Do you like when adaptations try and expand on elements from the source material, even if it ends up getting contradicted later
So recently I have been on a bit of a Persona 4 kick as I have been replaying the game (while experiencing Golden for the first time as I had preivously only played the PS2 version) and the spinoffs in anticipation for the upcoming remake to find what things I may want to see iterated upon, expanded, or referenced in the new game. While doing that I noticed something rather interesting in the anime adaptation Persona 4 the Animation where the anime staff decided to expand on a few elements from the source material, before future Atlus games with the P4 cast tackled the same ideas, sometimes in completely different ways. An example of this that I noticed when looking through some anime material was the depiction of Kanamin, an up and coming idol only mentioned but never depicted on screen in the original P4 as a plot element of Rise's social link. Due to her importance for Rise's story, the anime decided to give her a design, but when Atlus ended up depicting her in Dancing All Night, they ended up going with a completely different look, which I found very interesting since I had no idea an earlier iteration of her even existed until now.  This got me to think about more shows that decided to expand on elements from their source that ultimately got superseded by the original creators expanding on the same idea in a different way. While some obvious examples come to mind like with Dragon Ball filler coming up with different lore for the Dragon Balls and Hell than what Toriyama ended up depicting, I was wondering if there were any more examples of things like this in anime, where the creator and the show expand on the same ideas differently. Have any of you seen stuff like this happen in any of your favorites? |

| please, I didn't want to get angry today talking again about chainsaw man. I hate everything about the adaptation and how it changes things alienating the hardcore manga fan and the worst thing is like in your persona example, fujimoto now tackles the same shit in regards to devil powers that didn't exist in p1 but was explained partly in the anime because the director is an idiot and a fuckass who decided to add a fan theory in a canon adaptation. Thing is, devils don't get stronger if they are more feared, it's never said in the manga, no matter how much people want it to be true, it only became like that after war beat falling because fuji didn't know how to end it so he copied an old concept that was never used. Devils are simply strong or weak, that's it, human perception does matter but not that much, that was just symbolism for the human-devil relationship. I hope the manga gets axed and I hope we never get a s2 and I hope the movie flops. |

| I loved fma 2003 a lot despite it going its own direction later on. Persona 5 Strikers was one of my fav games in the series for the story despite not being a core game. So I mostly say yes, but diverging from the source can create wrecks like Tsukihime the animation. |

| It's not an adaptation thing, but I was nervous about the alternate timeline movies for Code Geass. I'm glad they specified it was an alternate timeline, because I would hate for the original ending to be altered. I'd have loved if production and timeslot issues didn't alter the story in the first place, and if the plotlines we lost in the middle as a result were ever filled out, but I wouldn't want the overall storytelling to be significantly altered. Also not an adaptation, but it is a different format than the original, and a case where extra content did alter an ending: Final Fantasy X -Will- and the following novel is the worst, and I don't think anyone particularly considers it a part of the canon. As far as adaptations go, generally I just like to see them as a different thing. Both still exist, and can be appreciated as their own things. It sucks when an adaptation downgrades something, in my eyes, but it doesn't make the original cease to exist. I suppose the issue therein lies with fans and how they receive various works. If new fans of a thing accept and exclusively interact with an altered version of the source content, it can kind of suck when you're a fan of the original. Sometimes, there are bad actors who will try to police your enjoyment of an older thing, too. /tangent Oh, topically? I much prefer the P3 protagonist's name as Minato Arisato vs Makoto Yuuki, but it is what it is! Atlas does these things. |

I know that I've seen it happen but nothing that instantly comes to mind. I think it's perfectly fine as long as the original creator is okay with it. In the best case it might even expand the scope of the original creator and make them consider new possibilities for their story, but I wouldn't like to see any adaptations change things in a way that goes against the wishes of the original creator

| @CC Yeah not being able to pick the main character was one of the reasons why I went with the Steam PSP version instead of the remake when playing Persona 3 for the first time last year. I played Persona 4 Golden back in the PS Vita days (it was the reason I even got that console in the first place) and really liked the atmosphere and style of it but I've yet to play Persona 5 |

| Bleach TYBW anime has been doing this recently, since the arc was rushed in the manga. For example, Ukitake got a whole backstory with Mimihagi which the manga lacked. I think this is a very cool idea to do if executed correctly. |

| I'm not sure if this counts, but the Nier Automata adaptation. While the game itself is packed with lore and stuff, it's mainly found in locations not many player will bother to find. It's even necessary to watch the stage play(s), books, CD dramas (I think) to get the full experience. So I'm glad the anime explores the lore deeper especially adding scenes or dedicating an episode even for crucial plot points most players will miss in the game. |
