I am curious what everyone uses for subtitle font, color, line width, drop shadows, positioning and all that when using soft coded subs? What is all the settings and post screen shots what it looks like if you can. Do any of you use dual language subtitles? I havent chosen what to use myself yet so I have no example.

Any preference for a certain sub file type? What do you do when you want to merge sub files into a video itself instead of using an external file?

I don't really tweak the text like that. I'm always happy with the default.

I have recently started using Korean subtitles more. It just feels more like a natural translation from Japanese than English subtitles.

I've been noticing more and more Korean subs on streaming, like Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime, and I really appreciate this.

Should cover as much of the screen as possible, have a super thick font and make sure it flashes constantly

I'm personally fine with the default, specifically the ones on Crunchyroll. They're a basic font with no colors and they get the job done extremely well. Very easy to read.

That's disgusting and you shouldn't do that but if you really want to then use ffmpeg.

I've said it a lot in the past, so I'm going to try and keep up the tradition of nesting the same reply further and further. The furthest nested quote is already over a year old.

This again? Ugh... fine. Time to quote the time I quoted myself, so that in the future I can quote the quote I quoted myself in.

Mentioned in a different thread, so I'll just quote it.

Example of what that looks like, vs bottom subs.

Subtitles at 1.25x size, since encoding a long clip into a 2 mb gif required a lot of fiddling with framerate and resolution, so the subs look larger than they'd normally look. BTW, this is Gallery Fake.

Otherwise, the only other thing I do is use FFmpeg to convert any SRT/VTT subs to ASS, since on MPV, SRT subs seem to go to the top/bottom of the player window, instead of the top/bottom of the video inside the player. And needless to say, my "subs on top" thing necessitates the subs being external, minus instances where the subs are PGS/VobSub/hardsub, since I still have no idea how to mess with the position data of those in a bash scriptable way.

EDIT: I'm not done trying to do my subs-on-top shenanigans with PGS/VobSubs (I know MPV's sub position shortcuts can move bottom-aligned subtitles, but I mean externally, so also alter originally top-aligned subs to be bottom-aligned, so they don't overlap), but I know it's nontrivial enough that it'd be much more of a rabbithole than ASS subs, which are just really well documented and easy to work with.

Subs not in my own language because 99,9% of the time the names are all wrong. Example: movie 09 of DBZ downloaded yesterday from Nyaa, subs in italian, the names were the wrong localized ones, I will use another sub downloaded from Nyaa but this time in english, even if the names are not all correct they're still more correct than the italian ones. I also removed the italian dub while I was there, but that's another whole story.

Soft-coded, bottom of the screen (centered), white, back stroke, some drop shadow. Essentially just default settings if you aren't Netflix (fuck Netflix subs they're basically unreadable). I basically want them to be as unassuming as possible so they aren't actively distracting
