Miho's quotes are always so funny. :P

That was a really intense race. The soundtrack really nailed it.

Poor Haru.. :( Rin is such a jerk. He didn't have to said that to Haru. Sure, I felt sad for him for the tragedy that happened to his father, but now he's acting like a moron, so I can't feel much sympathy for him.

Free! has managed to mix moments of comedy and drama well, and the work works very well with the story of each character. In this seventh episode it was time to discover more about Rin's story and what motivates him to swim.

Previously we had discovered that his goal was to become an Olympic swimmer, but now we discover that this has a direct connection with his father. Rin's father was an incredible swimmer who had won several championships and his dream was to be an Olympic swimmer, but he got married, had children and became a fisherman (Rin feels guilty about this) and one day he died in a storm, the same that took away the old man Makoto admired.

Because of this, his dream is to be an Olympic swimmer, but to do so he feels he has to defeat Haru first, someone who has incredible talent and does not swim to break records but does so freely. He says he won't be able to move forward if he doesn't defeat him.

The soundtrack with piano music is phenomenal throughout the episode, what an incredible production.

The episode also sees the beginning of the tournament and the dispute between Haru and Rin, and Rin has impressive speed. Haru always seemed very light, but the episode ends in a very heavy way for the character, with a very bad attitude on Rin's part.

"I'm never swimming with you again, never."

Wow what an episode!

I really liked the part where Haru and the others are looking at photos and Haru picks up the one of Rin. The way he holds just that one, looking at Rin, it just gives me the vibe that Haru really misses Rin platonically - either as a friend, teammate, or both. Then the picture flies away, showing how Rin is not within Haru's grasp. Later, when Rin wins and says he never ever has to swim with Haru again, Rin truly slips from his grasp. This definitely bothers Haru. It makes me wonder, when Haru says he either swims free or not at all (in the dub), does being "free" as a swimmer mean getting to swim with others as you please and not just freestyle? I hope Haru will still swim even after losing to Rin,

Rin seems to be opening up to his roommate/teammate which is good. I was disappointed he wouldn't ride the bus with his team (he seems like he isn't the type to rely on others or see teamwork/help from others as essential), but was relieved it was more about meeting with his dad and not avoiding his teammates. I'm sorry his dad died though!

Is Mako kinda jealous of Rin since he has Haru's full attention?

Poor Rei wanted to participate in a relay race but Haru is being too stubborn :(

Nitori is annoying af

Rin's dad is the little boy in the picture? Makoto and Rin share a similar story in a way since Rin's dad died during the same accident as the fisherman. Does Rin's coach have a crush on Gou or something? Dubstep in anime is something I come across very rarely. Rin is getting on my nerves. As each episode progresses, becomes a bigger dick each time. Let's hope that somehow Haru changes his mind and does relay with the rest of his teammates.

I like this show but have one giant problem with it, and it's the title character.
Haruka's "I only swim free" shtick is really dumb. Nobody would say that, and when he turns down Rin just for a race it's just arrogant. Especially considering HIS DAD DIED. Jesus.
The anime portrays it as if Rin is the one with beef against Haruka but I see it the opposite, Haru is a jerk and has a really dumb obsession about 'blah blah blah freestyle" while Rin actually tries to reach out to him. So I empathize with him way more than Haru who just acts like a prick.

Also, the amount of muscle these dudes have is impossible.
They're supposed to be 17??? Lol are you kidding. I don't think most 17 year boy's bodies could look like Michael facking PHELPS no matter what, even if they spent ALL DAY pumping iron and THEY DON'T. They show Rin doing sit-ups and his arms looks like a 24 year old man. Then they walk around in those baggy school uniforms with pants and ties and look like bankers. 'Iwatobi Bankers Club' doesn't have the same ring to it...

RIN'S NUMBER ONE! YES!! Very happy with that result. It was really close though so it's not like Haru swam badly.
