| Personally I prefer dubs, because I like understanding what they are saying, but most dubs are too bad for me to even think about watching, i.e Lucky Star, Haruhi and... most of all NGE. I always watch Bleach in subs, cause well i Have no other options unless I want to be 9000 episodes behind. DBZ probably has a better dub, the uncut version of course, because since technology has improved the recordings have a higher quality and the music seems more epic, though some lines sound uber-cheesy in the beginning of the series. Also, Black Lagoon is a MUCH better experience in dub, it just feels more right, a lot more of the scenes feel more natural. I like the subs for Gurren Lagann, but does anybody else find that when Yoko's big, huge bouncing boobies are on the screen, they get distracted and forget to read the subs? |

| Japanese is better unless the anime is based on a cast of non-Japanese characters and a setting that is not Japan. Example: Cooking Master Boy. The whole anime is set in China, with an all Chinese cast of characters, and a story revolving around Chinese cuisine. I saw the whole thing in Cantonese dub and feel that it would have been weird otherwise. |

| Watched 98% of them in subs. English dubs only when I don't care much for the series (so I can finish the damn things) or I can't find them in subs (major head and earache on those Sailormoon drubs s***t, s***t f***kng s***t). I do admit though that I've seen a number of good dubs - it's just not that many and can never compare to the original. |

| Japanes sounds better, obviously. Not only is Japanese more fitting for anime, but they put more heart into it. Most english voice actors sound soulless to me, tbh...as if they don't really care and just want to get paid. |

Most of them do it because they actually like doing it and if they where doing it to just get paid, I promise you they would be lending their voices to something other than anime. Especially since the dubbing industry isn't something that's easy to get into in the first place. English voice actors put as much effort into it as the Japanese voice actors even if the end result isn't always good. This. (Heck, if they just wanted to get paid, they wouldn't be acting, period.) |
| Yep. I really cant stand watching anime in any other language than japanese. Subs are the best, I dont care- in my language or english ( though I prefer english,heh). Maybe thats just a habit, but for me seiyuu's voices the best fit to animes. And in my native language anime dubbing SUCKS. Dont EVER try to watch animes in Polish- thats just my good advice :P |

| I find animes to be generally better in Japanese (due to the fact that it's like one the prettiest languages there is! :D) although I actually liked Full Metal Alchemist better as English dubbed. All about personal taste I guess, try watching an dubbed and undubbed episode and see what you like! |

| Dubs are always inferior. I am so glad I live in Finland. Everything shown in television is shown in its original language, and only subbed. Even movies in the theaters are shown in their original audio, subbed. |

| All three of the movies the OP mentioned have excellent dubs. Unless you're fluent in Japanese, you're doing yourself a disservice by not watching them in English. As for English dubs v. Japanese dubs...is it 1996 all over again? Typically, I'll watch whatever sounds better/entertaining, or whichever has a voice actor I like. I'm watching Overman King Gainer in English right now because despite Gainer's whiny voice being a bit grating, (his Japanese VA isn't much better, but I guess that's because of the role he's in) Wendee Lee plays Adette Kistler...and it's funny to hear Faye coaxing underage boys into wearing latex bondage outfits. ... |

I still searched and found it in Japanese though. I started out as, love dub hate sub, but Naruto was my first anime when I really got into anime. Most of it was in English, then suddenly I couldn't find any dub so I was forced to watch sub. After that I have always loved subtitles. It's helping me learn a little bit of Japanese. |

Voice acting in Japan is a much more serious and competitive industry than those of North America, covering games to radio shows to anime to foreign film dubbing. It would be like comparing the American film industry to the Japanese film industry (in reverse). 2. Mouthflaps - In many anime productions (well, nowadays), mouths and facial expressions are animated afterwards to match to the lines of the seiyuu. Dub scriptwriters and voice actors instead must match their lines to pre-animated mouth movements, which is a difficult restriction. 3. Dubbing and voice acting differ greatly. While Japanese seiyuu record the dialogue for an episode as a group, English dubbers record alone, focusing on tone and matching mouth movements. Without the group mentality, much may be lost in the way of union and flow, sacrificing efficiency in one area for efficiency in another. 4. Japanese characters speaking Japanese seems much more natural than Japanese characters speaking any other language. As far as mannerisms and etiquette go, the Japanese people (as much as they might wish they were Westerners =3=) differ from English-speakers greatly. Voice acting chooses not to follow these but present them in such a fashion that most English-speakers would understand (which is really the goal, when you think about it.) As a rule, Ghibli films' English dubs are always better because of, well, Disney. Not to mention Ghibli's generally apathetic attitude as far as seiyuu go; though they have the highest budgets in Japanese animation (and the aesthetics show), they don't seem to care who they hire to voice their creations. I suppose another factor to mention would be the style of an anime. Most anime is strictly Japanese. Japanese slice of life rarely works outside of a Japanese setting and context, just like an American satire would be difficult to grasp for Japanese inhabitants. However, if the style is not strictly Japanese, there is no real reason that the anime would be strictly better in Japanese, and this is where the seiyuu industry meets the North American voice acting industry. While the level of adequacy for a Japanese seiyuu overshadows that of foreign dubbers, talent and situation can make a difference. Take, for example, Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo's dubs. Neither is very Japanese in style (don't let Champloo's setting fool you, hip-hop and badassed apathy are not native to Japan), and both feature casts of well-known, well-regarded voice actors: Steven Blum, Wendee Lee, Kirk Thornton, Kari Wahlgren, etc. When style is not an issue and talent is present, there's no reason why dubs can't be strictly superior. tl;dr go watch the Champloo dub fagets. |

Watching a show subbed still means you have the original audio (in this case Japanese). For those who don't like dubs, this is a win-win situation: they hear the Japanese voices AND they can tell what they're actually saying without having (crappy) dub actors ruin their fun. |

| Um not all the time, I think Cowboy bebop and Outlaw Star are alot better in English, I think their English voices fit a lot better. Plus Spikes voice in English is just damn sexy. Pretty much the entire English voice cast for cowboy bebop is amazing. |

Sub is better: Blood+ Death Note Elfen Lied Dub is better: Code Geass (and R2) Cowboy Bebop Fullmetal Alchemist Inuyasha Neon Genesis Evangelion Samurai Champloo Tales of Phantasia Wolf's Rain No difference: Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi So far, dub has been better. I tend to watch series dubbed if they have really reputable English voice actors. And since a lot of series aren't dubbed, I can get my fill of Japanese (since I'm a Japanese language student) then. |

| I like to watch dubbed anime whenever possible for some reason. But, most of the time I watch with the Subtitles. Although, I think the english voices are just as good. Tried watching Fruits Basket in japanese and Tohru's voice annoyed me too much. Way better with the dub. |

I admit being a lazy bastard who prefers dubbing as I like to relax and just get into the show without having to deal with subtitles, but if a show I like is only subbed, hey, I'll adapt and enjoy that as well. However, to say subbing is better than dubbing, or vice-versa is a tired, old, and, in my opinion, annoying argument of rampant arrogance, on both sides. Reminds me too much of Democrats saying they're better than Republicans, or conservatives saying they're better than liberals, again, so much nonsensical noise and bickering. Subbing and dubbing each has it's own appeal to fans, one doesn't HAVE to be better or worse than the other, so just kick back and enjoy what you like. |
