Now don't get me wrong, I don't think it's a bad song by all means, in fact, I think it's a nice OP that represents Oshi No Ko well, but sometimes, I don't think it's worthy of being considered the greatest anime song of all time, espically judging from it's views on Youtube. There are many anime songs I can name that I think are better than it in a way. What's your honest opinion on it in regards to why it's so popular and does it really deserves more than a hundred million views on Youtube?

You said it: "I don't think". Its a personal opinion. I also have many other songs and ops I like way more but Idol first of all is from Yoasobi who are already really popular and Idol is just objectively a pretty good song. And bc so many just like it but even more also really love it, you can see that its a song that has the mass appeal, a catchy melody, great vocals, great visuals (if op or music video included), a song specifically made for a medium, etc.
Nobody knows the secret to a song being that popular, otherwize almost every new song of a smart band/group/person would hit like that. They just hit the right spot in all these different aspects to make it appealing to so many people

Stop hating. If that can’t be considered an all time anime song then idk what could be. Sounds like you hating now because it got so popular because you said it yourself, it’s great. I would be more confused if it was shitty and it became popular, but we can all agree the song is a banger so there is really no reason to ask why it became so overwhelmingly popular…

First few notes are incredibly catchy and captivating, which means everything. Even if you skip openings, those few notes will leave an impression.

I was wondering the same thing but after hearing so many songs that I couldn't justify their popularity I eventually just accepted that my taste in weeb music isn't exactly aligned with the mainstream.

It's a matter of preference. Just because you don't enjoy it all that well doesn't mean the whatever millions that did view it didn't.

Damn some of these people in this thread are so braindead. I’ll give you an actual answer to the question.

The first reason Idol explodes was because of the artist herself. Yoasobi is an extremely popular singer who explodes onto the scene back in 2019 largely in part due to her song “Racing into the Night” (275 million views on YouTube) and in 2020 with “Monster” (351 million views on YouTube). So going in to Oshi no Ko, people were already hyped for the song expecting yet another masterpiece. So there was already an initial high expectation that the song would be amazing.

The second reason is the anime itself. The song debuted as the ending theme of the first 1 hour and 20 minute of Oshi no Ko. This episode is considered by a large number of people to be one of the best opening episodes of an anime, something I agree with. As a result, many people became drawn to Oshi no Ko, and many people ended up hearing the song just from watching that first episode.

The third reason is the song itself ties perfectly the emotional first episode of the anime. Of course people ended up losing their god damn minds over the song.

The fourth reason was that anime fans spread this song by word of mouth like wildfire.

The fifth and most important reason is that as you said, the song is good. In my opinion, it slaps.

Because of these factors it naturally blew up. It had all the conditions to blow up, and naturally it did.

The song itself is a banger It’s well-crafted, catchy, and fits seamlessly with the anime’s themes and story ig that’s why the song blew up; sometimes the internet naturally highlights bangers ✨

It's sad, we have to adapt to the world changing around us over time, including musical trends and others Even if we don't like certain trends, we shouldn't dismiss them entirely either It takes all sorts, haha!

They have pretty faces, and after years and years the sound they've made is still muzak to my ears, so they must have learned something under their sleeves, after all.

And they live with straights who tell them they were kings, so it's another given.

Because the song's a banger - of course this is subjective and opinions for each person are different. On top of that, the lyrics tell the story of what an idol has to go through each and every day for their job (yes, real life idols too) really well

It’s a combination of a lot of reasons.

It is the opening of the most popular anime series of its year that happened to be a series that people from all genre fandoms ALL watched. Not only action Shounen fans, not only slice of life fans, not only idol fans, not only suspense fans. Because of this it already had more exposure than the openings of other popular anime.

Yoasobi has been on a hot streak the last 5 or so years and a lot of the way they compose is in line with what Gen Z likes in modern music, and this was their most “American-sounding” song to date.

There is a dance associated with it, and it went viral on social media, even among people who haven’t watched the anime or even people that don’t watch anime at all.

Hope this answers your question, it’s mainly just the exposure thing.

I'm not surprised at all that it ended up so popular. It's catchy and just perfect match for the series. The famous dance choreography, colorful visuals and simply the fact that the song is for an idol anime are also part of the reason. I think that the magic of "Idol" comes from the combination of great song and amazingly fitting visuals. Just like the ending, "Mephisto", is also one of a kind song.

For instance, you know that anime that’s called “Fireworks… blah blah blah” (I forgot the name, sorry(… Anyway, Uchiage Hanabi. Its ending theme by Kenshi Yonezu has, if I’m not wrong, about 500 mil views on YouTube but the anime itself, however, isn’t that popular, let alone highly acclaimed.

That’s unrelated but anyway.

So, the formula is something like this:
popular show, not so popular artist = boost to the artist’s popularity;
popular show, popular artist = synergy effect (basically, that’s what happened here);
obscure show, popular artist = no popularity boost or only the song gains views;
obscure show, obscure artist = no effect.

It is a great song with a stunning music video that has a lot of neat symbolism in it. Alongside that it doesn’t hurt that the song is catchy.

From what I understand this song was extremely popular in Japan. I've heard personal accounts from friends that this song was being played in public areas a lot.

The song is good too, so doesn't surprise me that people picked up on it. + the OP / music video is good so makes for a double kill. Yoasobi is awesome, I like them quite a bit.

This may be a reach but we didn't really get much Ai Hoshino in the anime for... Obvious reasons. The music video is basically all about her so that might have something to do with it.

Composition is awesome.
Interaction between instruments is well achieved.
Lyrics are strong, catchy, emotive, and tell a story.
Drums are varied and complex.
Bassline is complex.
Guitar an keyboards are powerful an intrincate, with little repetition, never becoming overwhelming.

Iruka singing is top-tier. Lots of inflections, lots of mode shifts, all of that at neckbreak speed and without missing breath.
Her performance alone would be enough to make it the best song of the millenium, if not of all anime history outright.

On top if that, the song totally captures the whole mood and story of the anime it opens for.
Add to it that their live performances are on the same level as their studio recording, showing the song is not faked in post with autotune.

If it had any flaw, it would be that it feels like a train hitting you at full speed.
But for me, that is totally a plus.

I suggest to check the reactions from DrumRollTony and Katrinka to listen to pros actually describing what they hear in it.

Indeed, Idol is not just "good" or "likeable", but it has measurable, quantifyiable qualities that can be analized and compared to determine que quality put into its writing, composition and performance is simply on a different level.

I live in Japan and you’d be surprised at how popular it actually is here. Like obviously you’d think that the populace enjoys it but for the past 6 months I don’t think I’ve been able to go to a bar or restaurant that plays music in Tokyo without hearing Idol at least once if not multiple times.

Besides that song itself being pretty good, the anime adaptation of Oshi no Ko is guaranteed to be a success. The manga was good and already had a huge following that was created by the mangaka who made Kaguya-sama, big names from the industry were attached to the project, the music done by very prominent artists, and oh god the amount of promotion and advertising they put into this show. Billboards, collaborations, social media, and even a Memcho vtuber for god's sake. It's not surprising that the OP itself got a lot of success in return with it becoming YOASOBI's highest viewed video on youtube.
