There's obviously a lot of melodrama in this show; but I like how it's never really blown out of proportion. Kumiko actually handled the loss quite well. She was bummed out about it for sure, but naturally she's allowed to be, who wouldn't. Kuroe again only had good intentions, but she still should have probably gave Kumiko some space after the announcements. But she was right about the morale, as we already see Kumiko's boyfriend down in the dumps for it. Even if Kuroe truly is better than Kumiko, one thing that Taki-sensei appears to be missing is the overall sense of morale for the ensemble as a whole if he had picked Kumiko. And heck they really might be on the same level. I think it's just facts as Shuuichi states that if they're on equal footing, the president should get the part to up morale. You want a leader to take charge and be at the forefront of the battle to rally the soldiers. But respect on Kumiko's part, who, whether genuine or not, puts on a face to try and keep that morale up (which unfortunately is not enough, and she also has to deal with encouraging the discouraged who did not make the auditions. And issue that we didn't really see in previous years but are seeing now, because it's our main character in charge. Now she's being faced with the dilemna of allowing those who don't want to continue to go, or to somehow keep them in for a strong next year- a dilemna which her vice president and drum major are at odds about). And when Kuroe comes to confront her again, Kumiko makes it clear to her that what's done is done, and to accept it and move forward. My man- er, woman.
Now that said, Kanade brought up a thought that hadn't crossed my mind- what if Taki-sensei IS actually messing up?? I guess I too have become one of those who have put blind faith in him like a divine being who can do no wrong and make no mistakes. But dang, I guess we can't count out the possibility. If that's the case, this opens up a pathway to more, new drama, with Reina. Heck it kind of already has begun, because Reina as we know is one of those who have put their blind faith into Taki-sensei, and as the one who LOVES him, is no doubt the one who trusts him the most. She can't handle the most minor of badmouthing on her sensei. Kumiko, on the other hand, seems to have taken Kanade's words as food for thought. We can assume that she wants to believe that yes, maybe Taki-sensei is f*cking up a little, because that would mean a stronger chance of her getting that solo as maybe Taki made a mistake in the auditioning. Meanwhile Reina, while too wanting to do the solo with Kumiko as her friend, seems to be showing less qualms about the outcome. Her focus seems to be more on winning. Getting to nationals. Achieving gold. Going pro in the future. Maybe that matters more to her than Kumiko thinks.
And Kumiko... maybe... just wants to enjoying playing music... and playing music with her friend. Maybe that girl she was in middle school never changed. Maybe she never wanted for the club to ever go for the nationals route, and instead just play for the fun and for the memories. Like we learned from the pool episode, Kumiko rejects Kuroe because Kuroe is like the person who Kumiko used to be, the one that she was running away from. Maybe she needs to learn that that's her true self, and accept herself for who she really is. Maybe it's a parallel of her indecisiveness of choosing a career: does she want to become Reina (she has stated that she has "caught up to her" in terms of her desire and passion to pursue higher goals), or maybe she wants to return to who she was as someone like Kuroe. To not care too much perhaps, to just live in the moment, and to enjoy it for what it is. Who knows. maybe it's not that deep. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

um ok so sorry for the text wall but it's 5am in the morning and I tend to go on aimless rambling mode late into the night when I can't sleep. Anyway, I started said rambling before I actually finished the episode (I like to get the thoughts down before I lose train of thought, even this train might be off the tracks and maybe crashed in a ditch), BEFORE the bridge scene at the end between Kumiko and Reina. And, well, uh, shit. Was expecting it to happen, but not so soon. Reina really does blindly follow her beloved Taki-sensei to no end. Look, if it's not dumb love, then I'm sure she has her reasons. But right now, she is looking mad obsessive and delusional. She is right to a certain extent. Taki-sensei is the one who's really in charge and they have to respect that. But leaders can make mistakes, and Kumiko JUST WANTS TO KNOW IF HE IS. Reina, on the other hand, would probably murder a hundred people if Taki-sensei told her to. Reina crushed Kumiko's soul on that bridge (or not, sure that would devastate anyone, but her spirit is down, not out), just because Kumiko suggested that MAYBE their sensei MIGHT be messing up JUST A LITTLE. But nah. Guess we can't even question our leadership, or at least this guy in particular, according to Reina.
Glad I'm watching this after it finished airing (again, one and a half years, but better late than never), because ngl this cliffhanger of Kumiko confronting Taki-sensei to find out what's going on, if something is going on, might just be in one of my top 10 cliffhangers of all time in terms of dying to know what's gonna happen next. But ok, enough yapping, my bad. Let's hit that next episode pronto. |
