Power Struggle - 11/3/19 Well as usual the show starts slow as they attempt to get more wrestlers on the card but they do tend to lead to future developments like Jericho announcing he will face Tanahashi at Wrestle Kingdom or Sanada possibly facing Saber Jr. for the British Heavyweight Championship So my show grade really starts kicking in at Naito vs Taichi. Taichi can have some good matches once and awhile but this was just okay. I never really saw a point where I thought Taichi would actual win Next would be the Junior Tag League Finals. I watched every match of the Junior Tag League so this is an important match for me. For me there was just a lack of tags, thus the flow of the match just felt off. I wasn't able to get as emotionally involved as I would of wanted to. I'm very surprised though they had Soh and Yoh win their 3rd straight Junior Tag League. Seems a bit overkill. Well so far I've been a bit underwhelmed in terms of a New Japan show. Not that anything is bad but New Japan is just at such a high standard that a bunch of above average matches is noticeable. Well hopefully my spirit animal Tomohiro Ishii can boost up the show score against Kenta On Discord I would use the "Now This is Art" bot command to explain this match. Ishii is the embodiment of the New Japan Style of Wrestling. Japanese Strong Style. KENTA always had to win here though as you need to keep him strong until Wrestle Kingdom. He needs the title with the New Japan Audience to be invested in him. It will be hard for this to not be the match of the show though. I was close to giving this a 5 star match BUT KENTA got a little sloppy with his finisher at the end. Being that Bushi is the bottom of the totem pole in LIJ you tend to forget how good is actually is, so it is nice to get a reminder with this title shot But at the end of the day it is hard for Osperay to have a bad match let alone have an average match. But they turned it up with the mist spot this match and that in itself widens your eyes and fills you with elation. But I never saw Bushi winning this match but they had a few good near falls that had me question. Two Strong matches in a row...but we were left with a TIME BOMB. 16 month or so neck injury and we finally have one of the most charismatic wrestlers back in New Japan, Hiromu Takahashi. I'm giving a few extra points on the show score just for being able to see him healthy and ready to go. Man...I'm at such a high right now...and I now we have a main event in which I don't see how Goto wins here. If he does I'll start flipping tables and say this card is the most amazing thing since slice bread. It's a good match because of the people involved but Jay White is the top heel in the company. He is not going to not have a title going into Wrestle Kingdom. He is a really good heel too, you know how good he is but you still want to see him lose. The fans aren't going to get behind him, he is able to stay a full heel. Match of the Night: Tomohiro Ishii vs KENTA Show Score: 82 out of 100 This show ended up being around my expectations. Could of been even better if the Junior Tag League Final was a better structured match. Match 7 and 8 were the highlights of this show and some surprises in between kept the show in the 80 range overall. |

I watched Power Struggle and based on what you posted earlier I decided to start with Ishii vs. Kenta. Ishii continues to be a workhorse for NJPW and he's never had a bad match. Bushi vs. Ospreay stole the show for me with all those false finishes and near falls. I nerver took Bushi seriously because he is the one that eats pins for LIJ, but he looked good in this match. I'm glad that Himoru is back and I look forward to his comeback match at WK 14. Goto vs. Jay Whito was okay, but I was more interested in the aftermath of that match seeing Naito, Kota Ibushi(man crush), Jay White, and Okada in the ring together. I wonder if they are going to do a triple threat match at WK 14? |

@AddaeAkono So would you consider Bushi vs Ospreay a 5 star match or no? |

I would consider it a 5 star match and match of the night in my opinion. I also forgot to mention that Red Shoes took back to back ref bumps. |

So the teams for World Tag League looks like this. * Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa (IWGP Tag Team Champions) * David Finlay and Juice Robinson * Toru Yano and Colt Cabana * Zack Sabre Jr. and Taichi * Minoru Suzuki and Lance Archer * Hiroyoshi Tenzan and Satoshi Kojima * Togi Makabe and Tomoaki Honma * EVIL and SANADA * Shingo Takagi and El Terrible * Chase Owens and Bad Luck Fale * KENTA and Yujiro Takahashi * Tomohiro Ishii and YOSHI-HASHI * Hirooki Goto and Karl Fredericks * Manabu Nakanishi and Yuji Nagata * Hiroshi Tanahashi and Toa Henare * Jeff Cobb and Mikey Nicholls A lot of mish-mash teams. The Heavyweight Tag Division has been the most dead division all year. If there was a year to have G.O.D. win it would be this year. So I will guess Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa. I really don't want EVIL and SANADA to win for a 3rd straight year, it is just getting put back into the midcard for both of them. David Finlay and Juice Robinson would be nice for a return gift to Dojo Grad Finlay. |

TrashDax said: I like New Japan, but their tag division is horrible. I'm slightly behind in wrestling in general right now, but I plan on catching up with AEW & NWA this week and watch Power Struggle too. I also heard that the Suzuki-gun vs. Suzuki-gun match was fun, so Imma grab that one too I guess. Yeah the Heavyweight Tag Division took quite a hit this year. First losing the Best Friends to AEW. Then Davey Boy Smith leaving New Japan. Then the "attempt" to get Evil and Sanada more up the card yet they still didn't win any singles titles. I do love tag team wrestling though so I'm still enjoying myself. I do have New Japan World so I'll be watching every match. |

Final Day of World Tag League 2019 - 12/8/19 So I ended up watching this live last night but I was so tired at 5 A.M. in the morning that I felt I'd be more coherent writing thoughts about it tomorrow instead. So I didn't watch all the matches for the Tag League. I watched the beginning of the tour where there was only Japanese Commentary and the ending of the tour which had both Japanese and English Commentary. The rest of the matches were during house shows. I'm going to talk about the teams first that don't need to be in a spoiler and then the others that do. So the first this is Toru Yano and Colt Cabana was as entertaining together as you thought they would be. We did get to see them face off during the New Japan Cup earlier in the year. Which this is the follow-up to. Toru Yano is always the ultimate spoiler and there was a big impact this year one who they spoiled. Being that Jushin Liger has been having his retirement tour. No one else has been interfering with that announcing their own retirement but I fill Manabu Nakanishi will retire next year. The guy is close to being immobile in the ring now. At 52-years old his in-ring ability has completely cliffed. Yuji Nagata is starting to get there too. He was still competitive in 2016 but I believe we've gotten to the cliff point for him as well. Though Jushin Liger can still put on good matches when he is the one retiring =(. I don't want to make this too long so I will move into the Spoiler section now I originally said if there was a year for G.O.D to win it then it would of been this year but Colt Cabana playing spoiler early in the tour is the difference maker here on why G.O.D. wasn't even in the main event of the final show. I mentioned it would be a nice return gift for David Finlay and Juice Robinson to win it as Finlay was out with injury for almost the whole year. He is a Dojo graduate so even being a gaijin there is a level respect he has in the locker room. That title match for the U.S. Title could of been the gift. But being the one that Pins Evil to win the 2019 World Tag League...I was trying my best not to scream out of joy at 5 A.M. in the morning. Now this doesn't necessarily help elevate Juice but it doesn't bring Finlay up to Juice's level. I do not believe they will win the tag titles at Wrestle Kingdom though. My second favorite moment of the night was watching Kenta and Minoru Suzuki have strong style exchanges with each other but the biggest shock of the night...and having FinJuice win is a huge shock too. But I was not expecting Jon Moxley to come out from the crowd and attack Lance Archer and then challenge him to a death match. I really thought it was going to be Juice vs Archer at Wrestle Kingdom and he would get his belt back that way. But that also opened the door in my mind that they could actually win tag league. The Heavyweight Tag Division has been very sour for awhile. But they made the Tag League pretty special this year with the results. I'm going to give a Final Score to the whole tag league as a 77 out of 100. I would say Juice Robinson and David Finlay vs Evil and Sanada was also the match of the night based on in-ring quality. It was a nice 4-star level match. |

Archer/Moxley, Ospreay/Hiromu & Kenta/Goto should be geat matches. I am also interested in who they eventually put the two big belts on. Normally I'd say that Naito is the logical conclusion, but we all know he is never gonna get the spotlight, so it'll probably be Ibushi. As long as it's not Okada, I'm fine either way. Are you prepared to cry like a little girl after Ligers last match? I am. |

Wrestle Kingdom 14 Night One - 1/4/20 (Pre-show) Great Bash Heel (Tomoaki Honma and Togi Makabe), Yuya Uemura, and Yota Tsuji vs. Toa Henare, Alex Coughlin, Clark Connors, and Karl Fredericks The commentary mentioned that the first match of 2010s for New Japan had Kuzuchika Okada in it. So in 10 years we can comeback to this moment to see who has turned into the main eventers out of these 5 young lions in the ring. They gave the win here to Toa Henare, I can only pray and hope that this ends up being a breakout year for him. He isn't a young lion anymore. It is time for him to get his due. It is always fun though to see the L.A. Dojo vs Home Base Dojo as well. Tencozy (Hiroyoshi Tenzan and Satoshi Kojima) vs. Yuji Nagata and Manabu Nakanishi They said that it wouldn't be a Wrestle Kingdom without these four but at the same time the combined age in the right is over 200. You never know when it is going to be the last one for some of these guys. So it is just better to enjoy it. (Main-Show) Jyushin Thunder Liger, Tatsumi Fujinami, The Great Sasuke, and Tiger Mask (with El Samurai) vs. Naoki Sano, Shinjiro Otani, Tatsuhito Takaiwa, and Ryusuke Taguchi (with Kuniaki Kobayashi) We got a lot more action then I thought with this match. I had a blast watching all the legends. Speed and Power can be lost in time but technique is forever lasting Los Ingobernables de Japon (Evil, Sanada, Shingo Takagi, and Bushi) vs. Suzuki-gun (Minoru Suzuki, Taichi, Zack Sabre Jr., and El Desperado) Chaos (Hirooki Goto, Tomohiro Ishii, Toru Yano, and Yoshi-Hashi) vs. Bullet Club (Bad Luck Fale, Chase Owens, Kenta, and Yujiro Takahashi) The next two matches are set-up matches for what were going to see tomorrow in regards to title matches. A very New Japan type thing to do. Will see what happens tomorrow and if any of this really mattered. Thus I'm not putting much weight into these matches when it comes to the final show score Guerrillas of Destiny (Tanga Loa and Tama Tonga) (c) vs. FinJuice (Juice Robinson and David Finlay) Juice Robinson seems to have had some inspiration with The Village People performing on New Years with his WK attire. It really doesn't feel like an attire of a wrestler about to win the tag titles But...they damn well did it! This was my first getting up out of my chair moment and celebrating. This was a well paced match a well length match for the match to flow properly. This is a new beginning for the Heavyweight Tag Division with Juice Robinson and David Finlay now as the champions. Hopefully will have some new teams form in 2020 and really get this tag division back after their talent loses in 2019. Lance Archer (c) vs. Jon Moxley I guess we couldn't expect too much from the "deathmatch" title even though it is Japan. I doubt the Tokyo Dome would want light tubes and barb wire. So don't expect that from this match. What we did get was more a TLC match with a few other items. It was still a fun hardcore match but there was nothing deathmatch about it. Not that I really wanted to see a death match tonight. The match ended with a nice table spot and as you can guess. Moxley won the championship. Gedo tends to book a lot of title changes on Wrestle Kingdom and we are now 2 for 2 on that. Will Ospreay (c) vs. Hiromu Takahashi This is the match that were all waiting for on night one. The hype is through the roof and it makes me worried I'm too amped up for it. The next two matches feel more like Semi-Final matches with the double championship angle. They also said that the Junior Heavyweight Title has changed hands 6 straight times at the Tokyo Dome...and with Gedo booking... The match already starts like a deep rivalry match should. Psychology wise this is so on point. The big moves were used properly to get to this length of match. He tried for the Hidden Blade 3 times until he got it, Ospreay hits Stormbreaker and he isn't able to get the three count, Hiromu hits Time Bomb and Ospreay kicks out. They were talking about a new move before the match and it was that move that got the win. I don't believe he needed a new move and it wasn't anything too special. But this is still a 5-star match regardless. Jay White (c) vs. Tetsuya Naito Kazuchika Okada (c) vs. Kota Ibushi I'm in a state of euforia, that match put me in a state of wrestling nirvana. I ended up on the floor too at the end of the match. That is another match that has broken the Meltzer Scale. The Meltzer Scale HAS BEEN BROKEN AGAIN! After years and years of waiting we finally are going to have the conclusion to the arc of the Naito vs Okada feud that has been going on for 5+ years...Gedo he went 4 for 5 on title changes, he easily could of gone to 5 for 5. But it would the fans in a very peculiar position with two super fan favorites in the main event. Match of the Night: Kazuchika Okada(c) vs. Kota Ibushi Show Score: 92 out of 100 I came into this show thinking that Day 2 was going to surely be the better card. But after Will Ospreay vs. Hiromu Takahashi and Kazuchika Okada vs Kota Ibushi I have no idea. I gave this show a 92...that is an astounding score. The low point for me on Day 1 was Jon Moxley vs Lance Archer because it simply wasn't brutal enough for a deathmatch but I'd say it was a 78 out of 100 match. I need to have a card that has no major matches under 80. It can happen...and by god if it happens. I cannot skip out on New Years Dash. I'd need that encore show live baby. This is what Wrestle Kingdom is all about...that feeling you just went to valhalla. I can see Hana Kimura and Guilia waving at me right now. I love this entertainment medium and hope you all received the same amount of love tonight as I did. With that...I'm going to collapse on my bed. |

Wrestle Kingdom 14 Night Two - 1/5/20 The Most Violent Players (Togi Makabe and Toru Yano) and Ryusuke Taguchi (c) vs. Chaos (Tomohiro Ishii, Yoshi-Hashi, and Robbie Eagles) vs. Los Ingobernables de Japon (Evil, Shingo Takagi, and Bushi) vs. Suzuki-gun (Taichi, El Desperado, and Yoshinobu Kanemaru) vs. Bullet Club (Bad Luck Fale, Yujiro Takahashi, and Chase Owens) This is a nice way to get all the factions involved. I always feel this belt is better when one of the 4 factions hold it as it gives some purpose to the belt through faction rivalry. LIJ start off the night strong with recapturing these titles. It is actually Evil and Bushi's 4th time with the NEVER Trios titles. So it seems Evil won't be getting a singles push for awhile Jushin Thunder Liger and Naoki Sano (with Yoshiaki Fujiwara) vs. Hiromu Takahashi and Ryu Lee This was very interesting. It is so weird to see Hiromu get booed so much. But no one wanted to see Liger retire but time comes for everyone. Bullet Club (Taiji Ishimori and El Phantasmo) (c) vs. Roppongi 3K (Yoh and Sho) El Phantasmo has really done a great job giving us a true nasty heel in the Junior Heavyweight this year. Then Roppongi 3K keep winning things but they also continue to struggle to stay at the top I feel the usage of the baseball cups were very nice, especially doing it in the Tokyo Dome. It is something that I will remember from this match. Though that being said I have seen better matches by both teams so it wasn't too amazing but hopefully Roppongi 3K finally have a lengthy title reign. This is the 4th time they've held the titles but they only have 1 title defense. Zack Sabre Jr. (c) vs. Sanada I came into this thinking that Sanada might finally get his singles push but at the same time Zack only recently got the belt back from Tanahashi. Out of all the results the past two days the one I despise the most is this one because it was his time last year to finally make a push with a singles title and once again he has lost an opportunity. Eventually fans are going to lose hope and interest in the guy. Not to mention Zack could of gone on one of his political rants about Brexit getting approved and the worst Labour result since 1935. We got deprived of Sanada finally breaking through and great post-match interview. Jon Moxley (c) vs. Juice Robinson It would feel pretty weird if Juice Robinson got his own Double Dash and won the Tag Titles and United States Championship on the same night. But being that you never know how much Moxley is going to do in New Japan. That actually adds to the doubt he'll win which is a unique additive he has for New Japan It would also seem that Suzuki will not be leaving New Japan yet as he came out at the end of the match to choke out Moxley. This has been building for a bit when Moxley was feuding with Lance Archer in the lead up to their Wrestle Kingdom match last night. Going to be a fun time seeing Moxley vs Suzuki Kenta (c) vs. Hirooki Goto This is exactly what I needed after all those technical difficulties. Kenta to me has been the best in New Japan for 2019. I was most interested in him going into the G1 and the most interested after the G1. Then on every major show he was in a singles match he was a contender for match of the night. I'm not sure if I would call this match of the night but it was still very good strong style match. Everything was pretty clean and the exchanges were good but they weren't to the levels it needs to be for a 5 star match. Goto though was the one to win and now ties Ishii with the most reigns with the title with 5 Jay White (with Gedo) vs. Kota Ibushi This is pretty much a bronze medal match or 3rd place match. It was still pretty good but the ending dragged a bit. A lot of typical Gedo/Bullet Club shenanigans. I don't feel a match like that will ever garner a 5-star rating unless it is something really creative. Which this was more just typical affair of cheating. But being that Bullet Club lost all their titles during Wrestle Kingdom. They definitely needed a strong win to end the show but are still at the bottom of the totem pole now. Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Chris Jericho I really felt like Tanahashi was carrying Jericho. I don't know if it is age, I don't know if it is the weight, or maybe both. But he is feeling more and more like an old man each time I watch him. I'm actually really disappointed that Tanahashi lost. I really wanted to see a title match between Jericho and Tanahashi for the AEW Championship. I mean if AEW wants to make New Japan happier with them. Put the AEW Championship on Tanahashi but it doesn't seem like that is happening now. Kazuchika Okada (IWGP Heavyweight Champion) vs. Tetsuya Naito (IWGP Intercontinental Champion) If you know the story of this rivalry then you know what 99% the outcome would be but they still did a good job with false finishes I really wished that he would of won this match when he hit the Stardust Press. It would of been so poetically perfect and I would of put the 5-star match title on here. I'm undecided on that right now with what we got. I believe there was 3 Rain Makers hit, 3 Destinos hit. Mirrors yesterday with the amount of finishers needed to win the match but the emotional intensity doesn't touch the surface of yesterday. But it was a 5-star ending the show when KENTA came in and attacked Naito before his big celebration. Jay White earlier in the night said "There is always a plan" and 2 Titles, 1 Champion, 2 Bullets seems to be that plan. Kenta is the real "Masta Heater" of Bullet Club. Match of the Night: Kazuchika Okada (IWGP Heavyweight Champion) vs. Tetsuya Naito (IWGP Intercontinental Champion) Show Score: 88 out of 100 Night 1 was the better night overall. There was some matches like Zack Sabre Jr. (c) vs. Sanada and Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Chris Jericho that dragged the score under Night 1. But it could of been much lower if it wasn't for the main event and what happened after the main event. New Japan is starting off strong with what feuds were getting out of from Wrestle Kingdom 14 and it is off to New Beginning 2020. |

Alright then, time to share my thoughts on an exhausting (cause watched live for the first time) New Japan weekend: Wrestle Kingdom - Day 1 - Shame they couldn't show the girls wrestle, but at least Martina had a lot of fun according to her twitter. - The current Young Lions are very promising, too bad Shooter couldn't be here. - Good god Nakanishi, please, just stop. - The old guy match didn't do much for me, but I'm not familiar with most of them, so what the hell. Great for the Japanese fans to see them once more. - The multi-tag matches felt kinda weird, not what I am used to see at WK. Aside from that, the two days were filled quite well. - No Kaze ni Nare = MINUS FIVE STARS!!!!!!! - I almost turned insta gay for Juice with that look. - Tag title match was a little underwhelming, but I'm happy for Finlay. - Mox vs. Archer was fun, if pretty goofy. - Hiromu and Ospreay delivered everything one could hope for (and nobody even died). Easily best match of the year so far. ***** - I enjoy Whites heelwork, it's certainly different from what the other top guys are doing. - No nonsense Ibushi is awesome. This was the most fun I had with an Okada match in a long time. Wrestle Kingdom - Day 2 - I don't mind the 6-Man belts, but they were way too underutilised last year. I hope this changes in 2020. - I still miss the Rambo though. - When Liger stayed down for the count, my heart dropped. My NJPW World stream did too. - Junior tag match was fun, I wish there were more teams so we didn't have Roppongi be champs again and again (not that I hate them, I just want variety). - I enjoy myself some good ol catch style and ZSJ and Sanada did very well. It's a pity though, despite so many high profile matches last year, absolutely nothing came out of it for Sanada. - Mox vs. Juice was okay, but pretty forgettable. But Mox vs. MiSu? My body won't ever be ready! - I enjoy new heel Kenta, he seems to have the time of his life. Match was fine, but Goto just doesn't click with me. Oh well, at least he isn't Yoshi-Hashi. - Jericho still has it, but only for AEW standards. The New Japan style is too much for him at this point. Still a fun match. - You can pretty much copy my comments about White and Ibushi from Day 1 here. - HE DID IT! HE FINALLY DID IT! FUCK YES!!! NOOO, FUCK YOU KENTAAAA!!!!! AAHHHHH!!!!!! [/mark] New Year Dash - I was hoping for a little bit more than just new challengers, but we shouldn't forget that New Japan has been 11/10 over the past couple of years and not hang our expectations too high. This was still a good show, especially Goto/Ishii vs. Shingo/Evil. - I almost made it through Ligers retirement ceremony without crying. Almost... Thank you Liger. You were there when I started watching wrestling in 1993. When the Monday Night Wars came, you were one of the fantastic Cruiserwheights in WCW that showed things I never thought possible. You were there when I discovered Puroresu. You were there on the very first wXw show I attended in 2014, proving you aged like good wine. It felt like you would always be there, but it seems all good things must come to an end. I am happy for you, going out on your own terms and in good health. ありがとうございました 獣神サンダー・ライガー! Oh my, I've got somthing in my eyes again... |

I want to write some thoughts on the New Beginning Tour before the main show this weekend. Basically anything with Shingo Takagi, EVIL, Hiroki Goto, or Tomohiro Ishii was the height of the tour. I can never get bored of these guys exchanging with each other. Both title matches involving these four on February 1st and February 6th are both 4 star matches in my eyes. At the beginning of the tour they were giving a good amount of wins to Toa Henare and Robbie Eagles. But with anything with Toa Henare that fizzles out quickly. He is still only 27 but I've been watching him for years already it feels. He is just always going to be a undercard guy? As for Robbie Eagles him winning matches were more to build the seeds of doubt about LIJ retaining the titles. This did make him look like a bigger competitor in the junior heavyweight division but the Asian Mist is always a nullifier. But one of the biggest things about these shows is this is the last month will be able to watch Manabu Nakanishi in the ring. So I'm trying to get as much enjoyment I can out of the last batch of his matches. I'll definitely miss his theme song. |

New Beginnings in Osaka - 2/9/20 Tencozy (Hiroyoshi Tenzan and Satoshi Kojima), Yuji Nagata, and Manabu Nakanishi vs. Taguchi Japan (Tomoaki Honma, Togi Makabe, Toa Henare, and Ryusuke Taguchi) This match was just to give the fans another chance to see Nakanishi on a PPV for the last time. All the Dads are almost 50 now so you never know how many matches will get from everyone. Though Kojima looks the best out of all them mobility wise. Personally I'm just happy Hanare didn't take the pin Roppongi 3K (Sho and Yoh) (c) vs. Suzuki-gun (Yoshinobu Kanemaru and El Desperado) I got into the second half of the match. So I guess that is a positive. Though I do feel there were a few mistakes by Sho during the match. It was more fun to see Taguchi and Rocky challenge Roppongi 3K. I don't know if that match will be that great since Sho and Yoh can be hit or miss for me. But it is a fun development Kota Ibushi and Taguchi Japan (Hiroshi Tanahashi, David Finlay, and Juice Robinson) vs. Bullet Club (Chase Owens, Yujiro Takahashi, Tanga Loa and Tama Tonga) I was disappointed that GoD won the titles back so soon. I just don't feel like they need it right now and it just feels stale with them as champions of the division. Where do we go from here? Even if they end up putting the titles on Tanahashi and Kota Ibushi it will just be a short term main event tag team. New Japan really needs to consider signing some heavyweight tag teams. I rather The Revival join New Japan. They would have better matches that fit their style and they would be much better utilized because there is an opening for them. AEW has tons of Tag Teams already. Tanahashi got the pin so they will face GoD next, you'd think it will be a title defense for GoD because it is a make-shift tag team but there is a lack of interest at least for me with GoD holding the belts right now. Chaos (Kazuchika Okada and Will Ospreay) vs. Suzuki-gun (Taichi and Zack Sabre Jr.) This was a fun match. But man...if WIll Ospreay fails to win the British Heavyweight Championship again next week. Taking about stale champions. Zack Sabre Jr basically is the title belt at this point. We most likely won't be seeing Okada vs Taichi for awhile though with how quickly he was disposed by Okada, or at least we shouldn't Jay White vs. Sanada Jay White is the top heel in New Japan...well Kenta did a good job to challenge him on that with what he did at Wrestle Kingdom. But Sanada is one of those guys that continues to not get his push higher up the card and this doesn't feel like a match to do it either as maybe it was with having Sanada win the British Heavyweight Championship back at Wrestle Kingdom. They need to get the LiJ fans nervous and what better way to do that then having the No2 guy fall to Jay White. It was the typical Sanada is not going to win this match move where he has the skull end and then he gives up on it because the other person isn't tapping and he goes up for his moonsault and misses. I've seen him do this ALL THE TIME. This was a good match though. I'd say a 4-star match. Jay White is always really good with the vocals during the match to keep the heat on him. Hiromu Takahashi (c) vs. Ryu Lee Chopamania is going wild! Obviously this has more anticipation because of the injury form that botched move by Ryu Lee to Takahashi back in 2018. It will be curious to see how dangerous they will get this match. They started it pretty fun but pretty safe. Didn't take too long to get dangerous though O_O. They teased the Phoenix Plex a few times but they never did the move. Even though the match was long it was a very decisive win for Hiromu Takahashi. That might of cost a 5-star from me to be honest because the two Time Bombs came in quick succession and it took a little out of me when the match was over instead of being amazed by an amazing match. So I'd say this was a 4 1/2 star match. The PPV is really rolling now with the heavy hitter matches...and no I'm not trying to make a pun there XD. Jon Moxley (c) vs. Minoru Suzuki That match had some crazy moments. I'm really hoping this can be even crazier, which might be why the last match wasn't. I'll find out in about 20-30 minutes. We got Suzuki with chairs. We got Suzuki with guard rails. Normal Suzuki things to start the match. We got Moxley with the biting. We got Moxley with tables. Normal Moxley things to start the match. Then they both grab a piece of the broken table and smash their own heads with it XD. It was a fun match but there wasn't a moment like when he faced Lance Archer and went through those two tables with a 6'10 guy. So don't expect something too crazy but I can still say this is 3 4 star level matches in a row. Tetsuya Naito (c) vs. Kenta Tetsuya Naito isn't really a 5-star type talent for me in-ring. Its a lot more his character that drives him for me. Kenta though was my MVP for 2019. He made a big push for 2020 as well. Can this main event blow me away? The first thing is, you have all of Bullet Club come out to this match and the faction that is all about Unity LIJ doesn't respond. I get he is the face in this match but that would of been epic to see a lumberjack scenario. I was disappointed. In the end no Bullet Club members started at ring side so with all the shenanigans can we get to the damn match? Nope Kenta rolls out of the ring. It takes around 15+ minutes in total for this match to even start and at 5:30 A.M. in the morning this is just annoying even though I know what they are doing...but its rough for us North Americans. I'm falling asleep here. I don't think that is what Go2SleeoClub means. Any chance of a 5 star I think is gone from that. Too much. The crowd is HOT though. Anything Kenta does they are groaning hard. I feel like this is the type of match that needs to be watched twice to fully appreciate. You had my real time thoughts in the spoilers because I was caught off guard with how the match started. But there is obviously an art to it and this match was more for the people in the crowd than it was for the viewers at home. Kenta had the crowd in the palm of his hands and for that I will say the match salvaged itself to a 4 start match at the end. I might consider watching it again tomorrow. As it stands... Match of the Night: Hiromu Takahashi (c) vs. Ryu Lee Show Score: 80 out of 100 |

Looking at the Match Stats from Pro Wrestling Musings Hiromu Takahashi vs Ryu Lee https://twitter.com/PWMusings/status/1226871771615387648 I love the Match Offense percentage here because it resembles that match so well until the end. Jon Moxley vs Minoru Suzuki https://twitter.com/PWMusings/status/1226871801969549312 When you look at this it makes you think that Suzuki did all he could to win but Moxley is just that resilient. Tetsuya Naito vs Kenta https://twitter.com/PWMusings/status/1226871838845865992 I love that Kenta has double the taunts, double the fouls. That is probably true for a lot of Bullet Club matches. |

So an update on 5-star ratings Dave Meltzer gave Hiromu Takahashi vs Ryu Lee a ****¾, I am guessing the quick finish costs them a 5-star match like it did with me but I was more at a ****½. Surprisingly though Jon Moxley vs Minoru Suzuki was given a ****½ by Dave. I only had that at a solid ****, but we also both agreed that Tetsuya Naito vs Kenta was a ****. But no 5-star matches from Dave, no 5-star matches from me. If you had a 5-star match from The New Beginning in Osaka (2020) please do leave a comment about it and I'll add it to the header post ^.^. |

I just realized I haven't yet written anything about the New Beginning Shows. Hiromu/Lee were born do die fighting each other. The match was anything as good as one could hope it would be, I'd say ****¾ is justified. Just shy from a five star bout. I especially loved Lee teasing the move that broke Hiromu's neck, dunno what it's called. Moxley/MiSu was the most brutal match I have seen in NJPW in a while. I enjoy Moxley in New Japan a lot, it's just a shame that he's "just" a special attraction. Last year I was under the assumption Naito gave a couple of lackluster performances, which he did, but I did not know it was due to health issues. Now that he's healed up again, his matches are so much more worthwhile. Kenta is a fantastic heel and I hope he will be getting another prominent title shot soon. I mean, sooner or later you'll need to re-seperate the IC and Hebi-Q belts again. I'd love to see him with the Intercontinental Championship. The Osaka show was a very strong "B-PPV". I was pretty hyped for the New Japan Cup, but as things are now, we'll have to see how, when or even if it will take place. |

Just some short thoughts about the New Japan Cup. During the rounds Dave Meltzer gave Hiromu vs Ishii a 4 3/4 star match. Then he also gave Minoru Suzuki vs Yugi Nagata and Soh vs Takagi 4 1/2 star matches. Which in my opinion as well was the three match matches in the tournament prior to the finals. I was pretty close to giving that match a 5 star match as well. But being that there wasn't much history between the two I held back with a 4.5 myself. That being said if Juice Robinson got that win over Ishii in the G1 last year I would of given that a 5 star match and Hiromu actually won so. I don't know XD. As for the finals I am going to pull the trigger on a 5 star match between Kazuchika Okada vs EVIL. There was so much detail to this match in terms of in-ring psychology and using moments from the previous matches in the tournament to lead up to the final climax. That climax being the The Ascension of EVIL is here, but it won't be for LIJ it will be for the Bullet Club. This was a really good Heel turn because Bullet Club helping could of very well just been convenience. So I wasn't expecting it. I would of hoped with the vicious level that EVIL had been adopting he would of joined Suzuki-gun instead. They are pretty thin right now and once the other members of the roster are able to come back to the shows there is going to be three guns pointing at Naito with Jay White, KENTA, and EVIL. I am going to give out a few pings to a couple of you to announce that I am posting again. If both of you have watched any of the New Japan Cup. What are your thoughts? @TrashDax @AndoCommando |

New Japan Cup was interesting, especially given that it was done in an empty arena for the most part. I honestly don't think the typical NJPW match style over the last few years works that well in such an environment. There's no crowd able to fill the silence during rest periods and opening segments. Some matches were an exception (Suzuki vs Nagata is probably the best example) but like with AEW and WWE, it just isn't the same. Another interesting aspects came at how gaijin wrestlers were replaced by Jr. Heavyweights and Young Lions. I found this really great, playing up the whole Heavyweight/Jr. Heavyweight dynamic while still giving us some great matches. My personal favourite of the tournament was Shingo Takagi vs SHO from the first round, but I also really enjoyed the dynamics between Ishii and Desperado/Takahashi, the latter I believe was the MVP of the tournament and a frontrunner for my wrestler of the year so far. As for the finals, I hate to be a downer but I really did not like the match. I noticed some callbacks to their previous matches in G1 tournaments and how EVIL would go to any lengths in order to win was put into practice this whole tournament, but I wasn't really impressed by either wrestler here. Maybe it's just me but Okada's been gradually becoming more complacent and rigid in his style since late 2017-2018 and here I thought Okada was almost on autopilot the entire time. There was barely any impact behind his strikes and dropkicks, he stopped selling the arm EVIL worked over once he regained momentum, clapped before half his moves for some reason, etc. Also he's using the Cobra Clutch again. I didn't like it back when he and Naito were feuding at WK12 and I really don't like when and how he uses it in his matches. I wish he'd just go back and use Red Ink more but he seems committed to making the Clutch a core part of his moveset. EVIL had a solid outing but his methods of winning (2 ref bump, Darkness Falls into a pile of chairs, Bullet Club interference, a total of 4 low blows) I don't think make him look like a legitimate contender. I thought the purpose of this match would be to make EVIL look strong as he would go on to face Naito for both belts and when it ended, I didn't think it succeeded. Holy crap they actually went with EVIL lmao. Naito fans are forever in despair lol |

Well even going to sleep, I am still shock when I wake up with how Dominion went. @AndoCommando I'm not too into the Cobra Clutch either. If they did go with Okada vs Sanada in the finals maybe it would of made more sense. Gives Okada something to compete submission wise with the Skull's end. But of course EVIL stole that all away. As for your comment about him looking strong. Clearly that isn't the motive. The motive is EVIL is Bullet Club, Bullet Club is EVIL. He is going to be the most vile wrestler in New Japan now. Bullet Club is going to be more vile of a faction in New Japan then ever before. PURE EVIL has ascended on New Japan. Craig already has his match stats up and there was 25 fouls in the title match. It will be interesting to see how someone conquers Darkness Falling over the IWGP Title. https://twitter.com/PWMusings/status/1282322175769415680 |

I love that New Japan was willing to pull this shocker, not only the turn of EVIL but also putting the straps on him. For so many years now the IWGP title holders were a small elite and getting in there was next to impossible. It felt like NJPW wasn't even trying to push anybody to that next level, most obvious in the many, many, MANY losses of Sanada, who by now has lost all momentum. That said, I don't think EVIL is a good choice for the title. As much as I like this guy in a hoss fight, his matches with Okada as well as his match with Naito were way below the quality I am used to. He just isn't made to have 30+ minutes spectaculars. Of course I wouldn't mind at all if they just cut down the length of these matches, but that will not happen. Another problem I see is his turn towards Bullet Club. I would have preferred if him and Dick Togo would've done their own thing, maybe build a stable on their own, but putting a serious guy like EVIL in a group of silly hipsters is very weird. Then there's the issue that they now have three alpha males with EVIL, KENTA and Jay White. The only way this can possibly go is the implosion of Bullet Club, and if that's the end goal, I don't mind. The other two title matches were very strong. Taichi has finally found the perfect role for him in his team with ZSJ and SHO looked like a star against Shingo. I look forward to his match with Desperado, who is one of the most underrated guys on the roster imho. If I had to pick, I'd say the tag team bout was my match of the weekend. Sadly, it also showed me that Tanahashi desperately needs to retire soon. His movements are slowly reaching Nakanishi level and it just hurts to watch. Also, Master Wato is incredibly meh. |

As much as I talk down on EVIL in terms of being a good main eventer, I have to give it to him, the match with Hiromu was amazing. I was actually considering the *****, but the ending kinda ruined it a little for me. Shingo/Despy was a bit disappointing, cause I know they both can do better than that. Okada/Yujiro was just there, though I somewhat enjoyed seeing the Tokyo Pimp in a singles match. Looks like he'll be in the G1 at this point and I'm not complaining. The fact that Uemura went almost 10 minutes with Ishimori is probably a sign that he's ready to move up. Just disregard the excursion, put him in the G1 and let him have a win on the final block day against somebody like Kojima or Yoshi-Hashi. |

Summer Struggle in Jingu - 8/29/20 KOPW Tournament: El Desperado vs. Toru Yano vs. Sanada vs. Kazuchika Okada Now I'm not going to put weight of this match in my ratings because I only caught the last 5 minutes but I had a feeling.... That Yano would do a Yano and win Shingo Takagi (c) vs. Minoru Suzuki for the NEVER Openweight Championship There was a lot of good exchanges here between their moves that made the match better than just a normal match between them. Minoru Suzuki is 52 years old but can still go...so I guess that is all that matters. Though it does sting a bit that Shingo Takagi's amazing run with the title ended against a 52 year old. LIJ's downfall continues...will the downfall be complete or will there be a silver lining at the end of this show Hiromu Takahashi (c) vs. Taiji Ishimori for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship Man....this is hurting my soul man The downfall is just continuing for LIJ and they have officially lost EVERYTHING. The match was fine but nothing big event special Dangerous Tekkers (Taichi and Zack Sabre Jr.) (c) vs. Golden☆Ace (Hiroshi Tanahashi and Kota Ibushi) for the IWGP Tag Team Championship Well this match didn't start off the best because I am not a fan of blending Tanahashi's and Ibushi's themes together. The match was picking up at the end but Chris mentioned there was no title defenses in 2020, I mentioned that to Addae before the match started and it would seem that we have our first title defense with the double high fly flow not being able to be completed and the darkness continuing to fall over New Japan. Evil (c) vs. Tetsuya Naito for the Double Championship Well so far tonight we have had all the bad guys win or heels if you want to call them. So if EVIL does defend his championship that would mean all the bad guys won in the title matches tonight as well as the other two matches. I would still consider Yano a bad guy even though he is a comedy bad guy. During the match we were getting the normal Bullet Club affair. EVIL shoving the referee around. Dick Togo hitting Naito. Low blows. I was getting worried that this match wouldn't accomplish anything. But for the first time we saw two LIJ members come out to help Naito and they dragged Gedo and Dick away from the ring. My thought was okay well isn't Jado going to come out next? But we actually got a 1v1 and EVIL has never been built as a strong champion so it is either he still finds a way to cheat, he actually gets a clean pinfall against Naito to establish himself, or Naito wins the titles back. Naito does win the titles back and Chris on commentary mentioned that were done with double championship matches and Naito win defend that separately. I HOPE SO. I am really done with these double championship matches and with the foreigners still not able to travel these cards need both a Heavyweight Championship match and a Intercontinental Championship match. This card was good, but it wasn't great. New Japan tends to be great. Match of the Night: Shingo Takagi (c) vs. Minoru Suzuki Show Score: 79 out of 100 I really hope the foreigners can travel soon or New Japan brings in some new domestic faces for the G1. There is only so much more you can do with these limited rosters. But as long as were progressing from these double championship matches, I can look at the positives and continue to enjoy the product around the same level as always. |

Master Wato kinda sucks tbh. I don't get what New Japan is trying to do with the KOPW thing. Is this supposed to bring in sports entertainment fans? I dunno, that's just not what I personally wanna see from this company. Too bad Shingos reign came to an end, but Suzuki was the best possible guy to do so. He is still as fit as anybody else on the roster and he desperately needed a little push before he starts fading into obscurity. Easily match of the night of course. The Jr. Heabyq title change seemed odd. Why would you take the belt away from Hiromu? What are we supposed to be expecting from Ishimori? Good thing ZSJ & Taichi defended, I'm starting to love the team. Ibushi & Tanahashi will probably be the next contenders for Naitos belts. Now that he's no longer champ, what are you gonna do with Evil? They already did absolutely nothing with Jay White, so my hopes are limited. I hope the gaijin come back soon and we get a Bullet Club implosion story. |

Then I shall make one as well. Day 1 - Suzuki vs. Ishii Day 2 - Naito vs. Tanahashi Day 3 - Ospreay vs. Ishii (did they just tease a Taichi turn or am I seeing things?) Day 4 - Naito vs. ZSJ Day 5 - Ibushi vs. Ishii Day 6 - Kenta vs. ZSJ Day 7 - Ishii vs. Shingo Day 8 - Tanahashi vs. Yoshi-Hashi (looks like Goto is injured for real) Impressions thus far: + Overall match quality is great, there are very few lowlights + The table looks like it went through a randomizer, this is really cool, nobody is running away or out of the picture yet + Yoshi-Hashi has improved so much this year and he continues to do so + Taichis character arc is fantastic + Suzuki is back in G1, he was dearly missed last year - Ospreay, aside from being a piece of shit human being, is so incredibly annoying, his are the only backstage interviews I skip - Sanada at this point has to be considered "the next big thing" forever, there is no improvement and no push Day 9 - Ishii vs. Taichi Day 10 - Naito vs. Yoshi-Hashi Day 11 - Shingo vs. Ibushi Day 12 - Naito vs. Juice Day 13 - Ibushi vs. Suzuki Day 14 - Goto vs. Tanahashi I think I may be a little too reluctant to give 5 stars, but I wanna reserve them for the very, very best. Also, if you haven't yet, watch KENTAs backstage interviews, there's a hilarious storyline going on. Day 15 - Okada vs. Ishii Day 16 - Sanada vs. Tanahashi Day 17 - Ishii vs. White That Ospreay turn was long overdue. With this and Bullet Club about to implode (and maybe Taichi taking over Suzuki-gun? Who knows), New Japan factions are getting shaken up a lot, which is a good thing. I am now calling Ibushi vs. EVIL with Ibushi winning. Day 18 - Kenta vs. Naito |

Seems we already have what is be 90% of the Power Struggle Card. If we are going to continue the 6 match format going forward that is. Toru Yano vs Zack Saber Jr. for the Trophy Minoru Suzuki vs Shingo Takagi for the NEVER Kuzuchika Okada vs The Great O-Khan To get to Will KENTA vs Hiroshi Tanahashi for U.S. Briefcase Kota Ibushi vs Jay White for G1 Briefcase Tetsuya Naito vs EVIL for Double Champ Two briefcase matches makes me go ugggh, and another Naito vs EVIL match makes me go bang my head against the wall. So I don't know how Power Struggle will be but the name of the show definitely represents the card. |

I have to say, Sanada managed to put on some neat matches at the end, but headlining Wrestle Kingdom would be way too early for him, Ibushi is the right choice. Him and Naito will (maybe literally) kill each other and have an amazing match. Since i have only noted my matches of the night, let's see who got the most (minus the final day): 7 - Ishii 5 - Naito 4 - Tanahashi 3 - Ibushi 2 - Shingo, Suzuki, Kenta, ZSJ, Yoshi-Hashi 1 - Ospreay, White, Okada, Taichi, Sanada, Goto, Juice 0 - Cobb, Yujiro, Evil, Yano |

Power Struggle - 11/7/20 Zack Sabre Jr. vs Toru Yano - KOPW 2020 Trophy So here is some quick thoughts on the night. When it comes to Yano matches this was one of the upper-end since ZSJ made Yano have to wrestle for about 10 minutes. Then ending of the match was a great rendition of a typical Yano shenanigans. So I rather enjoyed myself. Shingo Takagi vs Minoru Suzuki - NEVER Openweight Championship We then had the match I was looking forward to the most and while there wasn't much out of the ordinary this match. Strong Style always prevails in providing the fill you need from New Japan. The memorable moment from this match actually came after the match Suzuki actually showed a good amount of weakness at the end of this match. He was almost unable to get back to the locker room on his own and we all know that he tends to always go back on his own power but he just laid on the concrete for few minutes. This match also felt like it could of gone 5 more minutes. He also stayed around Jushin Thunder Liger for a bit and if you remember last year this is around the time where he was fueding with Jushin saying a man who cannot fight anymore is not a pro wrestler. This could be the first sign of Minoru looking at retirement and its crazy to think about because he hasn't lost a step but...maybe his body is telling him different... Great-O-Khan vs Kazuchika Okada This was truly the first true taste of how good The Great-O-Khan is and I felt he could of used a few more moves to his arsenal but maybe that will come in time. Will Ospreay didn't have his hidden blade his entire tenure in New Japan. Hopefully will get some more variation in the coming year because what he does have now is smooth. There is a lot of promise here. But that being said...in his current state he is not ready to beat Okada clean. Maybe not even Ishii clean or Goto clean. This isn't Okada 2.0. This of course was all to set-up our Wrestle Kingdom match between Will Ospreay and Kuzuchika Okada and even though he is MoneyClip Okada...it still might be one of the best matches of Wrestle Kingdom. Kenta vs Hiroshi Tanahashi There was around a 2-3 minute exchange of moves in this match that I really enjoyed but nothing else really stood out for me. What stood out was KENTA's Air Bass and Air Piano. We saw Tanahashi get tapped out again too. This might be him continuing to fall down the card at 43 years old. Jay White vs Kota Ibushi Oh boi...well 2020 has been quite the year and Gedo has been doing things he has never done before. I'm actually not stunned because someone winning two G1s in a row is already a non-Gedo like booking decision. So if there was ever a time to have someone lose a briefcase, which is another non-Gedo like booking decision. It is tonight, and I'll go cry in a corner now. Tetsuya Naito vs Evil - Double Championship I NEED EVIL OUT OF THE MAIN EVENT. Concentrating on this match was a difficult task. There was nothing different here that we haven't seen in the last few matches between these two. There was same low blows. There was the same chair shots. There was the same ref bumps. There was the same Dick Togo. There was the same run-ins like during Summer Struggle. Ultimately it felt like Vince Russo was booking this match and it is one of the worst main events I've experienced with New Japan. Being that I was mainly on twitter most of the time during this match, I know I'm not alone. How New Japan treats there referees is souring a lot Western fans on the product. Their domestic fans? Don't know, translators don't understand syntax. Then when I finally thought we were going to get something good out of this ordeal tonight. Ibushi is out there. The briefcase is only for the Heavyweight Title. But there is no announcement of different title matches for each title on the two Wrestle Kingdom dates when Jay White is talking about taking the 4th off in his promo. I am so sick of these Double Championship matches. I am so sick of EVIL matches. This Double Championship run is more going to be remembered by my time with EVIL than Tetsuya Naito. AEW does a creek in the door to pass New Japan as my favorite company. Its a slight creek but EVIL is creating it. Match of the Night: Shingo Takagi vs Minoru Suzuki Show Score: 66 out of 100 I might be going a bit rough on my overall rating but the main event does hold a lot of weight to the scoring and when I look at what we've gained and lost from tonight. It does feel like a down for me. Even with me being a bit more on a positive note for Zack Sabre Jr. vs Toru Yano and Great-O-Khan vs Kazuchika Okada. They both have a ceiling for how good they can actually be. So its just not enough to pull the show back from the major matches on the card. Grappl wise I'm at a mean star rating for 3.25, so that is basically a B Block Day from the G1. So its a bit kinder scoring there. |

I have to be perfectly honest, Power Struggle somewhat bored me a little. There were a couple nice matches, like Shingo/Suzuki or Tanahashi/Kenta, but I think I suffer from a Post-G1 burnout. NJPW matches are very formulaic, which isn't a problem if you have a big event every 6-8 weeks, but when you watch match after match after match it gets tiresome. My hype for Wrestle Kingdom is comparatively low this year. |

Goto/Yoshi-Hashi were easily my favorite team in Tag League this year. Goto's move set works so much better in Tag Competition and I hope they keep teaming in 2021. I had a three way tie in the BOSJ for the Bronze Podium. First I checked what was the highest match and there was two of them with a 4 star. So then I looked at what was their lowest rated matcg. El Desperado thus had an edge on Robbie Eagles. Douki and Yuya Uemura really broke out this year as well. |
