I'm liking this anime, let's see the develop of this first part of the Monogatari Series.:D

Wow, Araragi weighing 100kg lol. Senjogahara's fanservice was perfect.

The episode turned dramatic in the 2nd half.

Senjogahara's past is sad. The heavy stone crab is weird and Araragi gain weight lol.

This episode was pretty gratuitous with fanservice, which I don't really care about either way, but since it tries to be artsy at the same time I guess it gets an easy pass. Based on the character, it might have been symbolic. Since her traumatic event involved someone attempting to molest her body, her feelings or shyness in regard to her body might have been part of the things taken away from her by the crab god. I'll have to wait and see if she is just as shameless after this episode's resolution. In that case, this fanservice would be plain gratuitous after all, lol.

She finally accept her past and get her feeling back. So that's why she was so cold before. When she goes 180 it's her real personality.

So I presume, the weight of Senjougahara is added to Araragi.

I still have absolutely no idea what is going on, but I'm enjoying whatever this is. Araragi is a great protagonist. And I knew the timeline for Monogatari is fucked, but it is already referencing events from the past that will likely come up in the future? This is so confusing.

Ahhh, the infamous head tilt.

Really enjoyed this episode. It was a nice introduction to Waifugahara's backstory and the source of her insecurities and hostility. In the first episode she lashes out at Araragi (mayne, even though I speak Japanese now I still have a hard time saying that name for some reason lol), but in this episode she's able to express them in a more constructive manner.

She's just like the crab: has a hard exterior and wields pincers. In this episode, you get to see what's under the shell. But she's not the crabs in the bucket type.

That one piano piece apparently called "素敵滅法" is sooo good!~ The OP and ED too!

&++ her smile at the end...

* Well, this was an episode. Think it should be divided into two parts.
* Part 1- alot of , let's say fun and "exciting" fan service throughout coupled with an abundance of exchanges between her and araragi, that provided some insight into her characterization and referenced somethings in a previous conversation of the last episode, regarding the moon and its shapes on it. Apparently Araragi, has a thing for cosmology. What's interesting is that inspite of being fully dialogue, i was fully into and never got bored, such that scene went by quite quickly despite being 10 minutes. Also, the fan service alot of effort was put into the framing and animating. Really liked the banter between senjogohara and araragi once again.
* Part 2- Well, this was darker than i expected. Hitagi backstory was unexpected and added alot of depth to her character anf ailment. Was expecting a slightly more intense confrontation with the crab, but what i got instead was a direction that focused on the weighty emotional aspect which is apt considering that its called the emotion god. Was kinda disappointed that there wasn't more intense confrontation, but emotional and psychological depth of senjogohara made up for most of my disappointment. And it was probably the better direction to head towards as it helped to develop senjogohara character really well within the span of 2 episodes.
Well, overall hitagi crab was a good introduction into what to expect from the series and what its about lets see where we can go from here. And hopefully we get more interactions with senjogohara and araragi.

I kept hearing about this anime and kept pushing it off to later, because I thought the fanservice would piss me off too much. But man, that was darker and deeper than I expected OO

If you look pass the fancy visuals and supernatural elements, it's the story of a girl whose mother arranged to have her raped, and who as a result went completely dead inside in order to avoid dealing with the horror that she experienced. Damn.

Plus the anime doesn't beat you over the head with it, just lets you take it in. That was unexpectedly good, I might have been too quick to judge on this one xD

Many great ecchi moments in this ep. Two of them that catched the eyes:

1.

2.

Great moments of ecchi. The details and animation was great too. Funny to see Araragi be so embarrassed about seeing her naked and their talk about his virginity. I found this ep. good. Looks like she had a sad and traumatic childhood/past. By the end, it looks like they got rid of the crab and from the preview it looks like she regained her weight. Great ep.

A new loli character is going to be introduced next time. This looks good.

I love the sister's banter introductions to the next episode. It reminds me a lot of Higurashi episode introductions. There's just something to having some comedic banter after an episode that I love.

Great episode, Senjougahara finally accepted the "weight" of what happened back then to her mother, losing that weight made her emotionless, so now that she got it back, she'll be livelier now I assume.

I hope we get to see Tsubasa's problem too later on. I can definitely see now why bunny girl senpai is being compared to this show, but it's not exactly the same. Either way, both is great.

Looks like I got this old version that has the unfocused or blurry look to it. And it’s on Crunchyroll? Wtf? I mean it’s giving these weird hazy kind of vibes which kind of fit but still if I look too close my eyes hurt lol

Damn. What an anime so far. Definitely not the thing you’d recommend to a newcomer to anime. I’m still asking myself: what is this??! And I can answer that right now; it’s shaping up to be the makings of a masterpiece. I hope

Edit: oh and the op and ed? Freaking love that shit

That was A LOT of fanservice in the first half.

Wow, it actually got into pretty serious territory. It's not often we see any mention of rape in anime. Damn, that is one horrible mother. To let your own daughter be raped. Thankfully, not successfully.

Hope to see more of Hitagi. Honestly, her sharp words are hilarious lol

This show really has a very unique art style.

Also, Araragi's sisters are pretty cute. I guess they're the ones who narrate the preview?

This really felt like a magical episode and a mysterious one

Hitagi naked that's like a once in a lifetime opportunity Araragi is lucky to even had a glance there

What a wondrous episode the weight has been lifted added to Hitagi but Araragi got heavier instead of tough break, Okay this might be a new problem at hand next episode.

the beginning was... let's say a little lewd

it was really cute to see araragi-kun shy and embarrassed

the unfolding of the story is something more "can't describe just see",

the girl's story was something dark

and the crab....is the most "what?" "like this?" "what the hell is that"

and the ending was funny with araragi-kun's sisters waking him up

and he weighing more

it was a good episode

and the opening is good, i liked it

I voiced my reservations about this show in the last forum. And yet, this episode was just baffling, in a really good way.

I'm currently watching this show solely to understand its high popularity and ranking status on MAL. I read that the show has themes of action, horror, mystery, psychology, and the paranormal. So, you can imagine what I was setting myself up to watch. And yet... half of this episode. Like, HALF of this episode, was just -- dialogue. Just, trivial conversation. And I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was tastefully strange. This dude chilling at a practical stranger's house -- she's just naked and roasting tf out of him. The conversation lasted so long that the show seemed to feel the need to pan around the room from every conceivable angle -- under, over, etc. It was so nonsensical, and I was all for it.

Halfway through Episode 1, I was unenthused. And by the climax of Episode 2, I was quite engaged. I was caught off guard by the heavier topic of rape and parental neglect, but it really justified the chick's "bitchy" behavior.

At this point, I'm loving all the characters. But strange how there are pretty much no background characters. It's just this empty world of patterns, the only form of life being the main characters. Like a dream.

Again, I was expecting something so much different from this series -- but that long ass conversation really set the tone for the rest of the series, and I'm just so surprised that an anime can be so bold. You have to be really confident in your story's humor to pull such a stunt, but their confidence was warranted.

Wikipedia was right, a majority of the show (so far) really does seem to focus on conversations between characters.

(I may seem like I'm jumping the gun, but I've actually just finished Episode 3, and am returning to leave some thoughts on the Episode 2 forum.)

awesome episode, outstanding animation, great ost, awesome story all like last episode (*^▽^*)

it seems that senjougahara's weight was passed on to araragi (she said she was supposed to weigh 45kg right?)

and the wordplay with "omoi", which can mean either "weight" or "feelings" is interesting so i guess it's as if araragi is carrying senjougahara's weight and feelings. love the subtlety of that, very interesting

And the fact that she had to put back on her literal "weight" fact a little bittersweet in the end.

The overall style is quite unique, and the dark theme well suited to the depth of the emotional issues that are being revealed. Hitagi's comment about being difficult to wear clothes struck me. By proportion to her weight it would be like me wearing 50lbs of clothing. So naturally she would prefer to be without clothing. And I don't mind, either. That Koyomi is so bothered by her state shows his inexperience. Interesting play on his discomfort in by lack of clothing in psychological sense vs her physical discomfort in wearing clothes. I seems that this series has a few examples of this kind of word play already. I'm sure it's even stronger connection for those who speak Japanese. Kinda makes me wish I could.

As an aside I'm just glad that the creators didn't give Koyomi a nose bleed upon seeing naked Hitagi. I've had enough of that silly trope.

It seems that the ritual was successful since Hitagi regained her memories and apparently he weight back as well. At least that's what one of the episode summaries indicated but it wasn't quite clear to me that she regained her weight. I'll have to go back a watch the scene where she stands up again. Obviously Araragi found that he gained weight when he awoke the next day. Maybe they both gained the weight as a result of this shared experience. When the crab disappears perhaps that's when her weight comes back with the acceptance.

Hitagi's smile at the end is wonderful. I didn't expect to see it this soon. Or at all- based on her demeanor in the first episode.

Any confusion one had from Ep 1 should definitely be cleared with Ep 2 with more context from Hitagi's backstory. A pretty heavy backstory involving attempted rape and luckily delivered in the appropriate tone, much better than the gratuitous way some other anime portray it. I only wish we had seen her perspective as things were playing out but we do know how she coped with that and her mother's fall so it's all fine.

I was also a bit confused why she would suddenly change her demeanor and be friends with Araragi but given her isolation thus far and return of her memories, it makes more sense.

I was aware there would be several arcs revolving around different girls but this turned out to be shorter than I expected.

It’s been many years (like 2014?) since I watched this but it is a bit scary to see how much detail I remember.

Looks like Araragi is going to be carrying another person’s weight now that Senjougahara’s case is resolved. Her tone became a bit warmer but I know how she likes to tease Araragi.

Also learned from a commenter on animelon that the ヶ in 戦場ヶ原 is like the の particle. For example 8ヶ月 is period of 8 months.
Notice: I read most manga in Japanese now so I'm not sure where you can read in English. Sorry in advance.
