How many in here came blind with zero context and not knowing there were queer undertones, but either still ended up sticking through the series or enjoyed it?

A lot of the distaste in TSHD obviously comes from anime fans who were "baited" and only realized later on that the mc-s were gay or implied to be gay (and yes for those still curious this show is very gay, BL tag or not). It's one thing to have your expectations subverted from the cover/synopsis--or the lack thereof--and it's another to leave the show feeling disgusted cuz you actively avoid gay shit like the plague.

But let's highlight a different kind of narrative: how many here are non-typical consumers of queer/queeer-implied media and are still in the ride so far?

be careful, you might end up getting infected with the gay if you keep watching!!! /s

i dont actively seek out bl, or romance in general tbh. but i do enjoy a well done romance subplot. especially in this case because its a really interesting concept.
we need more queer representation in non-romance media in general

That would be me. I don't dislike the romance in this show as I feel its at least decently written.

If someone avoids the show or stops watching because there's a gay undertone, they need to grow up. Sounds like a little boy avoiding cooties. There is more to the show than that.

I mean I see the implications, but I didn’t really let that thought get to me too much. If anything I was more focused on the story and such rather than those things; to me, I just see it as them both being really tight with one another as they have been friends since they were children too. People who dislike the show regardless of the themes and undertones really just need to chill out and not let things like that get to them

I didn't know about these BL undertones when getting into this show. I don't mind 'em though as the show itself is kinda good. Somewhat complicated, I suppose, but nothing that can't be understood ig. I didn't even see 'em as BL-related until I saw people talk about it xD

It also helps that I don't mind BL stories/themes at all of course lol, but I don't see why these levels of undertones should be a problem to people πŸ€” there's stuff out there that's much "worse" than what's being portrayed in here. People could technically - maybe - even view these undertones as non-BL if they try it and think of it as something different. Like, just an insecure entity that's trying to fit in and maintain relationships with the people they've started to care about - trying to figure out if those emotions are theirs or the person they've inhabited (Hikaru). And the other (Yoshiki) trying to figure out how to deal with this entity in his life, that's "taken over" his friend. Which I don't think is even false to begin with :p

Straight male. No I didn’t know but I don’t mind either. In fact it the main reason I stuck with it. I like complicated feelings in anime. Usually when it’s yaoi or yuri that’s enough but lately that’s become something I’ve seen too many times to feel like it’s complicated anymore. But your old crush who’s dead body is hanging around who doesn’t understand right or wrong anymore on top of having lovecraftian horror powers and tells you he loves you? How are you supposed to feel about that? I’m dying to see what answers Yoshiki comes to

Knew some vague details about the manga from when i worked in a comic shop and got curious about it then, but when i tried the anime i didn't like how the horror and psychological elements were executed which were the parts i was most looking foward too

I wouldn't say i'm a typical consumer of queer-media, i don't particularly care abut the characters sexuality or identity, if i find the story interesting i'll stck with it, if not i won't

I’ll be honest I don’t support it but I still watched it because I thought it would be more horror. Honestly I’m a tad bit disappointed because I would rather call this a drama than horror because it’s more based around their relationship and how Yoshiki feels about the new “Hikaru.” I will admit I have been enjoying the show. It’s interesting but slow and honestly I don’t mind the bl because they actually make it into a good story unlike most shows I’ve seen where I’m from where they just throw it in your face.

I came into this expecting a mystery-horror series, but it turns out the characters feel extremely forced, with little to no focus on actual horror. I’ve only seen the first three episodes, so hopefully it gets better, but at this point I’m honestly struggling to find the motivation to continue. Maybe it improves later on, but right now it feels like a wasted premise that doesn’t live up to its potential.

@nishant0 Interesting, it might not be full on slasher horror, but the atmosphere is pretty creepy/unsettling to me.

Anime fans are so weird. You guys goon to little girl characters but shit your pants at even the concept of gay people existing?

Probably the worst “community” out there. Glad I don’t interact with anime fans.

Exactly. They act like they’ve been smacked in the face with the horrific existence of gay people every week. When it’s het it’s good, when it’s queer it’s bait.

@LostSpectre that was true for only first episodes, next two episodes was disappointing the focus shifted toward romanticizing the MC’s relationship with Hikaru’s replacement, which felt unnecessary and completely out of place for the kind of story this was supposed to be. And he isn't even a human so Idk how I felt about that.

That's kinda the point though? xD A human building a close, intimate bond with a creature beyond human comprehension is at the core of this story. Developing that relationship is crucial, even for the horror elements which also often stem from ups and downs of this relationship. Being flabbergasted at how such a dynamic can even proceed considering "Hikaru's" nature is not a symptom of bad writing, it's literally a source of conflict driving the plot forward xD

I just don't get why people act as if elements of this story are not interconnected. As if the focus on the relationship suddenly erases the creepy horror atmosphere, no it doesn't? xD
