An abacus is an analog calculator made from planks, sticks, and beads. It looks like this and it can be used for fundamentary mathematics.

This is a Japanese example. The Chinese example has extra beads.

I learned how to use an abacus, actually Chinese style, through my Chinese nanny and it kinda helped with mental arithmatics immensely when I was a kid. I even gave a Russian style abacus (счёты [shchjoty]) to my friend's little sister as a gift, a much easier version.

So, this is the question. Do you know how to use an abacus?

"Mamma Mia!" was Abba's cuss, I believe. And I think you use it in the same scenarios that you'd say "holy shit" and the like.

Oh, it must be because the file name in question is in Arabic or Farsi, AKA right-to-left scripts. Here it is.

I remember these from the Soviet era, some grocery and bakery clerks were using them, although they were bigger than the ones in your pictures and they were made out of some dark wood.

I still, remember the pleasant wooden clicking sound they made along with the smell of freshly baked bread.

I believe the Russian style ones are still used extremely sparingly in the northern parts of China where the Russian influences are still there among the minorities. And I thank my grandfather (rest in awesomeness) for introducing me to old Soviet era children's books that showed them.

i read an article which claimed that using an abacus helped improve memory.

i bought one for that purpose.

pretty fun to use.

i think it improved my memory and visualization skills.

pretty easy to learn.  the lower beads each count as 1 if they're touching the center bar.  the upper beads count as 5 if they're touching the center bar.  each stick is one digit.

think i'll randomly add and subtract some numbers right now.

No, I don't know how to use it, even tho it was supposed to be "helpfull tool" at primary school I never learnt how to use it, usually when doing anykind of mathematical calculations [if I have to do, cause I don't do that out of pleasure/hobby] than I use my mind/paper + pen with handwriting/calculator in phone or pc

We had an abacus in my first and second grade (American) school, however it was never formally taught to us and we all just messed around with it. Nobody I know can use it and neither can I.

I played Ao Oni in highschool so I briefly knew how the japanese used them because of a puzzle.

I have since forgotten since it has been over a decade.

I think I know how to use one. But it's possible I don't know, as I don't understand what anybody would want with one.

Yes, I learned to use it in primary school.

Didn't remember we did until I saw this topic, but I do know how to use it.
This is your reminder to drink water 💦 or eat some fruit  🍒 🥝
