Kirito being a Gary Stu or SAO being a harem isn't an 'opinion'. It's fact.

Nobody seemed to be doing anything for fun in that game, much less dueling. And saving a life isn't exactly jumping in to fight a guy that has (or shouldn't have, welp) no real power over Asuna because she can't decide to just tell him to stfu and let her leave on her own.

If you want a regular girl getting saved, do that; SAO set up this strong independent girl just to destroy that as soon as she had screentime again just for the same of some odd fantasy of domination - or I don't even understand why Asuna had to become what she did.

Come on, enjoy the discussion, it's fun. You act as if someone insulted you by making a character archetype that has been here since people created letters.

Back on topic, I was talking about that psycho that poisoned Kirito and the other guy (I have hard time remembering names of characters I don't give a damn about) and tried to kill Kirito. That was outright life saving even though Kirito was recovering from stun, he still wasn't strong enough not to get killed. Asuna jumped in and saved him. She EVEN got a kiss as thanks (not to mention got laid). That's as far as "damsel in distress" goes with switched genders as it can. Not to mention that she was the only who "started" their sex life (she could have changed her mind after clearing the misunderstanding). BOTH of these are something that is usually seen as typically male actions.

About Kirito saving Asuna when that guy attacked her. Once again, it is bad that he saves her but not important that she saves him? Just because he repaid her back that doesn't render her saving him void. They were STILL in typical damsel in distress situation with switched genders, that's an undeniable fact. Ignoring it would be an insult to Asuna.

Perfect characters that are written as nothing more than a vehicle for self-insertion are called Mary Sues. Arguing that SAO panders to girls too because Asuna is also a Mary-Sue is...

So, you've just said that Mary Sues are made to be self-insert characters, yet Asuna isn't a self-insert character even though she's a Mary Sue. You're getting a little lost in that or I misunderstood your point. Please, elaborate.

Exactly. Asuna is a character made solely for fap material and not for self-insert. Otherwise why would she be so perfect right? When things are perfect they get too boring so I don't see why any girl would self-insert with her. I'm not being sarcastic, really. It's fun to discuss.

For the same reason Kirito is a self-insert and so pefectly right. If Asuna was only a fappable material, her only skills would be support (fight-wise) and name-shouting (no, I don't mean during sex) + possibly Sugu's chest-size chest. I already wrote before why Asuna is a self-insert character and why Kirito also is the "perfect partner" character. Glad, someone agrees.

He wasn't a teenager? That's what I keep hearing, that he started SAO in highschool.

Odds are very, very low that he was a teenager when he first wrote SAO. We don't know his birth date, and from the one picture we have, he could easily be in his early 30s. His favorite novel series are basically all things that were most heavily active in the 90s, and odds are good that his first RPG was one of the Wizardry games which would be early 90s. Bottom line, if he was in his teens when he wrote SAO, we'd be talking 18-19.

I am fully aware of that as I AM one of these. Which is why it bothers me- You never even see a female in the background of the game. Every single one is brought to the forefront of the screen and then falls in love with our Gary Sue.

You really need to lay off the hyperbole. It makes you look ridiculous. No females in the background? There are few, as befitting a game with a 20% female player base. But they are there. The couples in the background of the Silica episode, the kids in the Yui episodes come to mind immediately, and I'm sure there are more if I actually went looking. As for "every single one falls in love with Kirito", just off the top of my head, there's Rosalia (the girl that headed the bandit guild), Yolko (girl that deceived Kirito and Asuna), Sasha (the girl taking care of the children), and Yulier (the girl with the Army that asked them for help) that don't fall for Kirito. Technically Yui as well, seeing as you're using "falls in love" to mean "is romantically attracted to" and Yui's attraction is parent/child.

The only constant female (up until the incestuous fanservice cousin) is Asuna. Every other female falls in love with our character and then dissappears NEVER TO BE SEEN AGAIN in the series with the exception of the flashbacks to the one girl.

Lizabeth in Agil's shop making a snarky comment to Kirito. All of the characters being shown when SAO is cleared. The male characters don't have it much better either.

There's also the manner in which female gamers are portrayed- they're weak and scared and have to be protected. GUESS WHAT- Female Gamers are still GAMERS. If we were scared girly girls we wouldn't be playing video games, now would we? The only one who is semi-accurrate is the evil chick who tries to get them all killed in that one episode. Asuna is okay later on and I do like that she says "I'll protect you too", but no other female is like that. And again, you don't even see girls in the background. Female gamers are 'rare', but not THAT rare.

Again, lay off the hyperbole. The only female character that was weak and scared and needed to be protected was Sachi. Asuna was kicking ass from the get go. Silica was a competent fighter that only needed help because she ended up in a situation where she couldn't solo, then only needed protection to go to a much higher level than she was. And when faced with a bunch of PKers attacking Kirito, her instinct was to try and help him, not run away. Lizabeth was a competent fighter that was never scared, and was annoyed at how dismissive of her skill the much higher leveled Kirito was.

And don't even get me started on the arc where the husband killed his wife because he stopped being subserviant- They really, REALLY downplayed that. That episode was just so offensive that I laughed for like 5 minutes after watching it.
And to the poster above me- I'm not talking about the light novels. I haven't read them and don't care to. I'm talking about the anime, which IS a harem.

The funny thing is that it runs counter to your claim that all the female are portrayed as weak and scared and need to be protected. Griselda stepped and took charge and was in general a strong leader for her guild. Nor do I see how they "downplayed" it, unless you mean "they threw her guilty husband in prison for the rest of the game instead of revenge murdering him on the spot."

Good stuff won't be out until Comiket 83. Wonder if MTSP will do a NTR one with Sugou.
As a child, I was told that society is a melting pot of talents; knowledge and experience combined to form important alloys that will contribute to mankind. When I got to highschool, however, I thought that it's more like a river in which the water represents our peers while we ourselves are the stones in the river. Constant erosion by mindless majority sheeping has made us lose our unique edge. After I hit the age of 18, I realized that I've been wrong all along. Society is no melting pot. Society is no river. Is anyone else here annoyed by how slow paced the anime is? I mean, the entire first 10 minutes of episode 18 basically covered like half a page of the light novel...

On the bright side, this'll probably mean that 25 episodes won't be nearly enough to cover all the story arcs. Second Season, anyone? :P

It will definitively get a second season, especially for the fact that it's selling pretty well. You also know how SAO is being sucked off in every aspect, no way they will ever stop here.

Hehe, trew... Although I am kinda scared that the anime seems to be getting TOO mainstream, like you said. IMO, anime becomes mainstream -> Producers begin rushing it -> Ohgodwhy

I know that SAO is a completely different production structure, but think Naruto when it was first released, and Naruto now... Obviously SAO will never have 500 episodes, but the quality COULD drop.

There's no need to worry. Based on my experience, animes like SAO will quickly drop popularity with time, it's just a hype. In some years most won't even remember what was this about, and those who did, will just think as "good old times".

Japan already voted SAO as the anime to be forgotten in 2 years on Big Globe
Then again, Big Globe is shit...

It won't. I can guarantee that at least. Most of the shows that got hype like that, were forgotten in 2-3 years later, and remained like the random show you get through MAL lists. But, IF remained like that, it would be like DBZ. People wouldn't mind it anymore (it was hated as hell at the time it was hyped) and it will become a symbol of anime to the world.

Though I just can't see that happening.

I agree with this. Middle schoolers can definitely have Suguha-sized boobs. And Suguha isn't really a middle schooler in the American sense anyways since Japanese high schools have 3 grades instead of 4. So if I'm not mistaken, she's more like a freshman in high school.

She is only a year younger than Kirito. He is 16 which makes Suguha 15. Aren't there other shows with girls just as young or younger with big chests? Of course there are lol. One of them is Hinata whom I don't like, even if her rack is huge.

I agree with this. Middle schoolers can definitely have Suguha-sized boobs. And Suguha isn't really a middle schooler in the American sense anyways since Japanese high schools have 3 grades instead of 4. So if I'm not mistaken, she's more like a freshman in high school.
This person here knows a bit about the Japanese education system ^^

That's not exactly the point. Any person who did research on the matter (I asked a friend of mine that lives in Japan) knows that anything C cup above is pretty rare sight. Most of the girls will have A-B cup. Japanese breasts are smaller in comparison to western ones, a lot.

Of course, I'm not saying it's impossible to see girls like Suguha, but that they are rare, they are.

Average. That doenst make it 100%.And I even said that they would be few like:
10 out of 100 in my country
1 out of 100 in Japan.
This wouldnt be weird at all.

Why are even talking about chest size anyway? That is not the best way to pick a girl to like IMO. Personally, I don't care how big a girl's chest is, personality is more important in my book ^_^

Suguha's chest is shown close-up so they seem bigger, but yea her size is actually not that big. Girls with huge chests are not very appealing IMO. Suguha is actually a pretty strong player which is better to talk about than her breasts.

We are now at the point where breast sizes are considered plotholes?

Honestly, why do you guys care so much that there happens to be one character in SAO with somewhat large breasts?
Just be glad that they are of an aesthetically-pleasing size and not absurdly huge globs of fat.

I dont think so but I like how we jumped form SAO being sexist towards women, to women and their chest sizes.

I'm pretty sure is just fun to discuss. I like SAO and I like Suguha's breasts. She's a great character for fap material, and it's cool to get more knowledge.

A perfectly logical progression if I may say so.

I never said anything that refutes your point. I already knew that. I was only saying that someone knows how the Japanese education system works. Don't take things out of context.

As for the friend saying line, that doesn't really work on the Internet. It is like when I go on a sports forum and someone posts that they know someone who says that this trade will happen or this move will be made. It has no credibility at all. Just giving you a point not to do that, better to have facts.

Uhum. Then search an updated poll about the matter, it's common knowledge (for those who are familiar with it) that's why I didn't bother to put something like "THERE ARE RESEARCHES THAT CONFIRM THIS". I'm serious though, just search.

Either way, I wasn't taking you out of context, I was actually agreeing with you, but putting some additional information altogether.

Yes, but don't need to tell that to me. I already know that Western women usually have a larger chest on average. I was only pointing out that you shouldn't do the my friend said....just some advice there. If you don't want to take it then don't take it. You have a choice.

It is a bit hard for me to know if you are agreeing with me or not since you said that is not the point. From my view it sounded like a disagreement. I get that you agreed with me now though.
