Two small details that I keep wanting to mention but keep not having a good place to are that I like the touch that Tsuru has history with the Don Quixote family like this, her and her lady crew seem like badasses and her being suspicious over Sengoku’s connections was a nice touch. The other thing is that Barrel was said to be a former navy officer turned pirate if I recall correctly, and he had incredibly similar hair and eyes to our former navy supernova Drake. I’m not going to say without a doubt that they are the same person, but it did make me wonder.
People have stated that unlike Doflamingo’s impenetrable composure, Corazon is emotional and clumsy, but this episode proved that he can certainly rival Doflamingo when it counts. He forced himself to Law’s side, shrouded them in silence, and adorably shoved that fruit in Law’s mouth while yelling at him to have hope, all on the brink of death, and hiding his wounds. It was once that mission was complete that he collapsed. I loved the little moment of him laughing at Law when he tried to cast a magic spell to heal Corazon. His voice actor and his character are so strong and sweet. That said, this entire episode was shrouded in dramatic irony. The second Corazon handed a secret letter to Law to stop the horrors of Dressrosa, we knew it wouldn’t get to them.
To make it worse, Law had to muster up the courage to face the navy who he despises and trust in handing them the letter. Yet, when he finally had a good chance, the navy marine he found was the worst possible person. Vergo-san. The moment we saw him I started to freak out, for this is how Law and Vergo met. We saw Vergo put on his friendly and well intended navy marine character and carry Law on his back to help Corazon. However, like with the secret letter to begin with, we knew that Law’s only hope was his worst nightmare. Vergo arrived by Corazon’s side and we saw firsthand the man that the G-5 aspired to be and looked up to change into the merciless right hand man of the Don Quixote family. Reading that letter and hearing Corazon speak was enough to be the final nail in his coffin. Turning into his 100% haki form he beat Law and Corazon to the brink of their life. A crucial line in this scene was that Corazon went missing for a day when he was eight and came back to them again 14 years later and unlike Doflamingo who doted on his brother by giving him unearned trust, Vergo was always skeptical. This is something I’m sure we’ll probably learn more of if we get more of Doflamingo’s past.
Just as in Punk Hazard, I actually like Vergo a lot, his character is super charming to me and, may not be the deepest of the Don Quixote family, but may very well be my favorite. I love his adorable awkwardness and his stone cold loyalty and efficiency and focus on order, all topped off with his insanely beautiful death scene showing his resolve to die for his friend. This scene gave Punk Hazard some serious depth, as this is the beating that Vergo gave Law that we’ve heard about, he got revenge after all these years, and I bet every single instance of their meeting in Punk Hazard now has much more weight. It makes me want to go back and watch it again. I liked how we saw his focus on order again, with the classic “VERGO-SAN DA!” which Law may have only even given to him after he was in power and if so, I adore it even more. The idea that Law finally gave him the respect he demanded only when it was spiteful irony. Further, I liked little things like Vergo changing the way he referred to Corazon and calling him Rosinante after reading the letter or going back to referring to him as “the second Corazon” when confronting his loyalty to the family. Or even his ruthlessness in stomping over Corazon to get to Law as if in response in his begging. So good, this scene did not disappoint in any way. I feel bad for our boys but it was a wonderful showing from Vergo, barely saving his family from their demise.
And finally, in the end, the birdcage came out, the final piece of the puzzle. Doflamingo didn’t want to give them a chance of escape, and amazingly, Corazon showed more of that composure of his. He recognized in a mere moment that he had no chance of survival. His death was inevitable. So he embraced that and immediately made a plan, one that took no priority in the sparing of his life. Without the Don Quixote family knowing that Corazon had a devil fruit, they should believe that he ate the op op fruit. He can do something with that or so I think. Thus he started to approach his death and with a huge goofy smile on his face at that. A smile that reminded me of the fishman brothers trying to cheer up Shirahoshi when Otohime died. I promise you Corazon, Law never forget you or that smile off yours you admirable freaking dude. But to jump to the future, if Doflamingo wants eternal life and can’t coerce Law into it, I suppose the next best thing is to kill Law and transfer the power like what happened with Ace or Smiley. |
