Can't give this a 10, as bad as I wanted to. The show spent 3ish episodes on the Pyramid Scheme and merely a half on pure Misaki development/background. To top it off, they didn't (directly) end up together even though it's fairly obvious that they will. Displaying that would have been the cherry on top. All in all, 9/10.

I don't understand why everyone seems unsatisfied with the ending. I mean, we find out that Satou and Misaki practically need each other to live, as implied by their new contract. Kissing scenes are kind of cliched in my opinion. And as Yamazaki said, life is full of vague uncertainties(that's kind of how the quote went right?). It wouldn't be realistic if everything just wrapped up nicely at the end, and to me the ending was already very positive and hopeful.

I dont get the whole "I WANT A KISS" thing. Its clear as day they actually both love each other hell sato shows and even says it. Misaki shows it as well just in her own werid way.Mainly cause of her upbrining. She did two contracts witch basicly said I want you and I to be together forever. Heck she was even crying and hitting sato when she thought he almost died and said dont ever do that again. Even the old house scene shows it when she snuggles up to him and says she wants to hear about his life. The love may not be obvious with a big ol kiss but its there in its subtle way you just gatta pay attention.

As you can tell I actually really enjoyed this anime alot and I was happy with the ending. Everyone basicly had a happy ending even through all the crap they went through and even got thier own partners.

This anime was very good. I really enjoyed it. The ending was ok. Happy endings for all the MCs. But it doesn't live up to the manga. The manga is a masterpiece. I get chills thinking how dark the manga gets.

CONSPIRACY!!!!!!

Yay, happy end! :D

What a feels rollercoaster this show was...

For a moment, I really though that Misaki died. But a miracle did happen. And his speach was epic. Too bad there was a wiring down there xD Or rather luckily, ther was a wiring down there...

That scene at the house was sweet. I like that he did that Freud joke again xD

So Yamazaki did found love. Also, is it me or she looked exactly like Nanako???

But in the end... Welcome to the N.H.K.! :)

I must admit, after seeing first ep I thought it would be just another common comedy and ... I have never been so wrong. Wonderful characters, fantastic story and soundtrack... THIS SOUNDTRACK.

The only reason I didn't give it 10 is my own feeling of dissapointment after seeing "half happy ending".

Either way 9/10, certainly would watch again.

Fuck what's up with people wanting a kissing scene. Faggots it's implied that they both need each other to survive: Two pieces of shits. Misaki expresses it through her cheesy contracts.

But man what a good anime, I enjoyed the concepts of how this anime potrayes life's problems and how you can be stuck in a loop of being a loser like Satou if you don't get your shit together. It let's me know what to avoid in life. I also like how it potrays the idea of Hikkikimori and how they cut themselves from outside contact as it shows the audience how much of an issue it is. I thought the ending was pretty stink but Satou being a piece of shit made it so funny and enjoyable. I found the part where he got saved by the netting funny when he tried to kill himself at the end.

Overall I liked every story throughout and the characters, I find it ironic how Misaki helping Satou throughout the series is really helping herself. 8.3/10

Oh god, the first eight minutes was one of the best moments in anime but then it just turned absolute crap.
It ended without resolving anything, his life didn't matter before and it didn't change anything now despite him working.
If it ended with Misaki dying, as much as I didn't want that, I thought that it would've been better. It was a very shallow ending indeed.
I think the most fitting ending though would be both of them committing suicide together.
I just wished they touched the subject of meaning of life more instead resolving it by showing some monster from the NHK or whatever the hell that was.
Instead the ending was very shallow.
Something along the lines of "Life has no meaning but so what? Let’s just all pretend it’s just one big conspiracy or god making us feel that way and nothing is really wrong with the society."

A happy and unfitting ending in a show which was much more promising if it had been done well and issues treated seriously throughout and not only in the last few episodes.

The animation wasn't consistent throughout as well which didn't make me think well of it but it wasn't horrible.
The Ost however I’m going to listen to for some time, in some episodes the music really drove the show. Liked the first and second ending, didn’t really like the opening it was quite unfitting. The insert songs were very good.

As for the characters i hated and will hate Satou which resembles a very lazy and stupid otaku with social issues although i had a feeling they really weren't that hard to overcome. Also not being kind to the people who only want to help you made him a jerk sometimes. It turns out all he needed was simply a little push as when his mother cut his funds he did not die even if his life might have had no meaning but immediately goes to find himself a job as being magically cured (NOT for the first time the character have been cured like this in the series) by not eating for 3 days.
so THE MORAL from the story is “If you are a Hikokomori, have any social issues or suffer from depression or isolation, don’t eat for 3 days and your condition will drastically improve."
Misaki on the other hand is one of my favorite characters and I really pity her condition and that she had to pick someone like Satou.

I gave this show 8/10, it could've been 9 if the ending was done well and if they treated the conditions of other characters in more serious manner instead of turning it into a joke in some cases. Incredibly wasted potential but I'll probably re watch this show as it had it's amazing moments in some episodes especially reflections on existentialism.

It's quite difficult to find short comings in this series. The music is abso-fucking-lutely fantastic; the characters, their relationships, and their development are awesome; the story is amazing with a nice heaping of all the spices that make an anime great not to mention that it's also very original; and no one could forget that this series is just enjoyable. I even liked the art style, though characters got very hazy when at a distance.

Overall, I find it hard to not give this anime a 10/10 ranking. At a minimum on my scale this anime would be around ~9.5/10 which obviously on MAL rounds to a 10/10.

I think you are completely missing the point of the "don't eat three days and your cured" deal. It even talked about it during that episode.

The statement that this anime was making is that Hikokomori is a result of how without an individual doing anything, society will still provide the basic necessities for life. As long as people are being supported by "the system" they don't have to learn to sink or swim on their own. Hikokomori is a product of the system; it is only once you have been abandoned by the system that you can break through. If you have the will to survive you will break the cycle, but if you do not you will die.

So a revision of your moral would be: "If you are a Hikokomori, have any social issues, or suffer from depression/isolation; you will stay that way as long as you are provided the basic necessities of life. It is only once you are forced to sink or swim that you can willingly escape your predicament."

I was referring more to the fact that the show failed in portraying a real hikokomori. Satou is supposed to be hikokomori and yet that doesn't stop him from going out with his friend to a place full of people and not feel his condition in any way. And then the other day he goes out for a walk and starts seeing all eyes on him and starts acting all paranoid. The anime seems like it's suggesting that Satou is hikokomori only on certain days. I may not know much about the issue but a person who haven't left their room in over a year shouldn't act like that. Either he's a hikokomori or's he's lazy. Same goes for the guy in episode 18 which acts like he's being murdered by the sight of people in his room and yet even when he is indeed thrown into deep water he's shown riding the bike all smiling next, for someone having such deep psychological issues even that should be a problem. My point is the anime makes it look too easy to recover from such situation.

Happy end, not sure if those broken soul should be together, but they were so cute

It was very enjoyable overall and kind of scary to see struggles which would make you feel related to them

Having seen a lot of other series and movies which most of were produced after this I have to say they were probably inspired by this
And "Welcome to the NHK" itself felt like coming from "Tokyo Godfather" looking at it's style and Satou running into events (disasters) one after another

The script and execution was so brilliant it made me wanting to see more and more of it every time an episode ended
Misaki and Yamazaki were truly a gift from the sky to Satou compared to Megumi's brother

I really hoped Nanako would be paired with Yamazaki at the end

Hitomi's arc was quite touching

Was the title a jab towards the TV channel with a similar name?

I thought it was the perfect ending to an amazing series. I'm not into the childish cliche endings where guy kisses girl and they ride off into the sun set. In fact I would have disappointed if it did end that way. The ending was fitting. The series had a depressing and somber tone throughout. I felt it touched on some very real issues that many people experience and found the series very relatable. Each character was struggling with psychological issues, but by the end of the series they were all in a better state of mind.
“Because of our broken instincts we are in pain. We continue in pain because our instincts have been twisted by reason. So, what are we supposed to do? Should we abandon knowledge? Throw away reason? In any event, that wouldn't be possible. For better or worse, we ate the fruit of knowledge long, long ago.”

Very good! I'm giving it a 9/10.

Disappointed a little with not knowing for sure if they end up together, although they more than likely will....I just wish they would have kissed or something...but the end was still great, had me scared a bunch, especially when she tried to fall, and when he jumped off...

So many conflicted feelings!

On the one hand I'm so pissed off at Satou jumping, like showing her he's even worse is gonna make her feel better! I wish they woulda just shown that he really had the net in mind at least but not even that. I hate him so much lol, goddamn idiot! He already showed her a miracle by saving her! Wasn't that enough?!

Hitomi gets married and happy? Totally undeserved, but let's hope she doesn't cause her new family any grief.

Misaki-chan, poor Misaki-chan, well they seem to have ended up as friends and will probably end up in a relationship. I don't really mind the open ending, it's far from cliché and after my initial disappointment it actually felt refreshing and hopeful.

Really wanted to give this a 10 but it ended up a 9, I loved the show but the pyramid scheme felt poor and some stuff was just really unrealistic I felt, some stuff could have been done a lot better. Still, really great show despite its flaws and will always hold a very special place.

Loved it, 8/10 series for me. The characters all have issues and they do my head in a lot lol, but then it's also cool because of those flaws - they aren't exactly a Monkey D. Luffy or Uzumaki Naruto lol

tbh I'm not a fan of "kiss & walk into the sunset and live happily ever after" endings lol, I liked that they basically live happily ever after... but it's subtle.

Exacly, why are almost all animé endings like this!? It's so frustrating! It's not like the creators will die from drawing a little more happieness! Or maybe the storywriters are like Satou and think it's to embarassing to write about things like them kissing or something.

When I watch animé I do it because I want to escape the depressing reallity, so make more happier endings damn it!!!

Otherwise this series was great! :P
LOL what?!

Clearly Misaki and Sato will eventually be with each other the way anime ended.

It was a really warm and cute moment when Misaki was dragging Satou away from the cliff xD

So close to being a 10/10, but the last few episodes (after yamazaki left at episode 20) just weren't satisfying, and i'm not talking about the Satou-Misaki relationship.
So many things were left unresolved, including the game Satou and Yamazaki made, Yamazaki-Nanako relationship and Satou's feelings for Hitomi(senpai).

This was the thing that annoyed me the most. They spent so much time making the game only to totally disregard it just 'only 5 people that bought it at Winter Comiket'. I mean they didn't stay true to Yamazaki's character, there is no way an otaku would want anything to do with taking over a ranch.
It was even hinted when Satou was saying goodbye at the train station, when he said something along the lines of "You're not going home defeated right?!!". But no, he did. *remembers depressing moment*

Same sort of thing with Nanako, surely she would've noticed him acting strange and gave him another chance?

I guess this was handled better but at various points in the show we saw that Satou had feelings for Hitomi, but he never ended up saying anything, though you could argue he was actually in love with Misaki and so fair enough.

My ideal ending :-

One of the people who bought the game at the Winter Comiket was actually the owner of a gaming company, and seeing the potential of the game he decides to give Satou and Yamazaki a chance!
Yamazaki apologizes to Nanako and they recruit Nanako as a voice actor for their game (makes perfect sense since she's studying to become a voice actor).
Misaki decides to help as well, hoping that if the game is a success, his hikikomori condition will be cured. Misaki also makes a new friend in Nanako and no longer feels 'alone'.

The game ends up being a success, and they all are offered jobs at the company. Finally ends with Yamazaki and Nanako's relationship restored, and Satou graduating from his hikikomori status, with hints at a Satou and Misaki getting together.

Would love to hear any opinions on this... :D

Yeah such a disappointing ending -.- This show was a roller coaster of emotions and ended with a meh and a wtf-is-that-it???. Although the rest of the series was pretty good so 9/10. Also I enjoy closure and would love not to think about it again as long it was a good ending but FUCK OPEN ENDINGS. Just end it on a high note or else there will be a craving for a sequel which will never happen and that just leaves a bad after taste.

The ending has to be one of the biggest 'blue balls' ending in anime. I normally don't care for romance or 'guy get's the girl' endings but this anime...it pissed me off. After everything they both went through and the fact that they both love each other and it's pretty obvious they know about their feelings. Just to have it end like that kind of pissed me off. Either way it seems like they get married in the Light Novel so at least I have some closure. Just tired of these kinds of annoying romances in manga. Either don't have any romance, or make shit clear by the end of it. These vague overly dramatic awkward romances are starting to get old.

I was ok with the ending. It wasn't what I was expecting, but, then again, I had no idea what to expect. Overall, a pretty nice series. Somewhere along the line, it lost me and I wasn't enjoying it as much as I had been before. The whole Mouse Road arc was terribly boring and felt like filler. Whenever it stopped focusing on Misaki's and Sato's relationship or stopped being a comedy, it lost me. This whole series wasn't what I was expecting, and I think it's slightly overrated, and I was probably going into it with too high of expectations, but I still enjoyed it.

Enjoyed the ending simply because of the fact that it was open which means I can have it in my head that he didn't get with Misaki. None of the girls were really a good fit for him to be honest. Hitomi only needed him when nothing else was there and Misaki came off as desperate who'd settle for anyone who showed interest in her. Mia was probably the best match, kappa.

I understand the dissapointment of the others with this ending, but I think the ending was perfect. This whole show was (imho) about facing the problems of life, and not escaping them (i.e. the nerd guy or the suicide attempt), and in the end the show stayed true to this. In other words, there was no unrealistic ending, but something of an advice. Oh, and by the way, it is heavily implied that they get together. It's just that the MCs can only express their feelings this way, as they are both socially awkward.

I don't like open endings :/ sucks for me, I guess. Still, it was really great and a unique series that I won't ever forget.
one thing, I know priorities kind of changed towards the end from his hikikomori status to resolving things with Misaki, and so he quickly escaped hikikomori life, but that was way too fast. Barely even a transition. It's like, he was hungry, and then he's suddenly a normal working person of society.

Excellent ending. Not entirely happy, but not that depressive either. Satou stopped being a hikikomori, and that's satisfying enough for me. As for Misaki and Satou's relationship ending "unresolved"... I'm fine with that too, since romance wasn't the focus of the show at all.

WHAT THE.... well knew it's somewhere around there.
Besides Satou and Misaki's issue.. I'm glad Yamazaki and Hitomi senpai are living their lives happily now.
His sacrifice was a little overly exaggerated with those conspiracy minions.. lol.
I like the scene where Misaki was whacking Satou's head.. very cute of her.
Their romance got lost halfway when all the depression butts in anyway.. hahahah.
Just got to accept the inconclusive romance between them.. let your imagination run free.
It's certainly a great series.. although the expectations are definitely high with its reputation.
The story is very intriguing story and one of the best out there.. lots of lesson learned.
Still I enjoyed it very much.. manga and light novels are next.

The ending was okay. Would have loved it if Misaki and Satou would have ended up together, but I kinda saw an anti-climatic end for the two since the beginning, as most anime tends to end like that. Still kinda odd however since he openly admitted that he was in love with her. As a whole though this series really had me at the edge of my seat, only towards the middle did the anime kinda lose a bit of steam there, then started to pick up towards the end (except for the ending itself). Otherwise it was a great series. Really shocked there hasn't been a sequel yet, considering how old this anime is.

I absolutely enjoyed the hell out of this anime!!
glad to see we got a happy ending
Misaki said she had no imagination but Satou def awoke her imaginative side
kind of sad we didn't get our kiss but glad to see they are in a relationship ( thats what I got out of that contract)
9/10 for me def going to recommend this to my friends ^-^
Misaki was my fav character!!

Half asses a suicide attempt, waits until Sato gets there to jump, goes on about how worthless she is... Holy shit, if I met a girl this manipulative/spiteful irl I would run away from her as fast as possible: threatening suicide to get attention/hurt other people is not cool. Then again, her mom pulled the same crazy stunt on her, so it's not surprising.

Still, I liked the ending and I'm glad it worked out.
