have you ever heard a cover of an anime song that was better than the original.
Like 'aLIEz' 'vers'ion of Amanda Lee is way better than the Jap version.
(Pun Intended)

Amanda Lee sucks. She butchered the Shigatsu medley.

I'm sure I have, considering I try to listen to a lot of utaite covers, though I can't name them off the top of my head. I think usually if I do like it better than the original it's either because I didn't like the original singer's voice/way of singing or because the coverers added some cool adlibs or harmonies that weren't in the original.

This is the only one I can think of at the moment that I've been into recently:

I've checked out a ton of singers who made covers for anime, and the only one who stood out to me was Raon Lee. Some of her songs are on par or even better than the original versions, but I don't quite remember which songs exactly off the top of my head.

AmaLee's cover for aLIEz was surprisingly not that bad, and probably one of her better covers, but the original aLIEz and the 10th Anniversary Studio Live version were still far better imo.

The Yumiko cover of Kaidoku Funo from Code Geass (One of my favorite OPs) is pretty great. Like it better than the original.

«Tamashii no Refrain» (Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth, ED)
covered by SHIMAZU Aya

‘Enka’ (演歌) is a musical genre that gained popularity from the 1950s to the 1980s, a position similar to that of soul music in Japan.
SHIMAZU is a veteran singer who has built up her career in the enka field. Since the popularity of enka was on a downward slope, she was not blessed with any big hits and was buried in obscurity.
However, her polished singing ability is overwhelming. One of her songs, which evokes strong nostalgia with lyrics in a distinctive dialect about a parent's concern for a child working in the city, “Don't worry about going back home,” was performed on the annual New Year's Eve singing program “Kouhaku Uta Gassen” and moved the whole country. She became well-known throughout Japan when she was nicknamed somewhat strange “Uta Kaiju (the singing monster).
She is also known for her willingness to try her hand at singing songs from various genres. Although she does not speak a foreign language, with proper pronunciation instruction coupled with her good ear, she proves her capability to sing with remarkable perfection. Her renditions of “Amazing Grace,” “I Will Always Love You” (the version arranged for Whitney Houston,) and others have become concert favorites. The repertoire of Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder cover songs has been released on albums.

As for anime song covers, she has performed “Idol” for «[Oshi no Ko],» “Shin Jidai,” “Watashi wa Saikyo” for «ONE PIECE FILM RED», and Ado's “唱 -Show-” on live TV broadcasts, each of which has become a trending phenomenon on social networks.
In 2017, the song “I Can't Do Anything: Sora yo” was officially used as the ending theme for «Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin».

In my personal assessment, I consider her the most talented Japanese female solo singer alive.

I think it's safe to say I've never come across an anime song cover that I liked more than the original, but there's covers that I like as much as the original.

- This can come the closest to me preferring it over the original just because I like the singer's voice and it's easier to sing along to in English.

- Decided to bump this one up, because I would rather listen to this version over the original. Y Chang was really good at English covers and his voice reminds me of Vic Mignogna's, so it almost sounds like Ed is singing this song.

- This one's just fun.

https://soundcloud.com/cosmic-562735448/y-chang-sasuya-puzzle - Unfortunately, this particular cover got wiped off of YouTube, but I really like this cover and listened to it years before I ever watched "Welcome to the NHK."

- Not a cover, I'm pretty sure it's the official Korean version of the "Kimi ni Todoke" and it sounds so natural to me.
