I love 5cm including the ending, but i know a lot of people have issues with it. I once read a review where the, obviously very upset, author claimed that endings like that produced people like Hitler which i found just a tad bit...uhh...exaggerated but nonetheless amusing.:P.

Produced people like Hitler? Thats a bit... extreme. heh. I guess I see that kind of ending too much. I really am a bit of a moonbeams and rainbows kind of girl when it comes to my entertainment choices. I want the happy ending where they all live happily ever after. I am watching to get away from reality not wallow in it. Though that doesnt mean I dont like something gritty and realistic either, but as I said I think these sorts of endings are way overused nowadays. Particularly in anime. I think it must be some kind of culture thing with Japan. Either that or people who make anime and manga are really miserable.

No idea if it's overused, romance isn't really my favourite type of genre. But well, i am more of a 'realistic ending' type of person anyhow. Happy endings are fine as long as they make sense, forced happy endings make my blood sugar rise to unhealthy levels...

I just finished Fantastic Children, and it was... well, fantastic. Excellent story with some great twists at the end and it oozed the old school Nippon Animation style. It's sad that this series pretty much went under the radar, and that's even with a US release.

Just finished watching Castle in the Sky which is a movie as opposed to a series and it is beautiful. One of those movies that keeps you enthralled just by watching its backgrounds. The flying machines and cities are spectacular and the story is very enjoyable too. Characters are a lot of fun, and I was very impressed.
May the Uguu be with you.

Just watched Summer Wars. It not only got two thumbs up from me, but also a 10.

It was actually a very good story. The combination of a traditional, ancient Japanese family combined with 21st century technology and how that even through the age, many family traditions and histories are still relavent even in a modern society.

Yes, it has a bit of WarGames theme in it, but it's not the overriding subplot. There are many past movie themes in it, and it's all seamless.

I highly recommend watching it.

Ookiku Furikabutte - since I'm in a baseball mood (thanks to Cross Game), I thought I'd give this a go. Imagine my surprise to find a kind of reverse Nodame on a baseball field :P

Natsu no Arashi - great visuals, overrated story.

Air Master - average show about fighting that doesn't really go anywhere.

Yokuwakaru Gendaimahou - another average show about magic. It did however, have a nice idea about how modern magic would use computers instead of incantations.

Iblard Jikan - visually stunning, but don't expect a story. I finally got around to watching this because of.....

Hottarake no Shima ~Haruka to Mahou no Kagami~ - possibly one of the best 3D movies in anime, and easily one of the most stunning. The whole movie is easily as good as anything made by Ghibli, or any of the contenders for Miyazaki's crown.

If you're in baseball mood, watch MAJOR... it's my favorite sports anime. Well Haruna is my favorite in oofuri and Goro is cool on the field and dumb off the field so he makes me think of Haruna even though I like Goro's boyfriend better XD The games are exciting so I always marathon it (which is what I'm planning to do with the coming Season 6...) the only downside, is the annoying romantic aspect that feels forced and unneeded.. (like I'm on the edge of my seat in an exciting game and suddenly they cut to the girl mooning over the boy and wondering what he's up to now.. =__=) but I already fast forward those parts so I can pretend it's not there >_>

I'm so going to look for this now, not because of Ghibli but because the synopsis reminds me of Toy Story which is my favorite Disney hehe

Oh I bet it's better, I love Disney but their movies are so cheesy.
I just meant it makes me think of Toy Story because of the old toys and all that.. the way it was phrased in the synopsis. I already got it and shall watch it soon :)

Meanwhile I've finished another WWII movie, Glass no Usagi. I'm especially proud of myself because I watched it raw and understood most of it, maybe 70%. Still cried.. *sigh* I think all the Japanese pov war movies I've seen had someone saying Japan should've lost (surrender) earlier to spare the casualties. It's really interesting how they've become so pacifistic after that war.

Well, they went through something horrific with Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as well as the firebombings of several other cities, however they were also made to agree to only having military for self defence purposes, which is where the JSDF (Japanese Self Defence Force), got its name.

Well, finally got around to finishing Toradora and Cleopatra DC and I rather enjoyed both of them. Cleopatra was a fun little romp and I personally found it better than Toradora (not so formulaic). Be honest, everybody who has seen Toradora, did anybody really expect it to end any differently than it did by the end of the third episode? Just once I'd like them to surprise me by changing how these things end. Still, for those of you who haven't seen it, it is still a rather enjoyable trip of getting to that oh-so-predictable ending.

The outcome of the romance was obvious, but all the stuff in between was amazingly well done. They managed to include a lot more subtle characterization than most anime series ever dream of.

I have to disagree Jeleinen. I found Toradora to be as formulaic as they come, and the fact that everything just had to get overly dramatic really pissed me off no end. Part of it may be the fact that I didn't really want to see another Louise/Shana tsundere loli clone who everyone suddenly starts raving about because "they're such a deep and complex character" [/sarcasm].

Heaven forbid that they ever produce a show where the couple gets together and we see how their relationship develops without the addition of any dramatic situations brought on by external factors that influence the couple in adverse ways and force them to overcome various obstacles in order to prove their love.

Oh wait. Kare Kano was a lot like that.

I just finished Railgun. It was basically three parts. The first quarter were some character introduction, second quarter came out of the manga (just reshuffled the order) and the last half was all original/filler. It wasn't a horrible series. The only time I liked it was whenever Toma made an appearance.

here here... LOVED Kare Kano, and while there certainly were some hidden issues that at times caused one or the other to question where things stood... it was otherwise pretty much "obstacle-free" and a beautifully told story :-)

Kare Kano was great, great enough to force me to look up the manga to continue the story until the end. Note that at the time I wasn't really into mangas.

As for characters like Louise and Shana, well, Shana is fun but in no way deep. But consider the main target audience of these shows, the average japanese NEET otaku.

Couldn't agree more. It was predictable from the start but at least the first half was still entertaining because of the comedy. I gave up on the series when it turned completely melodramatic.

Finished "El Cazador de la Bruja" over the weekend. Noir being the first of those similar style anime produced by BeeTrain is still the best, but also somehow the hardest to watch. El Cazador is the opposite, it's the lightest one with MadLax somewhere in the middle. The one thing I really liked was the OP song by Savage Genius, and the ED was not that bad either. Plotwise, it's not something too dramatic compared to the other two. Definately the less dark one of the three series.

^ Likewise the same here wrt Sora no Woto. This is what I had to say about it elsewhere...
I'm a bit torn over the last episode. All in all, I rated the series 8/10. For me the last episode was dramatic...but predictable. Yes, the writers pulled the right strings to pull a few tears from my eyes as the episode progressed. I don't hold that against them. But part of me wishes they had let the situation get a bit messier. I suppose the danger there is that the ending would've been really far-fetched but that would've been a real accomplishment if they had pulled it off well.

On the other hand I didn't "watch" Ikkitosen so much as I played it, listened to it and glanced at the screen from time to time. I think the line near the end of the last episode about Ukito(sic) and Hakufu being idiots pretty well sums up the series. It's a lightweight series with the bare minimum amount of intrigue to get me through to the end of it.

Finished those too, Sora no Woto was just an average romantic story, ever optimistic in its views, nothing memorable but enjoyable to watch. Railgun has the usual fails of JC Staff, too much fillers and slice of life and only small amounts of condensed action packed in few episodes.

Kimi ni and Kobato are favorites of mine, coming to end though :( .Next season will soon be upon us.

I grew up reading comics and playing pen and paper RPGs. I don't need tons of actions. It was the slice of life stuff in Railgun that appealed to me. I don't care if its filler.

I recently finished Hitohira. A very good high school drama. I'm writing a blog entry about it now so I'm all tapped out of fresh words to say about it, but it's worth tracking down if you like that sort of thing.

Also wrapped up Hataraki Man last night. Possibly the only series I've seen so set in an exclusively "adult" world. An interesting look into the world of publishing. I once had my foot in the door years ago but never at quite such a big, high-profile magazine such as JIDAI.

I rarely finish up two series at the same time like this.

My biggest problem with it was the amount(huge) of trivia on the blackboards and in the background that while seemed not to be needed actually needed to be part of the series if for no other reason it set the scene. Took me forever to get through it as I constantly had to stop, rewind, and step through a scene to get it all. It would probably have been less frustrating to learn how to read Japanese. The only series I've had longer from NetFlix has been the Rayearth series and that's because I have been sidetrack with other things and didn't get around to watching it.

Bunch of series finished for me this past week or so: Nodame Cantabile Finale, Hanamaru Youchien, Ikkitousen, and Kimi ni Todoke. Oh, and Gintama. Although that's just on hiatus. Yeah, yeah, hiatus. ;-)

Ikkitousen - Could you possibly cram more fan service into each episode?
Hanamaru Youchien - Kinda cute, but eh...
Nodame Cantabile Finale - Wasn't that into this series like it's predecessors until the last 3 or so episodes.
Kimi ni Todoke - I remain conflicted. It's a bit too peaches & cream I think. Complete fantasy. I think I enjoyed watching Ryuu and Chii more than Kazehaya & Sadako. =p
