Not that the MAL slider matters much. BBCode allows you to make an extended fav list in your "About Me" section regardless.

Shizuna said: I wonder, what is your opinion on Kikyou, Sango and Rin? I like and appreciate them all in different ways to different extents. There are very few characters in Inuyasha I outright dislike. I don't really care for Koga and that's about it. Everyone else I basically like to some degree or another, including all the main characters, side/supporting and minor characters, and villains/antagonists. Even if I don't always agree with their actions or want the main gang to crush them and thwart their plans (Naraku, Kagura, Goshinki, Kanna, etc.) or find them annoying at times (Shippo), I still appreciate their role in the story and something of what they bring to the table. (Obviously, spoilers for Inuyasha follow) Regarding those three specifically, Sango as a girl/woman and a character at first glance and in a superficial sense isn't really my type as I'm not much into those badass action hero tough fighter girl types. As well, I found her first introductory episode or few episodes and her actions and behavior in them really irksome, as I usually find that "We have to fight this person, probably temporarily, ideally without even killing them and just immobilizing or otherwise putting them down as an obstacle, because they are ignorant of the larger situation going on and what is actually at play and being manipulated by a larger, more intelligent and crafty, powerful villainous force behind them" rather infuriating. Probably because it's a recurring feature and theme (not of Inuyasha; of broader media) and one I find off-puttingly reminiscent of dynamics in real life where there are a great many examples of people and whole factions/organizations/governments/etc. serving as someone else's useful idiot and unknowingly/uncaringly making things more difficult and the world a worse place. I found Shippo's and Miroku's introductions also a tad bothersome at first, but that's just my dislike of the way new characters are introduced in the series (and some other adventure series which grow their main group one by one) and the situation concerning them was different from Sango's. But despite all that I appreciate how quickly after that first episode or two Sango became an integrated member of the found family and a loyal, useful, and resourceful one. All without dissolving her individual identity and pre-existing baggage and situation which she brought to the group. That was most on display early on when, before she knew better the extent of the capability of Naraku's level of deception and despite how close she had already started to grow to the group, she was still willing to defect if it meant the potential of freeing Kohaku and saving his life. That to me doesn't contradict loyalty as her highest loyalty was always to her younger brother, which is her sole surviving immediate family. It makes sense for many people's strongest loyalty to be to their immediate family members (parents, siblings, children, spouse) unless they are estranged and have reason for a poor relationship with them. Within the group, her relationship with Miroku despite his promiscuous playboy nature and overlooking and seeing the more endearing aspects of him and her close friendships with Kagome as almost like adoptive sisters (particularly since neither of them have biological sisters of their own and only younger brothers) and even Inuyasha despite his rude and rough nature in his way of speaking in general and harshness toward her early on (not to mention his more fierce and wild transformed youkai form which would send most normal humans running), won me over for her. She is someone with a tough and hardened exterior as well as fighting prowess, but fortunately unlike some similar characters, not one-dimensional and one-note like that and a very tender person underneath as a sister, friend, and in general. Her declaration to Miroku of wanting to stay by Inuyasha's side after he slaughtered all the fleeing bandits in the moth youkai two-parter episode, even if he loses control to his youkai blood and becomes like a feral beast incapable of reason or being talked down by Kagome, how she still didn't wish to abandon him no matter what comes to pass since he and the group didn't abandon her when she essentially betrayed them all and caused a whole mess and heap of trouble by trying to deliver the Tessaiga to Naraku for Kohaku's sake. That made me view her as both a more complicated person than initially let on and worthy member of the group until the end, come hell or high water. Also, one of the Sango-centric episodes - Kohaku, Sango, and Kirara: The Secret Flower Garden, is up there among my favorite episodes of the series, at least outside of the Kagome-Inuyasha romance-centric ones. Rin is the ideal - a perfect traveling companion, and later when she got slightly older, perfect waifu for Sesshomaru. Most other humans and youkai alike, whether we are speaking in hypothetical terms of real world people and what they're like or all of the characters of the entire series we were shown down to the most minor - most would not have faced such a powerful and fearsome wandering youkai who appeared more like a demigod with such an open mind and heart and giving without expecting anything in return. I don't believe for even a second, as some might argue, that such can be chalked up to childish innocence as even most young children are often still way more leery of strangers (as they probably arguably should be in many circumstances) as well as way more prejudiced, selfish, and transactional. Kagome herself, who herself is very giving, tolerant, and has endless patience for Inuyasha in the long-term sense, I cannot believe would be the same. Nor would Sesshomaru have put up with early Kagome. He would have killed her or at least knocked her out and left her for dead and taken what he wanted, as he would from most humans. So I see their meeting as extraordinarily lucky or fated for both to be in the exact right place and time. It saved her from death from malnourishment or disease or being brutalized or torn apart by wild animals, youkai, or bandits. And it provided him an invaluable perspective on and window into a side of the world he would otherwise have lacked for centuries or maybe until the end of his days. The profound change she had on him shown gradually throughout but especially by the last season where he would spend time and energy saving his half-brother's friends and girlfriend when previously he viewed humans as insects fit to be stomped on speaks for itself. I can think of few finer representatives of what humanity has to offer than Rin. And Kikyo, she is undoubtedly the most complicated of all of them and I feel as if I don't know where to begin with her. A volume of books could be authored on her and everything to do with her character. Let's just say that I never disliked or hated her as some do either for her vindictive and vengeful persona and actions early on (even though it could be seen that her unwittingly serving as an obstacle to Inuyasha due to Naraku's trickery, as the same scenario I complained about regarding Sango, but the situation to me was wholly different as there virtually isn't a person alive who wouldn't be fooled by the scenario of one person or entity appearing as another in front of their very eyes with the identical looks, build, and voice, if they didn't know beforehand that there was anyone or anything in the vicinity capable of some form of shapeshifting magic), nor for her "getting in the way" of the budding and evolving InuKag relationship as she was there first after all and what's more, from a certain perspective, she is inextricably linked to Kagome as a past incarnation (with both still being their own individual people). I love her aesthetic, her voice and voice acting, her recurring theme music in the OST, and her slow meandering journey of gaining better insight and understanding as to precisely what occurred 50 years prior to the main events of the series and how exactly she ended up in the circumstances and predicament she's currently in. The episode "Kikyo's Lonely Journey", is also one of my top favorite episodes and her interaction with Naraku's/Onigumo's former bandit comrade Rasetsu, in a way the one who was the igniting spark starting this whole conflict the series revolves around, now as a dying old man, one of my favorite scenes. But she was also a product of her time raised and groomed with a certain mentality to fulfill a certain highly specific duty as a priestess and guardian of the shikon no tama. In the end, despite all her positive intentions and good will and feelings toward Inuyasha, etc., she herself couldn't overcome the limitations of her upbringing and was coming from too flawed and limited a perspective which is partially how she ended up with a disastrous outcome. She was boxed in by traditions a certain way of thinking. And what I mean and am referring to by that - if you've seen the whole series - is that she too was incapable of seeing and making the one correct wish and so was inherently damned to unknowingly perpetuate a cycle of greed and arrogance. She longed and intended to wish for something hubristic, short-sighted, and in a way selfish, however beneficial and altruistic she herself considered it, and in so doing walked into hell and misery. Because the jewel is just like any legendary cursed object in stories like this - like the cursed monkey's paw, evil genie/djinn's lamp, the One Ring, etc. in that it will never not nefariously twist and use to corrupt the recipient any wish and aspiration other than the correct one. It took 500 years of a soul being refined for a successor to see the light and reach for the tiniest narrowest path out of that ceaseless maze. Kikyo, for all of her noble qualities and battling like a lion, like Midoriko before her, wasn't capable of that organic insight and could only otherwise fight forever in a loop until her body crumbled to dust. Most people wouldn't be capable either. It took an outside intervention and fresh perspective via Kagome to do so. Mostly I see her as a beautiful iron-willed person swept up by the tides over her head, pity her longstanding suffering, and take solace in that she could finally be at peace in the end knowing her will and what she wanted to achieve would probably be carried on and realized by others and not just any others, but those closest to her - her love of her life and her future self in a way. Well, even though I said all that I'm still simplifying and leaving a lot of it out. But is that basically in line with what you expected my view to be of them or did you believe I would moreso have an antipathy or indifference to them, Shizuna? It's hard for me to be indifferent to any aspect of Inuyasha (the series) and it's hard for me to hate anyone whose full range of perspectives we've seen. But those three and Miroku are definitely firmly on the more positive side of my overall assessment of all characters, probably just below Kagome and Inuyasha themselves. |

@WatchTillTandava Well, my question was mostly based on the curiosity of someone who ended up completing the series with a neutral level of affection towards the protagonists but a lot of fondness for other characters, namely Sesshoumaru, Kikyou and Rin. So, considering that “top 3 absolute favorite characters” is an extremely high accolade, I wanted to know what an admirer of Kagome thinks of other female characters from the same series. That is to say, I didn’t have any specific expectations. Thank you for satisfying my curiosity and explaining your thoughts on the matter in such detail, it helped me partially relive my own experience with Inuyasha. |

That is to say, I didn’t have any specific expectations. Thank you for satisfying my curiosity and explaining your thoughts on the matter in such detail, it helped me partially relive my own experience with Inuyasha. You're quite welcome - And to be honest, I had no idea that you were watching or had watched Inuyasha. Was this recently? Or a long time ago earlier or before your time on MAL, before we ever first met and interacted, maybe before I even watched it myself? Or like a "Just finished last week" type of deal? I need context! Maybe we've actually discussed this or you told me in prior exchanges many months or years ago but I'm misremembering or overlooking some past conversation. Regardless, if you've completed it, I welcome your sharing of any thoughts you may have on any aspect of it at any point and naturally you're always invited as well to query me regarding any aspect as you just did above. And yeah, because I didn't watch it for the first time anywhere near when it aired or became popularized overseas, but not until 2016, I wasn't ground-up present for all those original fan conversations but I've gone back and read virtually every review and every individual episode discussion on MAL and similar content elsewhere on other sites so believe I have a firm enough grasp of popular impressions and sentiments toward it, and a lot of people's relative ambivalence toward Kagome or Inuyasha individually as characters or the InuKag relationship and pairing is, perhaps a minority view but still a constantly and consistently recurring theme and many of those same people are "instead" devout Sesshomaru or Kikyo or Sango fans or all of the above or some other combination. So it's a mentality and thought process I always find interesting, how those things are linked. Then people have...what I could only say are complaints toward or issues with the series which I find a lot more silly and trivial or unsympathetic/unrelatable, like over the slapstick violence used for comedic effect or Miroku's womanizing or the age gap between Inuyasha and Kagome or Sesshomaru and Rin (which, in that case, it really should only be directed toward the sequel series Hanyou no Yashahime: Sengoku Otogizoushi as there was no, at least no overt, romance on that front in Inuyasha itself), and on and on etc. etc. etc. I find all that very alien to my experience and the way I view things, but still enjoy hearing as many perspectives as possible out of curiosity. Sometimes even hearing what some folks disliked of the series even helps remind and reaffirm why I love it so much and it's not uncommon for what I love to overlap with others' gripes. |

@WatchTillTandava I've checked our watching dates and as it turns out we've experienced Inuyasha very closely to each other - Autumn 2019 for me and Summer 2019 for you, but I can't recall us ever talking about it. There's nothing particularly interesting I can share about it, however, other than maybe the fact that Sesshoumaru comfortably sits in the list of my favorite male anime characters. So it only makes sense that I nominated him for the ongoing tournament hosted by Minkalex. It may be a bit superficial, but his main appeal to me is in how dignified he is throughout the whole series whether he appears as an enemy or as an ally to the protagonists - truly a singular character who can stand on his own while also performing just as good together with others, his tender bond with Rin completing his noble image. Miroku's womanizing reminded me of how Saeba Ryou typically acts so I obviously had no issue with it. The age gap didn't bother me either, if I see a happy couple I won't force myself to make up arguments as to why it's "actually" bad and they shouldn't be together. |

Yes, and I enjoy Sesshomaru's character design and voice acting/voice actor as well. On the seiyuu's performance, probably my fourth favorite of the series on that aspect only after Kagome and Inuyasha themselves and Naraku (Satsuki Yukino is the goddess and patron saint of seiyuu to me). Also, one detail - I actually watched it a few years earlier than that (it was my fourth ever anime series and I began watching anime in September of 2016 - I watched Inuyasha from October to December of 2016). It only shows as later on my MAL because I didn't join MAL until mid-2019, so that's when I added all the series and films which I had watched prior. |
