| Greetings, Humans. We are creatures from a distant planet. We come in peace. We have tentacles. Anyway, we desire to gain a better understanding of human culture in general, and anime in particular. So, we have taken possession of this individual in order to communicate with others of the same species. That means you. What we are interested in at the moment is this very common gesture in anime, as a rection of surprise, esp. when a character says or does something unexpected:  You see it all over the place:  These are more or less recent, but you can find it easily in 2000s series, and probably earlier:  So, where does it come from? Do Japanese people actually do that IRL? It reminds us a bit of punchline reactions in comic strips, like the silent stare to the camera in Peanuts or the Plop jump in Condorito, but we don't remember seeing it in 4-koma strips. Nor have we found it in what little we've seen of manzai comedy. Any ideas? That's all, Humans. Thanks in advance. No, wait, there was something else.
