These two men are my favorite side characters already, once in a while I had a long ass laugh because it was such a fun tease from Cherry to let Ataru use a yellow tie to make a ribbon on Lum's horn: to lose her power in flying and get others affection 😭 Hell Sakura segment prior to this was entertaining and the ritual oh my made me feel so hard to sympathize because we don't know who is in more trouble lol

The humor is basically slapstick comedy. Not that it's a bad thing, just not really my cup of coffee. I really like the way Lum speaks, the "--cha' at the end sounds cute. Of course Shinobu is not going to listen to what Ataru has to say and swims in her own misunderstanding. Were the jokes like these in the original? Someone please tell me.

Many jokes were more extreme than the ones in the remake, because at the time there was no such thing as SJW and "politically correct" was just a far, random thought (better or not in general, not the point here).

Guess the highlight for me was the introduction of that Sakura character.
I love anyone voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro, so that was an instant bonus for the episode.
Apart from that everything is going how you would expect it to.
Nothing too interesting about this series so far, and I don't know how long the whole bullying of the mc when he does something will last before it becomes boring and repetitive (it's pretty much already at that point now).

Bullying of Ataru is pretty much the main ongoing theme of Urusei Yatsura. The joke is that he's unlucky, like they said in episode one, but also to some extent it's played as karmic punishment. I think the issue with it in the remake is that in the original, Ataru was simply much more detestable. A pretty good example is in Beautiful Dreamer where he's given his dream harem of dozens of women worshipping him and dancing nude around him, then complains that Lum isn't in it. Him getting bullied and beat up was something that he kind of had coming for him because he was beyond intensely lecherous, and he was also just straight up an asshole most of the time as well--something I'm seeing as somewhat downplayed here that makes him just seem like an average joe anime protag.

I will say that it's pretty early into the show and they're adapting early manga chapters where his character wasn't completely developed to this point yet though. So there's a possibility he's start living up to his karmic punishment at some point. Whether or not that level of punishment is worth watching when the MC is more deliberately hateable is up to you, though. If not, I'd say it's boutta time to drop this show for you.

Also Sakura's VA in this when she's sick was fantastic. Her episode has been the best so far.

That is one of the things I really enjoyed in the og show, the sheer absurdity of the situation and jokes

One episode I like has a terrified Ataru run screaming out of the house without shoes. He immediately returns home, puts on shoes, and runs out again.

Again, more Rumiko Takahashi-styled humor which I like a lot. However, I think that this kind of ingenious comedy was improved with Ranma 1/2, making me feel Urusei a litlle "rough around the edges". In other aspects, it was nice to hear the original opening as part of the incidental music <3.

Sawashiro's Sakura is pretty nice, and I think Setsuji Satou's Satoshi is a perfect match; I had to check to make sure that Shigeru Chiba wasn't reprising the role. I can see how this adaptation may seem a bit fast-paced for new fans.

Also nice Mao and Maison Ikkoku easter eggs, the OG anime always threw around references, so I hope we get a few here and there.

As someone who adores Maison Ikkoku, i feel compelled to ask where the reference was? I definitely missed it and have no idea where to look.

Some of the books Lum is throwing at Ataru's classmates are the original Maison Ikkoku tankoubon from back in the day.

Hard to follow what? There's no plot. It's Urusei Yatsura TikTok Edition - you only need 30s attention span to know what's going on.

It's fine so far for somebody who's new to Urusei Yatsura. I guess the next few episodes will be character introductions but after that I hope so plot will follow. Lum getting jealous and electro shocking Ataru is funny for now but eventually it's going to get old.

Some parts feel sketchy, e.g. Lum's interactions with other human characters. The anime did not take time to establish her popularity among young men, but just introduced two lewd fans. It's not a huge complaint but the show could have handled these parts more naturally.

Lum is so cute and the whole segment with Sakura and the evil spirits had me dying. Same with the extra scene with Mamo's character. Also the mom's acting is on point.
I love all the unapologetic goofiness and absurdity that somehow still feels natural.. As a 90's kid born into anime this type of humor was formative for me. I was obsessed with Ranma 1/2 when I was like 5~7 and later on with Inuyasha at 10~12. Takahashi Rumiko might as well be my second mom lol.

How did they get a picture of him in his disguise?

exactly.

Ataru apologizing for hitting Sakura was something... and i'm glad she's already in the picture, after a couple of well identified episodes of the original run she became my favorite lady of the show.

"Jugemu Jugemu..." why do i think about a Gintama annoying monkey with an extremely long name

nice to see Megane, but will the other Lum stormtroopers appear? And she is overpowered against Ataru even when nerfed, and he's dumb for removing the ribbons knowing that she will double down on electricity. Too bad we don't see her saving some for Cherry that runs away like a coward while namedropping... a friend of Yusuke Urameshi.

Mendo is already at the door too and already his same voice of Light Yagami / Kotaro Tatsumi is recognizable. Good. Ten can wait, there are a lot of characters i want to watch before him.

he's dumb for removing the ribbons knowing that she will double down on electricity.

This is what happened in the manga too. Ataru wanted to remove the ribbons so Lum could go back to his UFO to sleep, because she said she was going to stay in his house ''forever'', since she couldn't fly anymore.

The wrestling part instead is a new... though one of the moves was cloned from anime episode "Valentine's Day Horror", but generally Lum is never depicted as strong (muscle wise) in both manga and OG anime.

Yes, an episode of those i remember the most from the original series was the one when she was supposed to train for the fight against a giant student and got hooked on pills. But honestly the real reason why it stayed in my memory is because she looked so good wearing a gi and with a different hairdo.

Yes 137th, "Lum's Courageous Duel! An Ironic Victory", another funny episode which I have talked about in another post, about Lum muscle-strenght too (the scene where Ataru raises the ''missing attempt'' flag like in Olympics makes me laugh every single time !)

I've notice like every time someone's got some criticism for this its either a nitpick that makes no sense, complaining about things that were also in the freaking original or saying its not funny (which if it ain't your type of humor just move the heck on) or it's to violent. Like come on man.

Opening : meh
Conclusion : I may not like the way it is for Urusei Yatsura without that nostalgic opening, the episode are a bit different from side to side comparison LUM as usual is a bit toxic then before with her spoiling alot on ataru's life shinobu stands no chance I wonder if they shift the story differently like how would it actually goes and their future without lum's presence and the alien invasion

If there is one thing i liked better in this than the original is that in this one Sakura was a little less as hole ish as in the original all she did was transfer all the evil spirits into him and left him like that and always felt it was a terrible thing at least in this one it is more of unintended side effect and she actually intention got rid of them.

Sigh it is a bit of a struggle to watch as when i watched the original i was young and the jokes are funny but now that i am older i find the humor in this one a lot more irritating and the characters very unlikeable not just ataru with his pervertness but pretty much all the cast are rather very dickish in general, Probably cause the jokes have no aged all that great in the last 4+ decades.

I still like the series tough despite its flaws and the animation is a major plus but i won't blame people on giving up on watching it as it is not everyones cup of tea either.

Poor Ataru. He gets physically and verbally abused by Lum.
No amount of love will save him from all of this.

That Sakura chick is quite something. An Exorcist and a beauty.

Lum looks great with ribbons. Too bad she didn't wear them for long. I love seeing powerless Lum being completely vulnerable to the human world.
Welp. Ataru is going to get a lifetime of electrocution.

I was wondering this myself since Kakugari is absent from the opening credits. It's looking like they're going to be downplaying the Stormtroopers which is a shame, I always loved their goofball antics. This seems to be trying to stick closer to the manga, though, where they weren't as big a factor. Kind of a pity but I guess I get it. It's an adaptation of the manga and not the 80s show. But like you said, at least we have hard confirmation that Mendou is going to be in this show, and with an incredibly hilarious VA choice like that I have high hopes for his introduction episode.

The characters, every single one is insufferable. The main character makes the show wayy worse, Lum is barely a character beyond her actions for the "plot", and every supporting character is super annoying.
