I think all the anime that are highly praised and have a lot of fans are actually not as good as everyone says they are. So basically 99.9% of all anime masterpieces and hyped anime are overrated. Do you agree or no?

I have done that and not gotten bored. To answer your title question though, the answer is absolutely yes if the series came out in 2020 or later. Earlier stuff, especially pre-2012ish tends to be underrated because covid kiddies look up highly acclaimed anime and then hate it because it doesn't fit their sensibilities.

Not all, but a lot of them are. I've rewatched most of my favorites at least once, I don't really ever get bored on a rewatch because I generally consider a series very carefully before I do a rewatch anyway.

no, of course not.

I dare you to rewatch a favorite anime of yours which is highly rated and praised and has a lot of fans and not get bored.

done so a few times. what's your point? that something that isn't as interesting on a rewatch is automatically overrated?

Okay. Let me rewatch Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu. Hmm... Nope, its rating is quite appropriate.

The most popular anime are the ones which were the most accessible historically. Sometimes the anime also happen to be good, whereas often they were just what was most available.

Do you agree or no?

Yes, but this is only true for some anime. When I first heard about Roshidere I expected it be cute because of that Russian teasing, but in the end what I got was a plain rom-com that is carried by Yuki - it didn't help much either when the narrative was too confusing at times. This and Shikimori-san are the most overrated romcoms for me personally.

A rating of 7.57 is underwhelming for a show with top-tier visuals that gained massive hype pre-airing, but as a romance fan, I value emotional storytelling more than spectacles.

Idk man I think "overrated" and "underrated" are more or less subjective terms based on the tastes of whoever is using them. I do agree in the sense of finding a lot of popular and highly rated anime pretty meh, though.

I agree with confidence, I believe this applies to 70% of the "popular" Anime titles
I see it as riding the Hype band wagon, like take SAO.
It became a top series of it's time and gained massive popularity from only "those who watch it."
The fans claim every single season is peak, but from my personal experience as a casual watcher, that is untrue

No, that is a pretty silly take. The only reason you are able to think they are overrated is because they have been copied by other anime to the point where the original seems unoriginal. These were anime that defined their time, and if you didn't live in, or can not understand that time, you don't have a horse in the race, so head on home.

Personally, yeah I think most of them are.

However there is a reason these anime became popular/acclaimed/beloved in the first place and let's face it take your pick from the popular ones, even if it's not your thing you can at least notice something that it does right or better than others in it's category.

There's also the expectation that going into something popular would automatically make it good (for you) or you'd at least have higher expectations than something niche.

Time to check back in on MAL's top anime list.

1. Frieren
Haven't seen, no comment.

2. FMAB
Is actually excellent and worth being in the top 10. It is one of the usual recommendations to normies who have never seen anime for a reason. It is a tight 64 episode long story with a beginning, a middle, and an end. It gets to the ending in a timely manner and has no filler, and does not jump the shark. All of the characters are likeable. Good production values.

3. Steins;Gate
Overrated, overall a little boring and the plot is not very memorable, but not bad. Not worthy of being in the top 10.

4. Attack on Titan Season 3 part 2.
The production values of the first season were okay, and then became so abysmal with the second season that I transistioned to reading the manga. From what glimpses I have seen of the sequel seasons, they continue to look mediocre. As such, the AoT animes are unworthy to be in the top 10 list.

5. Gintama: The Final
Unworthy. I watched the first 50 episodes of the first Gintama show waiting for it to "get good" as the fans said it would, only for that to never happen. It is an endless amount of fluff episodes with lackluster production values and no staying power. These sequel seasons being so highly rated is an obvious flaw of MAL's ranking system. Notice how millions of people have seen the 4 higher ranked shows, but only 170k here. The 170k of diehard Gintama fans who have made it this far.

6. Gintama
Unworthy. Addressed above. Also note it only has 670k members, again indicative of how MAL's ranking system is easily gamed by diehard audiences.

7. HxH 2011
Overall good show but unworthy. It is absurdly long, but only the Hunter Exam arc at the beginning and the third arc in York New City were engaging. The Chimera Ant arc is awful. Okay production values.

8. One Piece Fan Letter
I do not know what this is. No comment.

9. Legend of the Galactic Heroes OVA series
Grossly overrated but still very good. Great aesthetics, good production values. The show however is drawn out and could have been told in half the runtime. Too many speeches of standing around talking about high school level philosophy, and lots of strawmanning. The interesting campaign strategies are frontloaded early on. Good but not worthy of a top 10.

10. Gintama
See above.

(Skimming through the 11 to 50 list)

A lot of this seems to be niche stuff. Under a million members.

Clannad After Story is overall good but grossly overrated.

Koe no Katachi is grossly overrated.

Code Geass season 2 is bad.

Your Name is overrated but overall good. Shinkai's older and newer movies are more entertaining and/or memorable.

Cowboy Bebop is grossly overrated but solid, better production values than the vast majority of modern anime. Sad to see that it is about to fall out of the top 50.

Overall, the OP is correct. The vast majority of the highest rated anime on MAL are unworthy of their positions.

If I were to construct a top list (not my list of personal favorites, but of what I would consider to be the combination of the most popular anime and the objectively best anime), then it would be something like: Ghibli movies, Makoto Shinkai movies, Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, Gundam 0079, Pokemon first season, Death Note, FMAB, Fate/Zero, SAO, and... maybe Frierien or Demon Slayer (haven't seen either of them so I do not know if they are actually good, but they appear to be extremely popular so probably worth considering). Maybe also Code Geass season 1 as though I think it is not that good, it is still good enough and is also (or was) very popular.

I think most of them probably classify as "overrated" in the sense that a lot of the people who are rating them probably don't have a solid metric or personal taste to give a nuanced opinion. Most people I've seen who are "new" to anime tend to look up a list of highly rated series and they roll through those and simply end up reinforcing the existing status quo.

That said, I think those series are generally appropriately rated, because, like many people exhibit, they're high quality and enjoyable for most newcomers and old heads.

Basically, it's all relative and subjective. Go figure.
