It was okay, not great, not terrible

We got like one episode of Deed and Parn looking wistfully at each other to tease a romance that the rest of the series had no time to actually develop between the rushed plot

At least the music was good

that blood red color palette drenching the hellscape throughout
fucking amazing man this series kicked off hard somewhere around the middle and never looked back, full throttle intensity and visual deliciousness relentlessly to the end deserves every bit of its status as an icon
that bittersweet cello outro, riding out on the wings of legend. wow

The writing is so ridiculous and obviously unfinished - much like the animation. There is some truly good stuff in here - particularly in the opening - but the grandness of the final act is a detriment, not a boost. Does it look metal af? Hell yes it does. But that's all it is. None of the themes that were introduced earlier are carried through. Nobody in the story matters except Parn and Deedlit. Nothing is explained, and it doesn't feel like some purposeful mysticism, it's just unfinished.

Really if they wanted to make a coherent story out of this OVA, they should have left it at Ghim's death. Build up some intrigue, make taking down Karla the objective for the protagonists. Foreshadow stuff like how love and will can overcome magic, build out some actual characters. Don't even touch the kingdom politics stuff. That obviously wasn't their objective - this was one of the last breaths of Bubble Economy Japan OVAs that were trying to outdo each other in grand ambition. I just really lament the fact that they had the bones for a really solid and interesting show. The more they added, the more needlessly convoluted it became.

I still had fun and the deaths throughout were awesome. Boy, what I'd give for something with this sensibility being done well.
