So this never really occurred to me before, because I viewed the entirety of SAO relatively mediocre/bad. But then I realized that the ability to like each arc should be mutually exclusive.

In the first half of the first season, Kirito is like this generic Gary Stu kid, who's OP in this video game for no real particular reason. He also gets some unique powah and some waifus, and I can see why people can get behind that

In the second half, he's now a bit more gay as this elf thing, but here we introduce some reyp and tentacles, among other things, and I can see why some people might want to see him as a gay elf, or get NTRed and such.

In the 2nd season, he's now a full on homosexual transvestite bringing swords to gunfights (and winning), and I can see why this might fit some peoples' obscure fetishes.

But how the hell do people like all three of these things in SAO as a whole? Like whut?

But maybe the entire series is a subconscious reflection of the creator's closet homosexuality, and he wants to slowly guide kids down the same path.

It's okay in my opinion. Not as bad as people make it out to be. (coming from a casual )

All of it is okay? Like, were all three arcs were equally okay?

Yep, it isn't the most original story nor has the best characters but it being entertaining as fuck made me like the show. It delivered what it was supposed to deliver, entertainment. Although I hated the Excalibur arc, that was boring af.

Fucking lol, this cracked me up good.

I like the soundtrack a tonne but I have way too much shit to sling on S1 to post it all here.
SAO II imo was better than SAO I as the whole cheat death bullshit was gone and I thought that sinon and yuki were VASTLY superior to Asuna. Still got a tonne of flaws mind you but not much that really got on my nerves (Apart from kirito being kirito)

Lolol not completely unjustified though. It had an interesting premise but fell way flat of its expectations. Any world-building? No. Fleshed out characters? No. Good plot? No. It was meant to be a virtual MMO gone wrong; they literally could have done anything and made it work.

Instead we got a very one-dimensional romance with two very one-dimensional characters in what has to be the most annoying side-plot I've ever come across. Forget about the other characters because 1) if they're female they want to sleep with Kirito, 2) if they're male they're made irrelevant.

I feel like the only reason why people like it is because it has an interesting premise but what the fanboys fail to recognise is that everything is REALLY horrifically executed.

It was my favorite anime at first. It was like the first anime that got me into really watching anime. I watched in once and loved it. Tried to watch it again and was like ehhh, I guess it's kinda okay. Third time I thought it was kinda crappy. I think it can appeal to people if it is an early anime, but as you get a "taste" for anime, I feel like the sense of quality of it goes down very quickly. I don't hate it, but find it kinda meh.

Sword Art Online is easily the worst anime I`ve ever watched. And I`m not overreacting. It has many flaws, plotholes, bad characters, settings and it`s just plain boring. Since I don`t want to go to full detail why this series is such bullsh!t I`ll recommend you to watch Digibro`s or Mother`s Basement`s videos about SAO. They have good points about why this show deserves to die. Go check em out!

SAO season 1 is too simple to be great. But honestly, the SAO season 2 amazed me (except the Excalibur Arc)

The only part I didn't like about it is the excalibur arc. As for the hate this show gets, since people are jealous beings and all want the best for themselves, when they see something getting overly popular, they tend to bias towards the thing as the thing they love doesn't get as much attention... Especially in something as simple as a 'shounen' anime.

The fan art you chosed is quite on point, I didn't reflect on that.

It might well be an attempt to cater the female audience? After all, to be an extremely popular show, it's better if both female and male audience can relate. I already thought that some heroines in this show are good enough for girls and women to relate, but if the MC ends up androgynous, which is indeed the case with the character design, that could work.

And since it's a fictional world, you don't need to show big muscles to be strong.

As for my personal opinions on the 3 distinct character designs : Kirito looked small and weak right from the start even though he was strong and I didn't care much about this kind of look's differences.

The funniest thing about the hate-train : many (IMO) awful shit shounen are rated pretty high on MAL, also by users who paradoxically down rated SAO. That's laughable.

@MortalMelancholy, have you ever played a female character in a game? I did it a lot. And my sexuality still works alright (unlike all those terminally shy people who complain they can't watch an anime because there was a pantyshot in it).

Personally, I dislike the Fairy Dance arc because Asuna became a damsel in distress and all that NTR. I prefer Asuna as the idealized girl of the first part - strong and capable. Fortunately, Mother's Rosario arc and some parts of Alicization I've read restored her cred.

In my experience (as someone who has watched SAO after I've been watching anime for a long while), it works fine for experienced viewers like me. Its quality is a step above most anime, if you ask me. Maybe it just has a low rewatch value?

It is called Shit Art Online for a reason. For a average show, it seems like some people haven't even seen a decent anime than the usual Naruto, bleach, yu-gi-oh

I have no problem with his character looking like a girl all cute. I've played male characters online and I know some of my male friends ALWAYS play girl characters, it's a game he never acted gay IRL.

I didn't like the second half because it was like they're trying to0 hard to keep it going. And I hate the little sister going all "ONIICHAAN LOVE ME NOTICE ME SENPAI" I hate that brother crush, that was annoying overall.
I didn't like the second season because, again it felt like they're trying too hard. Except the last episodes, it wasn't that enjoyable.

But I overall enjoyed it. It had action, fantasy, romance, drama some violence. I gave the overall series a 7 because it's not a bad anime. It's well drawn, has a OK story with good characters with good action scenes. So what the story is dull, it's a solid anime to watch to spend time.

Why would't I enjoy it? I don't think it deserves the hate it gets.

The weird shit in those pics appears in a lot of anime series. This is something that as an anime lover you have to compromise by accepting it as the typical Japanese weirdness.

But other than that, SAO was good. It was one of the first anime series I've ever watched and because of that it will always have that special place amongst the series I love despite its flaws...just like how those who grew up watching pokemon or digimon love it even at the age of 25 despite how childish it is.

No, I did not ever crossdress. I would not mind doing it, but I would not be convincing, I guess.
Tentacle play is fantasy, nobody has ever done it. Unless you count those flash games, but that's not much different from watching hentai.
Why do you ask? And why do you call them "homosexual acts"?

At first I really liked it because the premise was new to me. But by the second half, the elf arc, it was pretty meh; the incest angle and the way the final confrontation played out where an awful, cheap thing to watch. The second season I was excited for, I won't lie, I was hoping for something good, but it didn't turn out that way. Never liked the set up, and the having Kirito turn into a Jedi chick was too ridiculous to watch. The Excalibur arc was incredibly boring, too. HOWEVER. The Mother's Rosary arc was great. I loved it. Asuna wasn't awful and Kirito getting taken out of the picture for the most part was great. This is the only good arc of SAO imo, the rest is pretty bad, generic, basic story telling.

I couldn't agree more. My interest faded in it pretty quickly after I began to watch more anime. It isn't horrific, but it is a show that squanders a promising concept.

I have just begang with season 2 and so fare watching it was a rollercoaster a for me :)

The first few episodes I really enjoyed with good action romance and interesting story- caged in a virtual reality game...very cool
But then Kirito and Asuna stopped to fight and moved together...I was thinking what is going on?? I enjoy romance a lot but I had no idea where this story would go to...not what I espected.
And then game SAO was finished so early and Heathcliff beaten so unspectacularly. Then the incest thing..I was thinking about dropping it.
But then AOL arc was again intersting with more action and the final of season one was very cool. Now I really like the anime and looking forward to GGO arc

Many mixed emothions but now I am into it. Kirito and Asuna are such a cute couple :)

Lol yeah, that's the biggest problem with the anime adaptation, at the very least. It's ridiculously bipolar, going from action/romance, to harem, to slice of life, to elves, NTR, incest, desu ex machina, gender bender, etc.; and the poor writing itself doesn't help either.
Be thankful for the wisdom granted to you.

GGO I enjoyed a lot and also excalibur. Good action and I like Kiritos sword skills. Mother's rosario was good but way too sad for the end of the series.

I am disappointed that kirito and asuna did not get married at the end :(
Is the Manga also ending like that?

Mother's Rosario ending is just like in the original light novels.
But they do not end there, they are still ongoing. The next arc was "Alicization", and it had no end in sight when light novels got licensed and I stopped being able to check its status easily.
