I have taken to only watching series that are far enough ahead or completed. I can't take the once a week deal!

The only time I have paced myself with anime is with One Piece. But frankly, it wasn't worth it. If you want to watch a lot of an anime, by all means, go all out! If I hate to wait every week for a new Detective Conan, it would drive me insane! (Mostly because I am not caught up at all with Detective Conan)

I generally prefer to know that I can watch the complete anime whenever I want without having to wait weeks for it to finish.

But then again.
Watching one episode per week makes it easy for you to discuss in a more active manner with other people who are watching it at the same time.
Maybe you just got so excited that you can't keep your mouth shut about it or something. Too bad for you if the anime is old and other people's shared excitement has calmed down.

interesting Q. i think the more relaxed the storyline is, the more better to pace it out (if of course if its good). but if the storyline is really exciting - i tend to throw pacing out the window and watch like a hawk til the end.

I think the better question for this thread would be this:

Is pacing yourself better to retaining the quality of the story over rapid episode succession?

And to answer that question, it's still rather subjective. I'll compare it to my love of reading books.

When I read a book I seem to form a movie in my head of all the characters doing whatever it is they're doing amongst the setting the author has set forth. In a book, the story is pretty continuous. There are obvious stopping points...but for me when I reach those points I'm already quite engrossed in the story and I wish to see more. An anime series is very similar to that I believe. Each episode is like the chapter of a book. They can vary in flow in how the episode previously connects to the following episodes. Sometimes they pick right up where the previous one end, or sometimes they start an entirely new arc. In either case you wish to continue because the story has you intrigued.

That feeling can happen in any kind of genre really...and I believe may be more affected by your personal tastes than anything the creators did. If you're an action junkie then the stories with lots of action may grab you while those who are romance junkies will be drawn to the next heart wrenching episode.

I suppose the idea of "pacing" yourself really comes down to wanting to control your desires and putting off a story that just doesn't seem to grab your attention. Also...when it comes to anime airing on TV it's mostly a marketing ploy and a way to also test the wind. When a series starts they may be a few episodes ahead in production...the final episodes not even on the radar of creation by that point. They do that mostly to not waste resources. If the show is a bust...why waste all the resources in finishing it? So naturally following it like TV isn't necessarily the best choice either.

To each their own I suppose though. For me it ends up being mostly about time. During the week I can probably get in 2-3 episodes an evening while on the weekend I can easily binge a single season series.

Well I suppose ts better to pace yourself, since watching a show to fast can ruin it, it determines on the show though. I think its ok to watch several episodes if their in the middle of a two parter fight or something like that. You kinda need the time gap to think about things, sometimes a show is too long to do that and you want to catch up to the latest episodes so then its ok because its hard to remember so much over a long amount of time.

I have to wonder why people think you have to think about an episode after you just watched it instead of moving on to the next.

Honestly...it isn't that tough to figure out what's going on. Sure there are some subtleties and that lends itself to rewatchable status. But I have to see it as this. I just recently watched all of Black Lagoon in pretty much 1 go, took me 3 days. It's a great series with awesome action and even some great subtle subplots...but my question in regards to pacing based upon pondering is...what is there to ponder in Black Lagoon? What is there to really ponder in any story when you're only at the starting or mid points? The pondering should really come after you've watched the entire story and have the full picture.

If you can't watch the entire story at once because it's still airing...then it's perfectly acceptable to ponder the latest episode. That pondering is usually an attempt to figure out how the story will progress to the next though. Yet if you have the next episode why ponder about it when you can far more easily watch it and also be more time efficient with it too. This way you won't so easily lose yourself in the 40 stories you're indulging in because you've chosen to take your time with each of them.

Possibly...but not even then. I could understand maybe taking a 20 minute break to think about it. Your mind is overloaded with the input you just recived from one episode shouldn't take all day to process though. So I then repeat...why pace yourself at one a day or one a week? Maybe not all back to back with not even a 5 minute break...but pacing yourself day by day or week by week just to ponder what may have been "deep" or "psychological" comes down to sheer insanity.

I admit to watching an episode and needing to lay down afterwards for a bit to gathering up my thoughts. I always end up going back to the story after about 20 minutes and watching more if my schedule allows.

So I suppose I'll state here that pacing is actually just an act of insanity. Why bother to pace yourself unless your schedule doesn't allow for heaving binging? If you have the time and make the time to watch anime...why not just watch as much of the story at once instead of putting it off. The idea of getting more enjoyment out of pacing yourself is, as I repeat, sheer insanity.

I like following a few anime series that are airing weekly, that way you can take one at a time, and watch something in between should you run out of something to watch.
That's how I roll anyway, and I've become a real slacker at watching anime lately :/ end up seeing an average of 1-2 episodes/ day.

I completely understand having to put off an anime due to lack of released epsodes. I follow a number of the currently airing series myself and have to wait a full week or more for subs to be released. I do want them to come out faster though if i had my way, but I don't.

I also have nearly a 100 unwatched anime series stored on my external HDDs and I know that if I picked one up to watch it I could watch the entire series at once instead of weekly.

If given the choice of watching as much of the series at once over one a week I'd most assuredly choose watching a batch over a single episode. That said I know full well you can't do that with currently airing series and so in reality I exclude them from this thought process since they aren't really allowing you the choice of binging.

When I watch seasonly animes I usually get stuck because i lack the time and i get like 15 watching that I rarely touch. So Iv'e decided fro example to delay this seson, and watch what I want in July. Right now I'm in the process of completing all of my watching\on hold stuff. and cuz it's over is a lot of fun marathoning it.

Unless I am forced to because the new episodes are still coming out, I don't do it.
I usually try to finish the stuff I want to as fast as possible, like 3 days, if I really like it.

the lovely thing about anime is that unlike normal tv shows and movies you generally prefer watching, theres a huge selection of things to watch and you can never manage to finish it all with your spare time since new series and episodes come out daily and there are older ones which you have yet to watch.

unless your very specific with a genre or the artistic style of an anime that you can only watch anime that have only been released post 2000 then pacing your self should not be an issue since you have many assortments of things to watch. If its a specific anime you have the option for it to complete or watching it in between the release of a few episodes or weekly whatever suits you.

personally unless I have to wait longer than 6 months for a series to complete it self i will not wait around and watch it.I prefer completing my anime in one swoop so that the plot stays fresh in my mind as i slowly finish it rather than waiting week after week waiting in suspense of what will happen next. Ofcourse this sense of suspense only occurs with the really good series so if I am watching an average to above average series i will wait for its completion and then watch it in one go

most animes is fine if you just smash right thru it back to back episodes

but a few animes with HEAVY cliffhanger will lose some meaning if you bum rush thru them

but those are rare, so just bumrush thru it all

For me 1 episode per week is great 'cause i like to mentally rewatch the episode, make my own theories about it and stuff. But i also like to Marathon in fast paced animes such as Hajime no Ippo :P
