Adorable pilot episode for a romcom. I honestly don’t understand how the anime’s title relates to the story so far, but it’s a pretty title, so I don’t really mind. That aside, I’ll never understand why it’s always so easy for guys to hit girls in romcom anime, it’s like every male character had a rough upbringing or something. That said, I’m really glad Rintaro stepped in and saved Kaoruko from those creeps in time. It would’ve gotten really bad otherwise. I kind of wanted him to land a punch or two, but I guess his death stare was enough, apparently it’s terrifying, haha.

Also, I love how Kaoruko only visited Rintaro’s store once, and by the very next day, he’s already daydreaming about when she’ll come again, haha. Nevertheless, I have some questions about this anime having such a high rating, 8.9/10 is huge, and I’m not entirely convinced it’s justified yet.

I know this show’s been super hyped for a while now, but let’s be honest, truly great romance anime are rare. I liked the prologue, but it didn’t blow me away. It was just decent. So now I’m waiting to be surprised. I really hope it lives up to the hype, because I love a good romance anime, and like I said, genuine masterpieces in this genre are few and far between. Can’t wait to see what the upcoming episodes have in store!

At the very least the title in Japanese relates to the characters names, but maybe there is a deeper meaning as well. The kanji character for fragrant (Kaoru) is used in the female lead’s name (Kaoruko), and the kanji character for dignity (Rin) is a part of the male lead’s name (Rintaro). The Saku part is Japanese for bloom and this is also the name of yet another major character.

As a huge fan coming from the manga I also don’t think the rating is appropriate (even considering how the rating in the 1st week doesn’t matter). I think it is because most people are forced to pirate it, and usually only existing fans care enough to pirate, thus you have a higher ratio of manga fans voting than you do newcomers compared to any other Anime.

Very impressive first episode. I wanted to watch it on Netflix and I have to wait September... for real? What's the point of a Simulcast that is delayed...

I like like the male main character, he seems a good guy in an horrible school, while the Kaoru is so perfect, and she cares for someone she has just met.

This could really be one of the top anime of the year, I had Clannad vibes all over the episode, animation is perfects, the story is cliched but who cares if characters are so well written!
I'm only worried that if she eats all those cakes, she won't be very healthy later in life.

I haven't seen the original source or haven't seen any spoilers but now I know why this is so hyped. Very understandable. This is so fcking good. And the main girl no doubt already won the best girl of the season.

11/10 great romance.

Not judging anyone who likes this show, just gonna say that first, but this first episode felt really superficial. We got two of those "character(s) walk away then one turns around because they still have something important to say"-moments, the girl is quite similar to many of the female self-insert characters found in primarily Shojo manga and the guy is the standard protective type with the deep-rooted social problems. I am not saying that these things can't be done well, just that they seem a bit shallow right now. That last part is important, because obviously we only got one episode so far, so this could all change, but at least right now, it just all feels really flat.
Hello, please don't take anything I say as an insult, it is not meant as an attack against you as a person. If I directly disagree with you, that does not mean I think you are wrong, I am just more correct.

@The_Best_Tastes First of all, I'm quite honored to have a manga reader answer my questions, thank you very much, truly. Secondly, I do understand what you mean by "a higher ratio of manga fans voting than newcomers". That was the case with Solo Leveling too. But in my case, I was the reader, since Solo Leveling was my first manhwa ever. So when it was confirmed for an anime, I was really unsure of how it would turn out, given that most manhwa that get adapted into anime are usually handled by up-and-coming studios that end up ruining the whole thing. The biggest example of that is the recent TBATE anime adapted by A-Cat, which was also hyped for a long time before its adaptation by a lot of its manhwa/novel readers.

But when it was announced that A-1 Pictures would be the studio working on Solo Leveling, I was so happy. The reason I'm bringing up Solo Leveling is because I immediately rated it a 10/10 before it even dropped, given how it was one of my first and favorite manhwa at the time. I imagine a lot of others like me did the same thing, especially since Solo Leveling is one of the most popular Korean comics out there. That’s probably why the first season had a whopping 8.4/10 rating before it even aired. Then it dropped to 8.3/10, I think, or something like that, I can’t really recall.

The reason I'm saying all this is because this new anime is rated even higher than Solo Leveling, which, as I said, is literally the most popular Korean comic ever. You know? That’s what has me really confused. And by confusion, I don’t mean I think it’s bad or undeserving of the rating. I just mean, is it really THAT good? So much that it’s already rated higher than Lord of the Mysteries, the most hyped Chinese novel/anime of all time?

Dang, this anime just dropped & already beat the biggest hit of Korea AND the biggest hit of China? Not that I’m complaining, it’s just a bit unbelievable to me. Although if it IS true, and it IS that good, then I’m super excited for whatever is better than both Lord of the Mysteries & Solo Leveling combined, haha.

Gave the 1st episode a chance because it was so highly rated and really enjoyed the animation and the chara design. Waguri's pointy hair was a throwback to 2010-esque chara design but with the quality of recent anime productions and I thought it was really well done. I'd actually love it if this anime could kickstart the resurgence of a mix between today's round and trendy chara design with retro spiky and angular chara design.

However, this kind of romance is not my thing. The setting is fine but Waguri's reactions and lines kind of felt too unnatural to me at times, which is weird because I was under the impression that it was very male gaze-ish but apparently the author is a woman.

@Skuvan I don't think it makes that much sense to compare between genres that are so different. Battle shounen or things close to that category generally get hyped up a lot more and but also inviet more scrutiny and hate compared to other genres like romcom, slice of life, or anything in the Seinen genre. That is why there is a trend that battle shounens tend to struggle to get a high rating in general. Lord of Mysteries is also a different can of worms because even with a good source material, the fast pacing in the first few episodes is not liked by monkey-brain watchers and the truth is some people don't like the Chinese voices which is the only one available right now.

But for this series even if it is not discussed as much I mean the manga has a score of 8.83 and on some manga sites it is even top 5 all time so it is definitely well-liked in the romance genre. I am biased so I will so it IS that good, but it is definitely not for everyone, and I agree that the rating now also doesn't make sense if people were to rate just based on the 1st episode. It will probably drop very quickly as most Animes after the 1st week, though realistically I wouldn't be surprised to see it end at above a 8.9 given the contents of this season, especially towards the second half.

I've heard a lot about manga, and only praises, but somehow I never got to reading it, so I'm starting with anime and I love it already. It's so cute and seems so wholesome, is it going to break my heart at the end like Clannad did?

It has one of my aboslute favourite tropes, scary looking guy being an absolute sweetheart. And Kaoruko is so unbeliveably cute, both in looks and behaviour. It's nice to see that she is not just a heroine with one trait, she can gets scared and still stands firm, she ran away but came back wiith some courage, she speaks softly and nice but holds her truth. I'm so so interested how things will develop. I love main pairing already.

And finally if I was in Rintaro’s shoes when I found *That* out about Waguri I would’ve been shocked and devastated as well like “WHAT?! YOUR TELLING ME THE PERSON I HELPED GOES TO THE OTHER SCHOOL THAT DESPISES MY SCHOOL?!?! This can’t be real bro…”

Love the animation, love the story, love the dynamic, love everything so far lol

I remember when I was in junior high, even though we do have girls in our school, but they are in seperate classroom, like 1 to 15 are all girls classroom and after that is all boys room, so kinda the same situation. Once in awhile we will cross path will girls and I still remember one time bunch of girls looked at me and smile (couple of them I've been classmates with when we were in primary school), anyway, that kinda made me felt good inside (or maybe they are laughing at me, who know lol)

As a manga reader I'm happy with how the adaptation looks, the character interactions are even more adorable than the manga. The plot definitely rings a little more cliche when adapted into anime form though imo. I think this first episode is gonna be a lot better when everything else comes out and the viewer can see how everything pans out.

Had to binge a ton of the new summer shows in one sitting and left this for last because I have extremely high expectations for this anime, I've never read the manga just seen a few panels and thought the art was incredibly pretty. But people have been hyping this anime up for ages so im here to see what the fuss is about.

Not only that but holy hell does the fanbase of this anime protect Kaoruko like she's a saint, someone she seems to have the most loyal and wholesome fanbase behind her I've ever seen in a anime community for a popular girl in a romance anime. I can kinda see why their like this after that episode

But to actually talk about the episode I really enjoyed it, generally there's a lot to go over other than Kaoruko just being super precious. The whole idea of two divided schools hating eachother and then the fact that Rin and Kaoruko will inevitably grow closer and fall in love it will be interesting to see how that dynamic plays into the story considering both schools hate eachother.

Amazing first episode

A decent first episode, great adaptation and I especially love the beautiful art style. They definitely did Kaoruko justice. Her facial expressions and reactions are so cute!

Although the writing itself was a lot more cliche than I'd remembered....two guys ganging up on one girl in the middle of the night, really? And were they seriously about to punch her? Wtf is wrong with them??? Also it would've been nice if Rintarou had intervened much earlier, but sure we gotta hear what Kaoruko thinks of him first.

Anyways, still looking forward to the next episode and more wholesome moments. I didn't keep track in the manga, but I'm kinda curious to see how many times the characters will say "thank you" and "I'm sorry" in this anime.

The OP and ED were cute, but totally skippable. The quality is both surprisingly good considering CloverWorks has 3 anime releasing this season, but also could be better too. Hopefully the quality maintains its current level and doesn't drop off later as is common with a lot of anime. I hope the studio doesn't overdo it as I worry for their staff...

Peak romance manga getting an adaptation released alongside sequels for 2 other popular romance series means romance fans are eating GOOD this season.

Might be an all time great seasonal anime quarter.

6/10 at best, they did pretty well playing with the characters of the MC boy, but it's overall still a bit too weak, plus the pace is moving a bit too slow for me too. I can see how the romance buds already, but that only means as the first ep there needs to be more impact, it's becoming a little too predictable by the end of the ep... hopefully they turn things up a little going forward. At least this is nowhere close to shoujo, what a relief

I'm gonna be honest, I'm not really getting the hype with this episode. I understand that the manga is a fan favorite and I'm willing to wait to see what the story offers in the future for it to be so beloved but, speaking for this episode alone, it seems like a pretty standard narrative. Not bad by any means, don't get me wrong, but just your run-of-the-mill romance anime of an unexpected pair with an average animation quality and a pretty character design. Haven't we seen this before with Ore Monogatari, for example? Idk, let's see how it advances in the next episodes, and if really brings something new to the table. But the 8.9 rating is crazy lmao There wasn't anything in this first episode to warrant this number

Netflix are legitimately the worst licensor of anime on earth dude they should never touch anything. Why the fuck would you do a batch release and delay the global release for TWO MONTHS? Daily reminder it’s not just ethical to pirate from Netflix, but an obligation. Awful password sharing rules and now this.

Anyway, as for the episode itself. Perfect adaptation of chapter 1 and so well paced! Cloverworks did this chapter justice and it’s a nice introduction to our two lovebirds as well as the core theme of Kaoruhana, “don’t judge a book by its cover” in this episode alone, we see several instances of people prejudging people based on their own preconceived notions. Whether it’s the Kyoko girls looking down on Chidori boys, Chidori boys putting Kyoko girls on a pedestal, Rintaro himself making assumptions about Kaoruko and of course the goons at the end harassing Kaoruko. You never know someone until you actually sit down and talk to them.

Our wonderfully adorable female lead Kaoruko is the poster child for this. Everyone else sees Rintaro as some delinquent to be feared, she just sees him as a kind soul working at his mom’s shop. They did such a great job of showcasing her personality and the sweetheart that Rintaro really is! A lot of the scenes were basically 1:1 and have the same cozy and wholesome vibe the manga does. It’s just the beginning, but I’m very pleased with the job they’ve done so far and can’t wait to see more.

Kaoruko’s smiles in this episode are gonna get me through the week, I love her so much.
@Marinate1016 I must also second the opinion to cancel Netflix

Why the hell this anime was so hyped up? The only thing i liked was the girl's design and nothing. The guy being a scary looking person from outside but "wonderful" from inside is not unique at all. The girl was acting so corny and cheesy, i couldn't watch the show without a disgusted face.
The thing im more angry about is how people are rating the show from the first episode like man what did you see that good in this shi*ty episode.
Hope there's something good happenin in the future eps, cause i cant watch a show like this. I had waited so much for this anime cause the hype and now im really disappointed.
Is romance genre really dead now or is it just the changes in my anime taste.
