I entered Oyasumi Punpun with high expectations, after hearing that this would be the manga that will break you. But as I finished the manga, there were only two moments that, eventhough didnt make me feel sad, got a "DAMN." out of me. All in all, I did not think that it was a extremely sad or depressing manga.
It was an well written history, good ending, with great characters and amazing drawings. But it didnt have the effect one me that I expected or was described.

*SPOILER* the moments that i wnet DAMN were when it was revealed that it was his mom all along the one writing the letters, and when they kill Aiko's mom *SPOILER*

Saddest thing was Aiko's death tbh. There are plenty of other shorter manga that hit harder than punpun tbh.

Same here. I've never been one to get sad at a piece of media, rather I felt very sympathetic to Punpun's plight. Feels bad more than feels sad if that makes any sense

For me it was a lingering sense of melancholy that was satisfying as a story

It had its moments, and I think I had a similar reaction as you.

"I'll never KMS no matter what hardship I may encounter in life" is what I was always telling myself before. Then that changed when I got to Aiko's part.

For me it was more like "I kinda wanna die" that went immediatly to "Ok now I'm gonna do it"

In the end I didn't do it since I'm still here but I swear it was the closest moment of my life where I think I was the closest to death, since that day those thoughts have been kinda concealed but when they come back, they hit really hard

It was more a feeling of emptiness than sadness.

Glad that you didn't do it. I hope that one day you'll never think of those thoughts again.
As for me, I feel like I'll never be able to think "I'll never KMS no matter what hardship I may encounter in life" again as long as I can remember this manga.

Punpun really hits when you yourself have dealt with feelings of self hatred, excessive guilt, not being able to achieve your dreams etc. When you have nothing to relate in the series, it just becomes another piece of media.
People who call Punpun a masterpiece have dealt with at least one problems punpun deals with throughout the manga. They call it a masterpiece because of how painfully accurate it is in depicting what they went through/are going through. Therefore it is always recommended to read when you are in a good state of mind, because it will fuck you up.

I actually avoided this manga for a long time because I thought I was gonna depressed and gonna cry rivers etc. the thing is, yes, it really evokes strong emotions, but it didnt affected me as stuff like Homunculus or Ashita no joe did.

Still, one of the best slice of life out there, even if Punpun´s adulthood felt sometimes like a bit of bad sh*t happening for the sake of happening, his childhood and teen years were the best in my book, specially since his uncle and mother were involved.

Despite a dark implication, the ending was relatively happy, so I didn't leave the series with a sad mood.

I mean, given all that happens in it, I believe it's a pretty hopeful story, so I didn't got sad or depressed at all, I finished it with a rather hopeful feeling, hehe.
