. but also , i dont like him. -.- he is too cold blooded.
if it was lelouch in the place... lelouch would win>.<. but he wouldn t like to forge the wolrd by fear.

lighto somehow failed to be a good person, looking his aly's as pawn. if takada was in trouble. he killed her.

while look at lelouch , kallen in trouble. he did everything to save her

well even without L, this ending was still quite good. ( Pass at least)
i almost cried at the end thinking about misa.... she gave everything to light, and now she has nothing and very little time left to live.

up until L died, this was the most amazing if not the best anime i have ever watched.

pity they made this mistake........ still...... i can easily see me rewatching this.

also light had to die

I'm so sick and tired of people saying the show got worse "because L died." Fact is the show was declining before he died, with Light coming over to the "good" side. That was unneeded and, for all intents and purposes, only served to artificially lengthen the the story. I actually think that L died helped the show, as it made the viewer (me) hate Light and, subsequently, relish in his downfall.

Except, I didn't relish it after all. I kind of felt sorry for him in the end.

"Justice will prevail!" was what Light thought... Well apparently not. At least not Kira's 'justice'.

I agree Near just couldn't replace L, but I'm glad he won. Though actually I kind of expected he would win, or at least that Light wouldn't. Light realised it was over for him and he totally freaked out. Felt kinda sorry for him (and Misa) in the end ;_;

Though I don't really like the reason why Near won. He was actually just lucky to find out there was a fake notebook. If Mikami would have obeyed Light, Light would have one. Or maybe the creators just want to say something like "humans can't be used as pawns"...

Anywayz, no more Death Note. Gonna have to get used to that.

This show was dragged on too long. I'm glad it ended. Also Light had a twisted sense of justice, only protecting himself, so I didn't feel sorry for him when he died.

"Near; it's my win." LOL what a fail. Am I wrong or is that one of the stupidest things you can say at that time? It's sad that you blew your cover JUST LIKE THAT and went through all this trouble to keep your identity secure. Besides your intelligent plans and shit, you really are an idiot.

Why should I even feel sorry for the guy? He killed thousands of people and I should feel sorry for his death? What a joke. He's been doing it over and over with no remorse, his sister is traumatized, his dad is dead, he killed L along with a billion non criminals, he thought it was his right to pass judgement on people.... and I'm supposed to feel bad? The guys a loony.

Long live justice.

Justice DID prevail, Light!! Near brought you down. Who cares if you weren't close to L's intelligence! You brought justice to someone obsessed with the deathnote. Ryuk had his fun, you had your share and your friends who had strong connection to you followed you to nothingness.

It was ok but, well, it was the only episode that logic just flew off the window. The whole thing with the forged notebook, with the silly actions of Mikami... it just felt like "We don't know how to make Light lose, but he will. Why? BECAUSE!!!" Yeah, an expected ending from the first episode nontheless.

Also... if Misa did fall off that building in her suicide attempt... and because it was your fault and yours alone she ended up like that... Light, I swear I will find your grave, dig you up and find the nastiest thing possible to do with whatever is left of your corpse. I swear to (Death) God (all of them).

Finished it. I cried, surprisingly, over Light's death. He was really stupid in the end. It was cool though how he saw L standing there. The music was nice...melancholy. Seeing Misa stand near the ledge of that building made me think she might kill herself. (0 x 0) maybe that's just me being weird. Anyways it was really interesting. I just having to get the rest of the manga.

And so it ends... like one said, it should’ve end when L died (never really liked near or mello, since Light Vs L battles were far more exciting and fun to watch, plus I find L’s character far more interesting than those two). Also, I can’t believe that mikami didn’t realize that both note books were fakes (since he’s the type to be cautious about the smallest detail) and the fact that the other agent copied the note book, in one night flawlessly, seriously… Well, Death Note was really fun and enjoyable to watch with lots of twists. If I had to choose on the best parts it would be all the mind games between L and Light. As for the ending, in my opinion, the end was better in the manga since it shows more than the anime, on how Light Yagami really is.

I haven't read the manga yet, and I plan on doing so.

Replicating the notebook so perfectly (in one day and when Mikami would check it through a microscope [though I think he stopped doing that at that point]) is such bs.
Despite all the times I have despised Lightl, I was hoping he would have won.
And Ryuk, why? :(
The "why?" for Ryuk goes for a few things. Did he really feel no attachment to Light? Why didn't he help Light out in the end by killing everyone? It would have killed him, but Ryuk is just going to end up bored again and I doubt there's going to be anyone who can entertain his as much as Light could.
This was all Mikami's fault. Stabbing himself as a distraction was the least he could do.
Poor Misa, too. She lost memory of what was truly going on and I take it she was going to kill herself at the end.
I wonder how this all would have played out if Light just did the eye deal. It's hard to say with the sketchy lifespan aspect considering it can be altered so easily with the existence of the death note and it's been proven to not be some "everything is predetermined" crap.

Hmmm.
The entire series has been one question for me. Perhaps I've come up with an answer, but I still find myself disatisfied. Maybe its because they didn't give me the happy ending that I wished for.
Before I state and attempt to answer the question, I must say this:
It has been 3 hours since I watched the last episode and I am sick to my stomach. In all truth, during the time that I have followed the anime series I have continuously felt sick.
And of course brimming and overflowing with tears.
It's probably due to my strong sense of empathy because, through all the time I've watched Death Note, I have felt the pain and guilt that Light should have experienced. Its probably impractical to feel that way for a anime character, but in a way, I felt for Light as I would another human. (I know I'm abnormal, I do that for everything I read or watch if it is relate-able and plausable.)
Now for the question. What is Light? Is he good or bad?
So the correct answer would be that he is bad, he is a villain. The fanatics answer would be that he is a misunderstood and misled good guy. I disagree with both of these to a certain extent. (Bear with me, in my explanation I may sound as if I'm contradicting myself.)
MY answer is that Light is a villain, but he is in no way evil.
Now let me explain.
I believe that true evil is in intent, not result of action (if you understand what that means). I think that Light truely believed that by "becoming god" (I'm Catholic, so I think it blasphemous to believe something like that could happen =P) he would save the world from violence and hatred. Of course he was mistaken, but HIS INTENTIONS WERE PURE, if a little twisted. But, he is a villain because he was a serial killer.
What I have taken from this series is:
We cannot judge others; the INTENTIONS of a human marks them [good or bad].
Light made the mistake of deeming himself worthy of judging, so he killed, and he was chased down and killed because L and friends judged him to be evil.
Humans cannot ever possibly judge and condemn others as long as we ourselves are imperfect.

Yeah, so that was all I wanted to say.......I feel better now that I've written about it (writing is my therapy).
By the way, can someone tell me if the manga has a happier ending.

I hated it! I wish that light wouldn't die, that he would be the one gaining victory! Yes, he was selfish and acted really insanely, but he was so.. awesome :( I wish that L would have lasted till the end and maybe become an ally with Light... also I feel sorry for Light and L ( L was the one writing down his name in the note book right?) since they'll neither be in hell, nor heaven, just... emptyness, God that is so horrible! and it was so sad, I cried this episode.. really not the way I wanted it to end! >:'(

I totally hate the ending, precisely, the part about giovanni replacing the real notebook.
How come Giovanni could forge the entire notebook in just one day ? Mikami seemed a logical and intelligent character, strictly listening to "God's" orders and he acted on his own when his was told not to do anything ? And also, the SPK didn't know it was possible to make judgements with pieces of death note. Why didn't Light tell Mikami to have a special seperate page of dn hidden somewhere in his clothes, just in case the real notebook was discovered ? Light and Mikami suddenly turned into total fools ? I just don't buy it, it's plain naive. It totally ruined the outcome. I understand the manga/anime developers wanted Near to win at the end, which seems logical, but they could have made a much more credible plot. Shame on you !

I had the exact same thought, it was actually very easy to manipulate the Death Note and it's pages, but why didn't Light take it as a precaution, and he should have also foreseen the possiblity of Mikami doing something out of habit(no matter how punctual one is, chances are there are times when they would also fail to continue their pattern), he should have treated Near as smarter than him, (even though otherwise is true), but our opinions differ here, considering this is Anime,i would say the plot was still excellent(the entire Death Note series, although i was also dissatisfied by the ending), if we just take all possibilities into consideration, it would be a boring Anime i tell you

His INTENTIONS was to create an utopia out of fear in which he was god. That's evil.
We were inside Light's head during the entire series, so it is completely justified when we say he is evil.
Just because a human is imperfect doesn't take away their right to point out flaws in others. If we are not able to accept criticism then we are not able to grow as human beings.
Actions matter as much as intention. Sacrificing human lives to create a "better" world is not acceptable under any circumstances.
I'll also point out that his actions undermined one of the keystones in modern society: A fair legal system.

For some reason I could neither love nor hate this ending. I felt like it was rightly due but I also wanted to see him win. I wish there would be an OVA made of him winning but that is highly unlikely. I managed to watch all 37 episodes in 2 and a half days. This show was a rollercoaster of emotions and I thoroughly enjoyed it. My only concern was I did not think N lived up to Ls reputation and think that L should have survived. Though it was still a great watch and I give it a 9/10

- Who was the person that walked past Light when he was running away? He looked exactly the same as Light. And Light also looked at him.

Walked past Light? As in when he died? it was L; if you meant when he died on staircase. No clue otherwise.

Ryuk, used his own deathnote, in the beginning ryuk said that he would write Light yagami's name in his death note.

And Yes Light really did die by cardiac arrest on the stairway( In Middle to show that he can't go neither to heaven or hell

No I didn't mean when he died. You know, when he's running with his arm bleeding, and he has those flashbacks. There walks someone past him and he looks EXACTLY the same as light. He even has the same school uniform. He looks like light did in the beginning of the series.

But it's not like it's a parallel world kind of thing because the Light with the bleeding arm sees him. they showed the eye movement of Light seeing that person in a close up.

That definately wasn't L....or am I just that blind.

And I still don't get how Ryuk could use his own death note...?? I Mean there Near had two. I know one was a fake that someone duplicated from the real one, but from who was the second one??????? Because I don't get that.

What I'd like to see in this ending arc is a more in depth debate between Near and Light on society. Furthermore, a hot pursuit filled with a blast of psychological twists would definitely add more impression on the ending, making it more memorable. Overall pretty well executed show! Definitely worth re-watching!

Time is what is Time. And so time has come for this anime to leave up to it's own end. I can't believe it's over. The truth is, that the actually warm part of the story ended with L's death. After this point, the atmosphere in these series turned into cold autumn's wind and the sky became totally gray. The warm feeling was lost with L's death and nothing could return them in their place. Truth to be told, the second part was probably even better. I liked Mello more than L(I didn't like Near for a single moment though). It's just that Mello was part of the cold feeling in the ending episodes. Not bad feeling. Just cold. Like it was predicting the ending, but you get to know of that after the very end. Even if I hated Kira, the ending was really sad and melancholic to me, I can't help it. And the sudden view on L... it made the things melancholic beyond control...

1. Characters. +1. Are you mad? There are too few animes at all, that have so strong characters like L and Mello. Light was strong character too, but I didn't like him for even a moment, to be honest. L is unique, one of-a-kind character, and I'm sure there will never be anyone like him. I can say nothing less for Mello. Starting like a naughty brat but later showing himself as strong anti-hero, he won me as my favorite character from this show. He corresponded very well at the dark ending-episodes. He was who held me on the series to the very end.
2. Atmosphere. +1. This anime had great atmosphere at the very beginning, and it wasn't lost until the end. Episode 25 had a great atmosphere, and the following ones with most importantly - the ending held up the best bits of this anime's atmosphere.
3. OST. +1. Only few anime has so good OST. There's almost no tone or track from it that I don't like. The first OP and ED and the first OP are one of my favorites.
4. Animation. +1. I've witnessed better animated shows, but the art that has been put here is OK. After all, I'm sure that L wouldn't look so good in any other kind of animation-design.
5. Background story. There's not too much background story at all, even if I want to give every point possible to this anime =\ .
6. Storyline. +1. Too good of a storyline. No flaws at all, it's perfectly fine with me.
7. Ending. +1. One of the most emotional endings I've seen. Even though I hate Light, this ending made me too melancholic. And the sudden and short view on L...
8. Fight scenes. +1. I can hardly say there were any kind of fights, but I can say that L's battle with Kira and later on - Near&Mello's battles - were so well-made that they easily win one more point for this anime.
9. Drama. +1. The drama in this anime was strong, especially at times. It's definitely deserving to be remembered.
10. Overall feeling. +1. At the start I was thinking "Time has finally come to see once and for all this overhyped anime". After I watched it, I think that the hypes are not accurate and in the same time - this anime is actually beyond them anyway. I felt well about watching it since episode 2 and most of the time after that I was feeling too good about it. Now I really can't believe it's over. And the feeling that accompanies my parting with this anime... it's too melancholic...
Bonus(extra) point for:... +1. Mello. He is definitely one of the coolest character's I've ever seen. Yes, L is great too. But Mello somehow managed to become my favorite although he got the least attention in the anime. He is one of the few characters, that become my favorites with just few episodes of appearance.

Overall score: 10/10.

Well, when I started to watch this anime, and watched first 10 episodes, it was amazing, 10 without any doubts, but later it wasn't so interesting. Well, last episode was exactly what I expected (and I thought that this anime is unpredictable...), I predicted that Light was going to die, but still wished to be wrong, but nah, thats cold blooded truth. What can I say about whole show, well, I didn't liked new characters implented, offcourse, some were neccesary, but some like Near and Mello, was complete mistake of creators, I would liked it better, if L would have stayed alive, and finished this case, not some kind of girlish-boy, and chocalate eating maniac that dresses extremely weird. Well, I went away from the topic.

In summary: A lot of new characters was completely unnecessary, and end of the anime is very predictable.

Overall score: 7.5/10 (Sorry guys.).

This show started off so great, but then I started to loose the interest due to several jibberish-scenes as the episodes went on.
Sad that L died, but had it coming, rather obvious.
As for the ending episodes, mainly 37 ofc, must have been the most dissapointing(or whatever) in the entire series.
As the every "encounter" up to this point were well planned in every way, the revealing of Kira is just bullshit. No phsycologica babble, no smart ass comments, nothing.
Anyway, enough bein' a pessimist. What exactly happened to Misa? did she go high up into a tower,go to the edge just to mourn? If so, how could she know what was happening, would really love some explanation on that one.
weak 8/10 for the show.
