my take is that.... Shion created a new Earth with the memories from the ME network along with Yin who collected said memories/spirits and gave them to the new earth. Suou was a copy so her memories were stored in the meteroid stone This new Earth was finally completed and activitated by Hei regaining his contractor power to manipulate Gate particles and using the gate. The Yin-ish boy we see is probably the new being. Hei is alive with his contractor power back. Yin herself dead probably. And probably....the reason for the short series is.... MOVIE. I actually liked this season better but wished it was longer and actually finished with 24 episodes. still 8/10. |

Jeez @ at all the people going "You just were too stupid to understand what was going on". It's not the understanding part that is the problem here, the problem is the massive information dump and amount of twists during the last 20 minutes of the series which feel like the come out of nowhere at times and and the general rushed feeling. Like others have said,if they had introduced some of those plot elements earlier instead of wasting time with that dread guy (Already forgot his name again, shows how much impact many of the new characters had on me ><) for example it would have turned out so much better. And no, I'm not a hater of the new characters, I actually enjoyed the major part of the characters who managed to survive for longer than one episode or who didn't just disappear somewhere along the way. |

This ending just reiterated Suou's uselessness as a character. Honestly, she did not do SHIT the entire season except annoy most fans with her Sailor Moon transformation. The only reason she existed at all was because of Shion, but this could have all happened without her, too. She played such an insignificiant role, and the fact that she was the protagonist in this new season is utterly laughable. |

Well I'm not exactly sure what to say about this season, I liked it but now I feel like there's even more questions that were left unanswered so I'm hoping for a third season. I'm gonna also assume that the Yin dressed up as a boy or er...looking like one was the prophesied child. So it looks like theirs going to be someone else that Hei is going to have to kill since I'm pretty sure he's still alive. It's also kind of ironic that Kirihara and Oreille are now known as the syndicate since that's what she had been trying to track down if I remember right. I'm also happy that Suou got to have a happy life on the copied Earth even though she still feels like she's missing something which makes me believe that if there's going to be another season(please god let there be another -_-) that she'll get to meet Hei again somehow. Overall I'd give the series a 9/10 though considering I'm an easy rater and I liked how the season was going the ending just felt way to rushed to me. I just kinda noticed/realized something what happened to Hazuki? After she killed Genma she disappeared....okay seriously we need a third season and or movie probably both...yeah both xD |

Definitely a WTf?! mind fuzzling ending. But I think I've sorted it out enough to throw my thoughts on here, though I'm sure plenty of people have already posted similar stuff: Shion used his power and all those memories and stuff that the supercomputer and those empty shells had collected to create some kind of Earth copy with no Hell or Heaven's Gate. Shion's contract/wish (that I guess cost him his life) was to send Suou there (and I assume July's wish to stay with her caused him to go too). Mina Hazuki killed Genma Shizume and then (presumably) disappeared (still alive but whereabouts unknown) Hei probably did not kill Yin, but his powers might have come back when he went up to her (maybe because the meteor core had been destroyed?) and he used them to somehow knock Yin out and end her transformation or w/e. The boy who appears at the end and apparently kills John Doe and his soldiers has got to be the being from the prophesy that is supposed to bring calamity. |

DtB isn't platfrom for cuteness. So true... anyhoo, the problem here is that while dtb2 was a pretty good anime as a standalone story it was the equivalent of lobotomy for people who know who Hei and co. are from dtb1. Most people here are quite able to piece together the end and come up with a semi-decent explanation for all the "vague" hints the story gives througout and at the end. The prob is that the last episode felt like a condensed version of the intended 24-epi season. Honestly, I would have checked if my player's settings were set to speed 4x it all came that fast. And that is what killed it.Season 1 took the time to introduce all characters smoothly and in the end gave a powerful, if rather open-to-interpretation end. In dtb2 it all comes like fast food aka junk food. So, Shion created a new earth for his sis. Aww, no sh!t. Do I care? Nooooo, I hardly know who Shion is, I saw him like for 5 min total this season. So Suou lost her memories. Aww, no sh!t. Do I care? Nooooo, she was so annoying and purposeless it actually made me feel good to just erase her. The moment dark Yin sucked her soul was the highlight of the episode. seriously. So Hei killed Yin in the end? Do I care? Yes (that hurt) but it all seems like pointlessness piled upon pointlessness since the prophecy was fulfilled anyway and the apocalypse kid woke up. I guess Hei missed that memo while taking nekkid Yin for a stroll in the starlight. plus, I really objected to the dumbing down of characters like Misaki (wtf, they made her an obsessed Hei groupie) and Mao (I really liked Mao in s1 and I was glad to see him here but they made him into a sorely comic relief character) And the enemy contractors: they came and died so fast I had to keep from blinking or I was afraid I would miss their appearance. The only character that got some balanced development was July. Which probably happened by accident. |

Put simply, this season was bad. Removing everything about Hei that made him awesome in S1. "Replacing" him with a totally useless loli character that does nothing the entire season. Rushing the ending so much so that nothing makes sense. Having said that, I'd watch another season so long as it focuses on the actual main characters. I mean the ones that don't suck. |

While there were some truly great episodes this season overall disappointed me, mostly because it was too damn short to be able to do much with it. The ending was left completely open and there are the upcoming OVAs to look forward to but this season still ended a bit lacking, a shame really. I'd rate individual eps extremely high but overall I have to say meh. |

Personally, while I enjoyed the first season more than the second I can honestly say it I didn't find it all that bad. It was a little iffy towards the end, but as the credits roll, and you get to see what happens to the characters after everything, really saved it for me. Sure there are tons of things unanswered, but I find a series that is this short much more enjoyable with an ending that leaves it open for another season rather than one that completely wraps everything up. After all, I'm not ready to see all the contractors go just yet. I'll be looking forward to another season if they do dish one out. |

Liked it, there is still some question unanswered but maybe there'll be a season 3 someday given the popularity of the show. It was poorly explained and was kinda hard to figure out but I think it goes this way: Yin wanted to die by Hei's hand all along but Hei was the one not wanting to so she kept going on as Hinazami until he would stop her. With Suou's and July's life at stakes and his resolve made he chosed to kill her as she wanted, freeing Suou and July and wheter he got his power back from Yin to kill her or from killing her is unknown. The gate also granted Hei's wish of giving a normal life to Suou costing him something we don't know about. Suou's memory got arranged so that she never met Hei and July but she still vaguely remember about Hei since she loved him and July is there watching over her. Now the main problem is the space and time distortion because the end make it look like things never happened on Suou's side and that it happened on Misaki's side, actually it couldn't have happened this way without Suou meaning that either Suou is actually dead and dreaming or that a second dimension was created the moment Hei wished for it. The gate is afterall something beyond human. Well it's what I think happened. |

Personally, this whole series was just one big WTF for me >.> I don't think season 2 was even in the same league as Season 1. They just took the whole DTB theme and threw in some stuff that didn't even matter in the 1st season (i.e. annoying, angsty teenagers and their relationship problems, etc). Edit: walk said: This ending just reiterated Suou's uselessness as a character. Honestly, she did not do SHIT the entire season except annoy most fans with her Sailor Moon transformation. I'd like to ask in and action oriented anime, why was Suou the main character when she did nothing except for the last episode (which was only for 3 mins tops)? People hate when a story conveniencly put the main character on the spotlight and people also hate when the protagonist is someone normal. People hate when the pace is too fast and people hate when the pace is too slow. People hate when the show's plot is cliche and simple but also hate it when it is original and more complicated. People hate when the show is too short and people hate when it is too long. People hate when there's still question unanswered and people hate when there's none. People hate happy ending, people also hate bad ending and the same goes to semi-good ending. People also hate open ending. People hate when the protagonist get power up and people hate when he don't. People hate when the protagonist do nothing and then hate when he actually do something. People hate when the a show follow logic and people hate when it isn't. ... Could continue for a lot of line. The show wasn't meant to please YOU, there will always be thing you won't like that some people will, that's what we call taste. |

After a few bad episodes, episodes 10 and 11 gave me hope that there would be a satisfying conclusion this season that would be less confusing and answer more questions than last season. Well this was by far way worse than last season's finale. Kinda makes me wish I skipped it. This season introduced some great characters and I certainly enjoyed myself up until now, but this conclusion has left me in despair. 6/10 |

The ending was better than I excepted but first season is still the best one. I didn't like the Suou part of the ending, she and her family all together, wtf ? For me it should be a little bit less happy this happy ending. And of course more Hei, the ending says almost nothing about how he ended, is he dead or is he somewhere with Yin ? But who knows maybe they wanted to leave some plot unrevealed in case for third season. All in all it wasn't a bad season so 8/10 is my score. Waiting for OVA. |

That was pretty goddamn awful. I'm aware that Darker than Black isn't supposed to make sense, but that was really just plain horrible. Honestly, all the plot points conglomerated into a giant shit storm that resulted in some pretty random results, in all honesty. This entire season was basically just the first season with a lack of interesting characters/action, which makes it, frankly, horrible. 6/10 out of bias, will mostly drop down to a 3-5 after I recover from the aftershock of watching and waiting for 12 episodes of garbage. August 7th's Return = Best part of episode IMO. |

For those confused about the ending: As I was asked to explain, explain I shall try. Although my collection was lost when I had to reformat my comp, so bear with my memory: I believe that the most important thing about the series as a whole is that the meteor fragment around Suou's neck. I believe that Suou is not actually Inzanagi, as the anime would lead you to believe. I think it represents the fragment. The thing is, the fragment is the link that created Suou and is the part of her that she needs to stay alive. If you remember, Shion created Suou after the meteor hit when they were in Russia. She was created through the power of the fragment, and only that is enought to keep her alive without the use of life support or a doll (hence all of the dolls that Shion and Oreille use to create a spirit observer network). So, when Inzanagi and Inzanami met, Inzanami (Yin) had a purpose for destroying it. However, and this is the bit that you really should have your own opinion on, the meeting in the prophecy states that hells gates will cause the end of the world. BUT, in order for this to be prevented, both need to be destroyed, but they only both be destroyed by each other while the prophecy is still active. So, when Inzanami destroys the fragment, she has essentially activated the prophecy, while Suou is killed after the fragment keeping her alive is gone. When Hei comes along, the reason why Yin went around killing contractors was to allow enough power to regenerate the contractor star of Hei, meaning he can use his abilities again. As the prophecy has been started, the only way this can be stopped is through the death of Inzanami who started it, and because Inzanagi no longer exists, the death limit is lifted and Inzanami can be killed by those that generated the gate in the first place: Contractors. So, when Yin asked Hei to 'kill her', it was to actually save the world from the end of the world, from a fate that she knew she could control, but knew that only Hei powerful enough to stop it. The huge emitting light at the end was the death of Yin and the reversal of the gate opening, caused by Hei. There are a couple of missing pieces in there, such as Shion trying to reach Yin and why Suou was transported to a different world. Maybe Shion was the last piece of the process Inzanami needed to begin the process, so he made sure that Hei, Suou and co. were with him when he was to help prevent it (known through his spirit network). For Suou, maybe the light ommited was a reverse field that generated the gate to bring life rather than take it (hell is keeper of souls, do reversing it would give them back?), but because the fragment held her memories, she remembered nothing and was removed of being a contractor, which was generated when the fragment was first activated (back on the train in Russia). The same with July, was brought to live and given a conscience, hence why he was a normal human at the end. Thinking outside the box there. ^_^ If there is anything I've missed, do say and ill try to fill it inl. Might submit this as a review. :P Also be aware that this is MY interpretation of the ending. If you disagree, bring a constructive response rather than just flame with 'Thats stupid and would never happen' etc. and bring yours to the plate instead. |

At least according to [BSS] - episode 11, time 06:07, Kobayashi to Misaki. Should I teh quote? Ahh yes. I did say I was going from memory. Although I'm sure they discover that they got the two mixed up and that eventually they believed Suou (Or Section 3 + CIA thought it was Shion) was Inzanagi. Hence the CIA wouldn't have been taking out Tokyo trying to find Shion/Suou and instead going for Hei (while showing their dominance). Why else would the CIA/Section 3 turn up everywhere Suou went, such as the building where her 'dad' was killed, and even at the beginning when she had to be protected by April (even she thought it was Shion) before Hei picked her up. If Hei is Inzanagi, then all the same applies except that the prophecy does not mention what happens upon death of wither of them, so it means that a 3rd series would have to be a certainty, to confirm: A) If Hells gate did still open. B) If Hei actually kill Yin. C) If the prophecy is even genuine (prophecies are predictions of the future, so they are not garenteed). But with this, its hard to explain how Suou and July came to exist again. It's also hard to understand whether Hei was trying to kill Yin for personal reason or because he believed in the prophecy. With my theory, Yin was helpless in her role and knew she had to die to save everyone else. Hei knew this and hence why he said he had to kill her. Im pretty sure too that it is not confirmed anywhere in the series that Inzanagi and Inzanami are humans OR contractors. Section 3 just try to put the pieces together to gain understanding of it. The prophecy just says 'Inzanami and Inzanagi meet', it never reveals what or who it is, so my theory is still technically viable. |

The pacing was too fast for twelve episodes so the end really isn't that great, but still awesome nonetheless. Can you say best anime of Fall 09(well, yes since the others are nothing but the usual...though Nyan Koi was pretty good, that's the only respectable one I watched other than this.) The ending is a bit sad. Almost everyone died. Though, that did happen to the previous one's ending. I smiled a little when July smiled. He didn't have the need to use his hands that time. And also, is it me or does Kirihara at the end look like the main character from Bayonetta? |

gendouhydeist said: Plot said: I don't get why so many people are going WTF about this last episode. Btw, if you guys are complaining that there are too many holes in the plot, don't watch DTB, because it's suppose to have this many plot holes. Things that make sense, DO NOT make sense in DTB. Why? Simply, because it's Darker Than Black. The thing that makes DTB unique from all others, and the thing that keeps you watching for more, is that it leaves you to think about what already happened or what's going to happen. YOU fill in the missing pieces, instead of the script writer. If you want a good storyline, better off watching another anime. If you want some "dark" mystery, action, and some really cool, weird, out-of-the-world twists, DTB is for you. You choose. Besides, it's not really that hard to understand if you watched all 12 episodes. Also, if you have a question, be sure read the discussion thread over and look at the replies. I'm sure some people have asked the same questions as you may have. Top 'WTF's probably are: -2 Yin's -August 7 (Magician) being alive -The moon AKA New Earth, or Earth 2.0 -Hei So: Along with some of my own thoughts and the previous answers throughout this thread (Yes, I have read through every single post beginning from page 1) I'll try to give my impression of the final plot. - I think the 2 Yin's are as someone stated before, one Yin (Izanami) and the other, a clone made by Shion (Izanagi). Shion made a deal with Yin, along with Madame Oreille the information specialist, for a plan that involves creating a copy of a "new" earth, where contractors and gates don't exist. To do this, Shion made copies of himself inside the building where Dr. Pavlichenko housed the super computer, and with the information/memories of all the people in the world, Shion created a New Earth. There were some requirements that needed to be fullfilled in order to make this happen: 1) Madame Oreille's twin dolls controled and ruled over the doll network, so the memories of the world probably was obtained this way. 2) Dr. Pavlichenko (Suou/Shion's father) was working on the ME, Memory Extractor, so he had access to everyone's memory in the system. 3) Shion's contractor power was to copy things, so he copied everything and everyone into the new world. 4) Yin's power somehow made the final act and started all this transformation. Part of Yin's deal was also to take Suou (and July) to the new Earth. Again, I am guessing here, and I think that all the contractors that Yin killed before, are sent to the new Earth, minus their contractor powers/restrictions to lead normal lives, as indicated by the flying souls around Yin. I also agree with what someone said earlier in this thread, as a response to the 2 Yins, and the last one seen at the very end of the episode (inside the coffin): Shion's part of the bargain was probably to create a copy of Yin, so that she would still be alive for the next season after Hei killed her. Now, for the magician: it's either 1) August was never killed by Hei or the Genma (final blow), because there was no scene where his star fell 2) July was probably in a 'wishing state', meaning inside the gate he would get what he wished for, which is being with Suou, and lose something, which is being part of the mission/M16 team along with August 8 the Magician, so it was actually just a sort of 'dream' when July was thinking about Suou. Hei killed Yin finally, to trigger the New Earth transformation. My thoughts are that the Izanagi/Izanami prophecies had nothing to do with the New Earth. The New Earth thing was probably just a deal Yin and Shion made, and the AFTERMATH of the current Darkerthanblack Earth was probably what the prophecy was about. Izanagi/Izanami meeting = the 'yin' inside the coffin, who sucks up people's soul, I think? So to top it off, Hei is on the old Earth along with Misaki, Mao, and basically everyone who's alive from Season 1 + 2, minus Suou and July. On NEW Earth, the contractor business never occured. Oh yeah, and the flying car w/ Madame Oreille was kind of weird.. but then again she was wearing a spacesuit and had a special laser gun that zapped contractors dead in some kind of energy bubble back in Episode 11.. Now, as for Hei's power.. I think they returned, since you can see his star shining brightly again. Previously, when he lost his powers, instead of a falling star indicating a contracter's death, it dimmed out, and now his star is bright. No idea how he got his powers back, maybe Yin did some magic? Or maybe Yin put Suou's powers back into Hei, because if you recall back at the start of Episode 3, Hei got zapped by the energy bubble and lost his contractor powers by Section 3, and all the power accidently went into Suou's Meteor fragment, and so Suou probably held that contractor powers. *Again, this is just speculation and will either be verified or proved wrong, hopefully, when the OVA's are aired.* Anyways, looking forward to Season 3! @plot exceptionally explained hope you guys understand it as well, we have the same thought about deal was about and yeah i've registered here because of this topic.. it really intrigues me Wow thank you for that summation, I think whether right or wrong on the speculations, that should at least put some concrete ground in peoples heads. Some of the same ideas with the new earth were exactly what I was thinking as well. GJ Plot! |
